Recently, edge computing has emerged as a prevailing paradigm in applying deep learning-based object detection models, offering a promising solution for time-sensitive tasks. However, existing edge object detection faces several challenges: 1) These methods struggle to balance detection precision and model lightweightness. 2) Existing generalized edge-deployment designs offer limited adaptability for object detection. 3) Current works lack real-world evaluation and validation. To address these challenges, we propose the Edge Detection Toolbox (ED-TOOLBOX), which leverages generalizable plug-and-play components to enable edge-site adaptation of object detection models. Specifically, we propose a lightweight Reparameterized Dynamic Convolutional Network (Rep-DConvNet) that employs a weighted multi-shape convolutional branch structure to enhance detection performance. Furthermore, ED-TOOLBOX includes a Sparse Cross-Attention (SC-A) network that adopts a localized-mapping-assisted self-attention mechanism to facilitate a well-crafted Joint Module in adaptively transferring features for further performance improvement. In real-world implementation and evaluation, we incorporate an Efficient Head into the popular You-Only-Look-Once (YOLO) approach to achieve faster edge model optimization. Moreover, we identify that helmet detection—one of the most representative edge object detection tasks—overlooks band fastening, which introduces potential safety hazards. To address this, we build a Helmet Band Detection Dataset (HBDD) and apply an edge object detection model optimized by the ED-TOOLBOX to tackle this real-world task. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of components in ED-TOOLBOX. In visual surveillance simulations, ED-TOOLBOX-assisted edge detection models outperform six state-of-the-art methods, enabling real-time and accurate detection. Inertial human motion capture (IHMC) has become a robust tool to estimate human kinematics in the wild such as industrial facilities. In contrast to optical motion capture, where occlusions might take place, the kinematics of a worker can be continuously provided. This is for instance a prerequisite for an ergonomic assessments of the workers. State-of-the-art IHMC solutions require inertial sensors to be tightly attached to body segments. This requires an additional setup time and lowers the practicability and ease of use when it comes to an industrial application. In contrast, sensors integrated into loose clothing such as a working jacket, may yield corrupted kinematics estimates due to the additional motion of loose clothing. In this work we present a study of orientations deviations obtained from kinematics estimates using tightly attached inertial sensors and into a working jacket integrated ones. We performed a quantitative analysis using data from the two hardware setups worn by 19 subjects performing different industry related tasks and measures of their body shapes. Using this data we approximated probability distributions of the deviation angles for each person and body segment. Applying different statistical measures we could gain insights to questions like, how severe orientation deviations are, if there is an influence of body shapes on the distribution and how probability distributions of the deviation angles can indicate physical motion limitations of a sensor attached to a segment.

Self-Healing Secure Blockchain Framework in Microgrids

Blockchain has recently been depicted as a secure protocol for information exchange in cyber-physical microgrids. However, it is still found vulnerable to consensus manipulation attacks. These stealth attacks are often difficult to detect as they use kernel-level access to mask their actions. In this paper, we firstly build a trusted and secured peer-to-peer network mechanism for physical DC microgrids' validation of transactions over Distributed Ledger. Secondly, we leverage from a physics-informed approach for detecting malware-infected nodes and then recovering from stealth attacks using a self-healing recovery scheme augmented into the microgrid Blockchain network. This scheme allows compromised nodes to adapt to a reconstructed trustworthy signal in a multi-hop manner using corresponding measurements from the reliable nodes in the network. Additionally, recognizing the possible threat of denial-of-service attacks and random time delays (where information sharing via communication channels is blocked), we also integrate a model-free predictive controller with the proposed system that can locally reconstruct an expected version of the attacked/delayed signals. This supplements the capabilities of Blockchain, enabling it to detect and mitigate consensus manipulation attempts, and network latencies. © 2022, CC BY.

Dealing with a growing amount of data is a crucial challenge for the future of information and communication technologies. More and more devices are expected to transfer data through the Internet, therefore new solutions have to be designed in order to guarantee low latency and efficient traffic management. In this paper, we propose a solution that combines the edge computing paradigm with a decentralized communication approach based on Peer-to-Peer (P2P). According to the proposed scheme, participants to the system are employed to relay messages of other devices, so as to reach a destination (usually a server at the edge of the network) even in absence of an Internet connection. This approach can be useful in dynamic and crowded environments, allowing the system to outsource part of the traffic management from the Cloud servers to end-devices. To evaluate our proposal, we carry out some experiments with the help of LUNES, an open source discrete events simulator specifically designed for distributed environments. In our simulations, we tested several system configurations in order to understand the impact of the algorithms involved in the data dissemination and some possible network arrangements. Rail operations are often disrupted by accidents that cause traffic to diverge from the scheduled operations, rendering it difficult to run the schedule as planned. In such a case, the operator must change the schedule to return to the original schedule. If passengers are delayed, a train operator may have a policy of economically compensating them (e.g., refunding ticket fare). Compensation amounts are usually determined by the length of the delay. As a result, it is critical to have a smart way of determining whether to accelerate trains to absorb delays, thus increasing energy usage, or to compensate passengers. This paper presents a mathematical model for determining the speed profile while taking passenger usage into account. The model determines the best sequence of operating regimes and switching points between them for a variety of different situations and train types, all while accounting for delays and passenger compensation policies. The aim is to reduce both the amount of energy consumed and the amount of compensation paid to passengers. There are constraints on traction and braking forces, train velocity, forces induced by vertical and horizontal track profile, and passenger compensation policy. The results of computational tests performed on practical problem instances of the Spanish rail operator RENFE are showed. The suggested approach is capable of producing strategies that strike an excellent balance between different managerial objectives.

