The ability to retrieve accurate information from databases without an extensive knowledge of the contents and organization of each database is extremely beneficial to the dissemination and utilization of freight data. Advances in the artificial intelligence and information sciences provide an opportunity to develop query capturing algorithms to retrieve relevant keywords from freight-related natural language queries. The challenge is correctly identifying and classifying these keywords. On their own, current natural language processing algorithms are insufficient in performing this task for freight-related queries. High performance machine learning algorithms also require an annotated corpus of named entities which currently does not exist in the freight domain. This paper proposes a hybrid named entity recognition approach which draws on the individual strengths of models to correctly identify entities. The hybrid approach resulted in a greater precision for named entity recognition of freight entities - a key requirement for accurate information retrieval from freight data sources. © 2015 ASCE.

Bayesian inference approach to room-acoustic modal analysis

Spectrum estimation is a problem common to many fields of physics, science, and engineering, and it has thus received a great deal of attention from the Bayesian data analysis community. In room acoustics, the modal or frequency response of a room is important for diagnosing and remedying acoustical defects. The physics of a sound field in a room dictates a model comprised of exponentially decaying sinusoids. Continuing in the tradition of the seminal work of Bretthorst and Jaynes, this work contributes an approach to analyzing the modal responses of rooms with a time-domain model. Room acoustic spectra are constructed of damped sinusoids, and the modelbased approach allows estimation of the number of sinusoids in the signal as well as their frequencies, amplitudes, damping constants, and phase delays. The frequency-amplitude spectrum may be most useful for characterizing a room, but in some settings the damping constants are of primary interest. This is the case for measuring the absorptive properties of materials, for example. A further challenge of the room acoustic spectrum problem is that modal density increases quadratically with frequency. At a point called the Schroeder frequency, adjacent modes overlap enough that the spectrum - particularly when estimated with the discrete Fourier transform - can be treated as a continuum. The time-domain, model-based approach can resolve overlapping modes and in some cases be used to estimate the Schroeder frequency. The proposed approach addresses the issue of filtering and preprocessing in order for the sampling to accurately identify all present room modes with their quadratically increasing density.

This article is a result of a phenomenological study of Kampung Luar Batang, a historical urban kampung located at Ciliwung river estuary in Jakarta, Indonesia. Islam missionary, Al-Habib Husein bin Abubakar Allaydrus, has forged image of the kampung as a pilgrimage place because of his sacred maqom . Outsiders who visit to this sacred maqom increase the intensity of public space uses and the occupants’ economic activities. Religious, traditional and economic activities have simultaneously created unique overlapping layers. This paper's intention is to generate a model that might be able to decode the elements and the layers of this interesting phenomenon.

Acoustically coupled spaces have drawn increasing attention in architectural acoustics community. Measurements of multiple decay times in acoustically coupled spaces are of practical significance when studying and designing acoustics of the coupled spaces. Traditionally, however, identification of double- or multiple-sloped sound energy decay in room impulse response measurements has been considered very challenging. Previous works [Xiang and Goggans, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 110, 1415-1424 (2001);113, 2685-2697 (2003)] have applied Bayesian inference to cope with the demanding tasks in estimating number of decay modes and multiple decay times from Schroeder decay functions, evaluated from measured room impulse responses. This paper discusses recent development of efficient calculation of relevant decay parameters. We will show that Bayesian probability theory provides useful tools for the measurement of decay times. Analysis results of Bayesian approaches will be demonstrated upon experimentally measured room impulse responses.

Since the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 was established, which places the responsibility of construction safety on the employer, various injury prevention strategies have been developed and resulted in a significant improvement of safety management in the construction industry. However, during the last decade, construction safety improvement has decelerated and, due to the dynamic nature of construction jobsites, most safety management activities have focused on safety monitoring during the construction phase. Traditional safety planning approaches rely mostly on static information, tacit knowledge, regulations, company safety policies, and 2D drawings. As a result, site-specific dynamic information, temporal (e.g. when and who will be exposed to potential hazards) and spatial (e.g. location of dangerous zones) information are currently not specifically addressed. This paper presents a formalized 4-dimensional (4D) construction safety planning process that addresses site-specific temporal and spatial safety information. The safety data, which includes general safety knowledge, site-specific temporal and spatial information, will be integrated from a project schedule and a 3D model, respectively. The proposed safety planning approach is expected to provide safety personnel with a site-specific proactive safety planning tool that can be used to better manage jobsite safety. In addition, visual safety materials can also aid in training workers on safety and, consequently, being able to identify site-specific hazards and respond to them more effectively. © 2015 ASCE.

