This paper introduces the Stochastic Project Scheduling Simulation (SPSS) system and two additional useful statistical analysis tools. SPSS integrates CPM, PERT, and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) scheduling methods into one system. It can generate a CPM-based deterministic schedule, a PERT-based probabilistic schedule, and a simulation-based stochastic schedule for the project under study. Two additional statistical analysis tools are added to assist users in determining the number of simulation runs needed for a given schedule network and testing the significance of difference between two independent simulation experiments.

In an effort to improve the arch.tectural engineeringtechnology curriculum at the University of Hartford, educators and practitioners are working in collaboration. As design professionals, we are approaching the challenges of an integrative curriculum as we would an arch.tectural design project. The goals of the 'new' design curriculum are to improve student learning through effective implementation of practice. The curriculum promotes critical thinking, problem solving skills, and creativity. Realistic issues are integrated into the design studios - real programs, real sites, cost estimating, and scheduling. We are integrating 'the basics' arch.tectural history, arch.tectural theory, drawing, and technical courses (such as structures and environmental systems) with design. In the design studio courses, we are attempting to find balance and connection, and increase the awareness of the interrelationships between these areas of study for the students. Faculty, practitioners, and students know that learning in a compartmental fashion has never been that successful. We look towards this new integrative design studio approach as a better way to prepare our students for the demands of professional life.

The Construction Management approach, which balances the roles of arch.tect and Contractor with the best interest of the Owner in mind, is discussed. Construction Management as a delivery method for most large and/or complex projects can help improve communication, ensure that deadline are met and keep costs under control. It can also provide the arch.tect and Owner with a greater level of control over the product than the General Contractor or Design/Build methods. With experience in all the construction delivery methods, the Construction Management method is recommended as the preferred approach for most building projects.

A unique feature of large South Asian cities is the composition of their urban street traffic. Because many different traffic entities of varying size continuously interact on the street, the traffic mixture is heterogeneous. Heterogeneous traffic increases street capacity. Homogeneous traffic prevails in most North American, European, and Australian cities. Two broad categories comprise heterogeneous traffic: namely, motorized vehicles and nonmotorized entities. After collecting geometric, composition, speed, and conflict data at 14 midblock sites, heterogeneous traffic was examined at a microscopic level. The best model shows that the high-fatality midblock sites correlate to unidirectional street widths at a +0.89 correlation coefficient. The degree of heterogeneity and motorized traffic flow had the strongest relationship with street width at a +0.99 correlation coefficient. Given constant motor vehicle flow, the analyses revealed that when the traffic heterogeneity index approached 1 (i.e., 50 percent motorized and 50 percent nonmotorized), fewer midblock fatalities occurred.