Small object detection (SOD) in optical images and videos is a challenging problem that even state-of-the-art generic object detection methods fail to accurately localize and identify such objects. Typically, small objects appear in real-world due to large camera-object distance. Because small objects occupy only a small area in the input image (e.g., less than 10%), the information extracted from such a small area is not always rich enough to support decision making. Multidisciplinary strategies are being developed by researchers working at the interface of deep learning and computer vision to enhance the performance of SOD deep learning based methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of over 160 research papers published between 2017 and 2022 in order to survey this growing subject. This paper summarizes the existing literature and provide a taxonomy that illustrates the broad picture of current research. We investigate how to improve the performance of small object detection in maritime environments, where increasing performance is critical. By establishing a connection between generic and maritime SOD research, future directions have been identified. In addition, the popular datasets that have been used for SOD for generic and maritime applications are discussed, and also well-known evaluation metrics for the state-of-the-art methods on some of the datasets are provided. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

software Process Improvement (SPI) encompasses the analysis and modification of the processes within software development, aimed at improving key areas that contribute to the organizations’ goals. The task of evaluating whether the selected improvement path meets these goals is challenging. Based on the results of a systematic literature review on SPI measurement and evaluation practices, we developed a framework (SPI-MEF) that supports the planning and implementation of SPI evaluations. SPI-MEF guides the practitioner in scoping the evaluation, determining measures and performing the assessment. SPI-MEF does not assume a specific approach to process improvement and can be integrated in existing measurement programs, refocusing the assessment on evaluating the improvement initiative’s outcome. Sixteen industry and academic experts evaluated the framework’s usability and capability to support practitioners, providing additional insights that were integrated in the application guidelines of the framework. computers have been used in different areas of medical technology and applications. Innovation in the field of tehnology has been considered as a fundamental consitutent of medical discipline. Advancement in the field of medical and health care results in an ease for disease diagnostic, reduction in risk of diseases and lessen pain which is eventually beneficial to human life. In this work, the designing and effect of skin puncturing of micro-needle was studied. The simulations for skin puncturing was performed in ANSYS and MATLAB fuzzy logic tool. The skin puncturing using needle based on human skin coatings including dermis, stratum corneum and viable epidermis was studied. Fuzzy logic analysis was use to study the effect of effect of applied stress and tip diameter of the needle on the three layers of skin. A 3D model of human skin layer and needle was created in ANSYS and studied for an applied force of 0.4 to 0.9N. Thinner the tip diameter of the needle, more penetration and puncturing of skin will occur. Similarly, for applied skin, more stress is required for proper puncturing of stratum corneum layer of human skin. The microfluidic analysis performed in the CFX environment of ANSYS shows that at the driving pressure of 140 kPa, 415μL/min flow rate has been achieved. © 2020 - IOS Press and the authors. Hamiltonian simulation using product formulas is arguably the most straightforward and practical approach for algorithmic simulation of a quantum system’s dynamics on a quantum computer. Here we present corrected product formulas (CPFs), a variation of product formulas achieved by injecting auxiliary terms called correctors into standard product formulas. We establish several correctors that greatly improve the accuracy of standard product formulas for simulating Hamiltonians comprised of two partitions that can be exactly simulated, a common feature of lattice Hamiltonians, while only adding a small additive or multiplicative factor to the simulation cost. We show that correctors are particularly advantageous for perturbed systems, where one partition has a relatively small norm compared to the other, as they allow the small norm to be utilized as an additional parameter for controlling the simulation error. We demonstrate the performance of CPFs by numerical simulations for several lattice Hamiltonians. Numerical results show our theoretical error bound for CPFs matches or exceeds the empirical error of standard product formulas for these systems. We also demonstrate improvements offered by CPFs by implementation on actual quantum hardware as well as noisy and noiseless quantum simulators. CPFs could be a valuable algorithmic tool for early fault-tolerant quantum computers with limited computing resources. The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed, including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art & culture, socialization, commerce, and businesses. Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse and lack a holistic view of the entire process. Moreover, most surveys refrain from providing detailed guidance about the development process of the metaverse, including its impact on technologies, businesses, existing challenges, and potential research directions due to their lack of a macro and micro perception of such a topic. To this end, a more holistic, multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline and fill the gap in existing Metaverse surveys. To address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions, and monetization.
