Growing computational capabilities and simulation tools based on highorder methods allow the simulation of complex shaped plasma devices including the entire nonlinear dynamics of the Maxwell-Vlasov system. Such simulations model the particle-field-interactions of a non-neutral plasma without significant simplifications. Thereby, new insights into physics on a level of detail that has never been available before provide new design implications and a better understanding of the overall physics. We present a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method based Particle-In-Cell code for unstructured grids in a parallelization framework allowing for large scale applications on HPC clusters. We simulate the geometrically complex resonant cavity of the 170 GHz gyrotron aimed for plasma resonance heating of the fusion reactor ITER and we demonstrate that a highly efficient parallelization is a crucial requirement to simulate such a complex large-scale device. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

International e-Infrastructures offer a wide variety of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services that federate computing, storage, networking and other hardware in order to create an 'innovative toolset' for multidisciplinary research and engineering. UNICORE services are known to be secure, reliable, and fast providing researchers all over the world with powerful software that enables the use of those e-Infrastructures as a 'commodity tool' in daily geographically distributed activities. As key technology provider of the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI), UNICORE is available as part of the Unified Middleware Distribution (UMD) serving the needs of researchers that require mainly High Throughput Computing (HTC). On the other end of the scale, UNICORE offers specifically optimized resources within the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) today. Beyond Europe, UNICORE installations are emerging more and more such as within the Extreme Science and engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) US multi-disciplinary e-Infrastructure (aka Cyberinfrastructure) offering both HTC and HPC resources. The grand challenges in science, engineering, and in society that need to be solved towards 2020 and beyond will increasingly require both geographical and intellectual collaboration across multiple disciplines. International e-Infrastructures are considered to be one key toolset to tackle those grand challenges and this contribution will outline several options how UNICORE can remain one 'technology of choice' towards 2020. A strategic roadmap is presented that illustrates the role of UNICORE alongside the European Commission's (EC) vision for Europe in 2020, including the opportunities that arise for UNICORE in the context of the Digital Agenda for Europe. Load imbalance is an important impediment on the path towards higher degrees of parallelism - especially for engineering codes with their highly unstructured problem domains. In particular, when load conditions change dynamically, efficient mesh partitioning becomes an indispensable ingredient of scalable design. However, popular graph-based methods such as those used by ParMetis require global knowledge, which effectively limits the problem size on distributed-memory machines. On such architectures, space-filling curves (SFCs) offer a memory-efficient alternative and many sophisticated schemes have already been proposed. In this paper, we present a simple strategy based on SFCs that is custom-tailored to the needs of static meshes with dynamically changing computational load. Exploiting the properties of this class of problems, it is not only easy to implement but also reduces memory requirements substantially. Moreover, exclusively relying on MPI collective operations, our load-balancing scheme also offers portable performance across a broad range of HPC systems. Experimental evaluation shows excellent scaling behavior for up to 16,384 cores on a Nehalem-Infiniband system and up to 294,912 processes on a Blue Gene/P system.

Electrodialysis is one of the energy and cost efficient technologies for sea water desalination. In this process, sea water flows through a complex spacer structure which separates the ion exchange membranes. The lattice Boltzmann model for mixture modeling has been chosen to study the transport phenomena of ionized liquids in the spacer filled channel. This model is implemented in a highly scalable solver framework, based on an octree data structure. In this paper, the performance and scalability of our solver on the Cray XE6 Hermit system in Stuttgart are presented. The scaling analysis is performed with a single spacer element with 66 thousand elements of the periodically defined spacer geometry and scaled up to the full length of the laboratory experiment spacer with 66 million elements.

Searches for transient astrophysical sources often reveal unexpected classes of objects that are useful physical laboratories. In a recent survey for pulsars and fast transients, we have uncovered four millisecond-duration radio transients all more than 40° from the Galactic plane. The bursts’ properties indicate that they are of celestial rather than terrestrial origin. Host galaxy and intergalactic medium models suggest that they have cosmological redshifts of 0.5 to 1 and distances of up to 3 gigaparsecs. No temporally coincident x- or gamma-ray signature was identified in association with the bursts. Characterization of the source population and identification of host galaxies offers an opportunity to determine the baryonic content of the universe.

John Bell's inequalities have already been considered by Boole in 1862. Boole established a one-to-one correspondence between experimental outcomes and mathematical abstractions of his probability theory. His abstractions are two-valued functions that permit the logical operations AND, OR and NOT and are the elements of an algebra. Violation of the inequalities indicated to Boole an inconsistency of definition of the abstractions and/or the necessity to revise the algebra. It is demonstrated in this paper, that a violation of Bell's inequality by Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type of experiments can be explained by Boole's ideas. Violations of Bell's inequality also call for a revision of the mathematical abstractions and corresponding algebra. It will be shown that this particular view of Bell's inequalities points toward an incompleteness of quantum mechanics, rather than to any superluminal propagation or influences at a distance. © 2012 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

This paper investigates the efficiency of simulations for compressible turbulent flows with noise generation in complex geometries. It analyzes two different approaches and their suitability with respect to quality as well as turn around times required in industrial DoE processes. One approach makes use of a high order discontinuous Galerkin scheme. The efficiency of high order schemes on coarser meshes is compared to lower order schemes on finer meshes. The second approach is a 2nd order Finite Volume scheme, which employs a zonal coupling of LES and RANS to enhance efficiency in turbulence simulation. The schemes are applied to three industrial test cases which are described. Difficulties on HPC systems, especially load-balancing, MPI and IO, are pointed out and solutions are presented. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

It is demonstrated that the three-slit interference, as obtained from explicit solutions of Maxwell's equations for realistic models of three-slit devices, including an idealized version of the three-slit device used in a recent three-slit experiment with light [U. Sinha et al., Science 329, 418 (2010)], is nonzero. The hypothesis that the three-slit interference should be zero is the result of dropping the one-to-one correspondence between the symbols in the mathematical theory and the different experimental configurations, opening the route to conclusions that cannot be derived from the theory proper. It is also shown that under certain experimental conditions, this hypothesis is a good approximation.

A three-dimensional highly parallelized code for plasma simulation based on the Particle-In-Cell (PIC) approach using a discontinuous Galerkin method has been developed and validated within the instationary magneto-plasma dynamic (IMPD) thruster project1. With this code, it is for the first time possible to simulate the highly challenging gyrotron launcher and resonator, i.e. a high-energetic microwave source used for fusion-plasma heating, without using any physical approximations. We present the results of the gyrotron simulations with special focus on the parallelization capabilities of our code. For the gyrotron launcher, computations with up to 2048 processes have been performed. Parallel scaling of the PIC code with at most 1024 processes for simulating the gyrotron resonator is investigated in detail. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.
