The Gestalt principle of perceptual organization argues that environment users perceive the overall configuration of the space rather than perceiving its elements separately. Perception of functionality in a particular interior space is influenced by the environmental appearance in accordance with the person's past experiences. This research attempts to associate the ambient lighting condition with the perceived functionality of the built environment, hypothesizing that the process works through the mood factor. In this initial research tool testing state, the research utilizes a set of 3d visual stimuli together with a questionnaire self-report to solicit response from subjects and a semantic differential method to analyze the data.

Utilizing window display arrangements in the Central World department Store in Bangkok as a case study, the research aims to elucidate the differentiation of design settings in attracting and conveying of merchandizing message to its target group. The research hypothesizes that the manipulation of window display design elements is able to convey the product positioning, value, and quality correctly. A set of 3d photographic stimulus with different design element is created to test with a group of 200 subjects for perceptual response and decision to purchase. Findings of the experiment are utilized to model the window display design principle.

distinctive human attribute such as age, sex, and cultural background posted much of the problems in the understanding of graphic representation. This research attempts to use pictorial icon in cell phone as a case study to reveal the age and cultural bias between age groups. Most of them are able to operate only the basic features. The study thus has an ultimate goal to discover an universally representation of iconic symbol, which would help enhance the learning ability of senior group in particular, and to improve the usage of other technological oriented appliances in general. Study in three features-complexity of iconic, the visual limitation of the aged, and the interpretation of iconic symbols. The first issue deals with the capability to learn new technology and the recollection. Next, deals with graphic icon visible format -simple, detailed and textual which include size and color. The final issue deals with the 2d/3d format, realistic/symbolic, and with/without textual display. The research found that respondents are proved to be equally able to learn complicated level as younger users. With reading glasses, they are able to visualize and understand simple icons as small as 5-10 mm. Complicated as 30 mm. Graphical icons with textual as 10-15 mm. Bright color for simple icon, cooler tone is for complicated ones. 2d is for familiar objects while 3d and realistic for unfamiliar ones. Textual representation could enhance the understanding of representation as well.

This paper investigates the thermal perceptual aspect from daily activities. The research uses the cases of small detached houses in Bangkok to examine the best manipulation of architectural elements to optimally provide thermal comfort in the Thai living context applying a multi-facet research methodology. Two aspects of design manipulation—the spatial arrangements and buildings feature—are examined towards the optimization modeling. The level of perceived comfort obtained from data analysis is used as input in the modeling program to be tested to obtain the model of comfort optimization strategy and to set the guideline of passive design for tropical climate.

This research attempts to test the purchasers’ perception on product appearance on their credential and quality. Marketing strategy attempts to apply this approach in a number of ways, among them, packaging has been a means to reflect the type and position of products. A set of 3d packaging stimuli embedded with distinctive design elements and features assuming to determine purchasers’ perceptions are utilized to test with a group of selected subjects on their cognitive and affective response reflected on the self-report questionnaire. Findings of the research are synthesized to form a design guideline for packaging which is able to boost the purchasers’ buying decision.

Traditionally and locally made handicrafts such as Thai silk, pottery and wood carving are considered part of products with vernacular style. development of such products need careful considerations, consumer discernment and aesthetic perceptions are among crucial factors determining the success of the design, and therefore, determining the acceptance of the products. The research uses a set of vernacular design as case study to test the cognitive perception of prospective users—between those who discern and not-discern the history of utensils. distinctive consumers—tourists from oversea, local folks, and urbanites—are controlled variables assumed to post different tastes and perceptions.

Conflicting purchasers’ and users’ appeal toward a design goal determining children and parent’ purchasing decision: a case of toy packing design

Conflicting design goals for users who are not purchasers such as toys and baby products is obviously a greater challenge for packaging design. Using computer game as a case study, this research derives an optimal design strategy to respond to the conflicting goals between that of users and purchasers. In the present initial stage of research tool development, the study found that a number of contradictory on preferences between children and parents existed. Most research tools are proved valid with small flaw to be corrected. Additional indicators on perceived affordance, safety, and value should be added for comparison reasons.

The research aims to investigate the spatial organization of landscape vis-à-vis the functional-behavioral settings of the local residence. Beliefs and social structure are analyzed vis-à-vis the development of physical conditions. Finally, the research examines dwellers’ perceptual response to the dynamic of cultural landscape. The research indicates that cultural landscape and physical area affect the perception and response of dwellers. Cultural identities are highly associated with the dynamic of cultural landscape. Spatial settings of newly developed urban areas should taking into consideration the local livelihood and residents’ inherited pattern of believe and ritual practice reflected upon the planned cultural landscape.