Groundwater quality assessment is critical for sustainable water resource management, especially in hyperarid regions like Adrar, Algeria, where data scarcity and environmental challenges hinder traditional monitoring methods. This study explores the application of three Few-Shot Learning (FSL) algorithms: Prototypical Networks, Siamese Networks, and Matching Networks, for groundwater quality classification using limited datasets. The dataset comprises 166 groundwater samples from the Adrar region, characterized by five quality classes: “Excellent,” “Very Good,” “Good,” “Satisfactory,” and “Unsatisfactory.” Results demonstrate that Prototypical Networks outperform other FSL algorithms, achieving 93 % accuracy with 10 support samples per class, while Siamese and Matching Networks achieve 90 % and 88 % accuracy, respectively. The study highlights the potential of FSL in addressing data scarcity, offering a cost-effective and efficient approach for groundwater quality assessment in data-scarce regions. The findings underscore the importance of FSL in complementing traditional methods, particularly in hyper arid areas where data collection is challenging.

Open loop geothermal energy systems (GES) extract groundwater through an extraction well, pass the water through a heat exchanger to remove or add heat, then reinject the cooled or heated water into the aquifer. Because the reinjected water has a different temperature than the ambient groundwater, reinjection creates a thermal plume that travels downgradient and can be harmful to downstream water users or ecosystems. The heat from the thermal plume dissipates as the plume travels through the aquifer, so after sufficiently long distances have been traveled, the water has returned to the ambient temperature of the aquifer. Thus, the sites chosen for GES should be located sufficiently far from temperature-sensitive ecosystems. We propose the adjoint method for identifying allowable locations of GES. With the adjoint method, information is propagated upgradient from the location of the ecosystem, such that only one adjoint simulation is required to evaluate the appropriateness of any location as a site for GES. The application of the adjoint method in this context requires the assumption that the water extraction and reinjection have a minimal influence on the flow field. In this work, the errors introduced by that assumption are evaluated, and a correction is developed to reduce the errors introduced by that assumption. The approach is applied and tested for a field site in Finland, where the ambient groundwater velocity is very low and therefore the extraction and reinjection of water at the GES substantially alters the flow field. © World Environmental and Water Resources Congress *** rights reserved

Obtaining broadband dynamic mechanical properties of viscoelastic materials is challenging. Commercially available characterization equipment is typically limited to about 500 Hz. Ultrasonic testing is a common strategy but requires time-temperature superposition extrapolation to audible frequencies. These techniques are indirect and sensitive to inhomogeneities. Modal methods do not yield broadband data and can fail for materials with high loss factors. A new relatively simple characterization method, relying on bending wave excitation and laser Doppler vibrometer measurement, is proposed. Complex elastic moduli and phase speeds are now attainable over the entire range of building acoustics frequencies. The materials under test are an array of polyurea aerogels with fixed chemical composition but tailorable nanomorphologies. Low cost and ease of synthesis add appeal to materials already noted for their sound transmission loss performance [4]. © 2019 Proceedings of the International Congress on Acoustics. Leaching behavior of sustainable concrete made with coal ash wastes as replacement of cement and sand

The coal-fired power plant fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) are gradually used as alternative materials in the concrete. However, knowledge of the leaching characteristics of using both incinerator ashes in concrete production is lacking. This work aimed to evaluate the leaching behavior of the FA and BA used in concrete production by employing batch and tank leaching tests. The outcomes of both leaching tests showed that there was no considerable leaching of any trace elements to the environment, and it remains much lower than standard limitations for utilization as construction materials. The results of cumulative mass discharge showed that the slope of flux time for all elements was less than 0.4 and because of that, primary surface wash-off was the main discharge process of all the heavy metals. Strength test results revealed that there was not much difference between coal ash concrete (CAC) and the control mix at the initial age of curing time. Despite that, at a long period of curing time (180 days), the compressive strength of CAC containing 20% FA as cement replacement and 100% BA as fine aggregate replacement increased by 76% due to the pozzolanic reaction of BA and FA in comparison to the normal concrete, while, due to the high porosity of BA, the workability of CAC decreased by 50%. The outcomes of the current work revealed that the combined use of FA and BA can be counted as a promising alternative in the production of sustainable concrete for structural applications toward sustainable development.
