This paper presents ideas on methods to introduce sustainability to first year engineering students. The first year environmental engineering course that all majors are required to take at the University of Colorado at Boulder was modified in fall 2009 to emphasize sustainability. An understanding of sustainability is an important foundation for all engineering students. In addition, it was hypothesized that emphasizing sustainability and the global impacts of environmental engineering would be interesting and motivational to students. At the start of the second lecture in the course, students were given a 12-question in-class survey on sustainability. Students also responded to in-class questions during the two sustainability lectures in real time using a Course Response System (clickers). The new assignment specifically on sustainability required the students to read the Royal Academy of engineering's "engineering for Sustainable Development" report and part of the "Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States" document. The second new assignment required the students to assess and compare different biofuel options based on journal articles that had conducted life cycle assessments (LCA). This assignment proved particularly challenging for the students. The reflective essays that students wrote in the final assignment of the semester indicated that the new course content successfully raised their awareness of sustainability. However, modifications to the assignments are planned. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

This project seeks to determine what relationship, if any, exists between background noise levels in elementary classrooms due to the building mechanical systems and student performance on achievement tests. Previous research in classroom acoustics has clearly identified that lower background noise levels result in higher speech intelligibility which is crucial for the learning process;however, there is a lack of data correlating lower noise levels to improved student achievement scores. For this study, background noise level measurements were made in 14 elementary schools in a public school system in Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA. The measurements were made in unoccupied classrooms with the central building mechanical systems activated. Second and fourth-grade classrooms were included in the study, which typically contain 7 to 8 and 9 to 10 year-old students, respectively. The unoccupied noise levels measured in the analyzed classrooms range from 36-50 dBA, none of which meets the background noise level recommendation of 35 dBA or less specified for classrooms in ANSI S12.60-2002 (R2009). These measured background noise levels have been correlated to reading comprehension and math standardized achievement test scores from students in the surveyed classrooms. Poverty rates were used as a control variable for the correlation analyses to factor out some of the socio-economic differences among the students. ANOVA and regression analyses were also performed to determine if learning for the younger and older students was impacted similarly by mechanical system noise and what background noise level should be attained in classrooms to meet state learning achievement goals. The results from this study show that, for the elementary school system tested, lower student reading comprehension scores were significantly related to higher background noise levels from building mechanical systems. ©2010 ASHRAE.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides a means for owners, designers, contractors, and operators to generate, organize and use detailed information throughout a project lifecycle. When properly implemented, these models can improve the efficiency of designs, allow for better feedback from project participants, and improve the accuracy and effectiveness for performing future construction tasks. An important aspect to the success of BIM is the process in which information is exchanged. Information should be both accessible and usable when required. This paper serves to identify categories of information exchange (IE) waste on a building project through the application of lean theory. Using this methodology, a pilot study was performed on a laboratory facility being constructed on The Pennsylvania State University campus. The results determined that lean theory can be applied and adapted to effectively determine IE waste. Future work includes calculating the cost associated with this waste, and converting the waste into an efficient information exchange process. Copyright 2010 ASCE.

The acoustical performance of a Coulomb Fiction damper, consisting of a case-hardened roll-threaded collar resting against a reverse taper segment of drill rod is discussed. Because of the axial impact, many transverse bending modes of vibration are excited in a long prismatic drill rod, along with longitudinal and torsional resonances. The collar is caused to simultaneously move axially due to its inertia and rotate on the rolled thread, illustrating its self-tightening nature. The collar consequently presses on the case-hardened tapered surface of the drill rod, inducing interfacial frictional rubbing which is conclusively shown to be present, resulting in 30 dB of attenuation of the modes of vibration. These observations are experimentally shown and theoretically verified.

In 2007, the American Society of Civil engineering's Committee on Faculty Development (CFD) conducted a longitudinal survey of all the past participants of the ExCEEd Teaching Workshop (ETW). The CFD received 173 responses, representing 40% of the ETW population at that time, to its survey about skills and the long term value of ETW. Important to this paper, 73% of the survey respondents said that they were interested in attending a post, advanced ETW. Motivated by these survey results, the CFD began its planning for a pilot ExCEEd II workshop during the 2008-2009 academic year. In the summer of 2009, ASCE offered its first ExCEEd II workshop for past ETW participants. This paper describes the day and a half ExCEEd II workshop along with a summary of results captured from two structured evaluations. All activities, except two, received average scores for value and conduct of 4.0 or better on a 1.0 to 5.0 scale. The participant teaching experience followed by the demonstration class taught by a master teacher were rated the highest in terms of their value to the participants. For some participants, the hands-on teaching experience coupled with the constructive and supportive feedback environment were cited as the main reasons for attending ExCEEd II. The program's cost was deemed reasonable and appropriate to the length, value, and conduct of the workshop. The participants recommended increasing the length of the workshop to two days;incorporating two participant teaching sessions;providing more information or time to the topics of brain functions, problem based learning, ETW review, and short in-class demonstrations or models;and adding content on evaluating student learning and integrating new teaching technologies. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

Predicting the insertion loss of an opening backed with an enclosed space is important for building noise control. Recent research in sound transmission through apertures of finite depth in infinite rigid baffles has included the effects of propagating and evanescent modes within the aperture in order to extend models to higher frequencies. The present study extends the model to the case of the aperture backed by a cavity as opposed to sound radiating into half-space. The role of coupling between the aperture modes, radiation modes, and cavity modes in the transmission was investigated. The results were compared to those of previous models which neglected the depth of the aperture and finite element modeling using COMSOL Multiphysics. Comparisons show that the current model is effective at predicting the sound transmission loss through the aperture and the acoustic field within the cavity for an obliquely incident plane wave. By changing impedance conditions on the half-space side of the aperture and within the aperture, the model has been used to evaluate passive noise control techniques.

engineering is still straggling to recruit and retain female students. Particular majors have more female students, such as environmental engineering where women earned 44.5% of the U.S. Bachelor's degrees in the 2006-2007 academic year, compared to an average of 18.1% across all majors. The reasons for these differences are not fully understood. This study compares the attitudes of female and male students in freshmen engineering courses in relation to how engineering benefits society. These traits were assessed using written surveys administered in first year engineering courses in environmental engineering (EVEN), civil engineering (CVEN), and general engineering (GEEN) at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 2004 to 2008. The surveys began with basic demographic questions (gender, race/ethnicity, major) and then presented a series of questions that students responded to on a Likert scale. Male students had a more favorable view of engineers' role in society than female students, based on responses to questions from the Pittsburgh Freshman engineering Attitudes Survey (PFEAS). Because previous studies have indicated that females want to benefit society through their work, the continuing poor perception of engineering as a helping profession among females may reflect recruiting problems. More revealing information was found in the reflective essays that the students write at the end of the semester summarizing their feelings about engineering and whether they plan to stay in the major or switch majors. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

Environmental engineers have an important role to play in solving the energy crisis;for example: extracting energy from traditional waste products;supplying and treating water associated with energy production;and conducting life cycle assessments to determine the overall best sources of energy considering the breadth of environmental impacts. Therefore, it is important to recruit and retain students interested in energy topics in environmental engineering (EVEN). At the University of Colorado at Boulder, other majors including chemical and electrical engineering are strongly recruiting students interested in energy. Our EVEN program approved a specialization option in energy in 2007/2008, and began advertising this on our website and in our recruiting brochure. In recent years the percentage of students in a first-year EVEN course who are primarily interested in energy issues has increased significantly. In the first assignment in fall 2006, 2007, and 2008 the percentage of students stating a primary interest in energy was 0%, 26%, and 35%, respectively. The first year course includes assignments and lectures to help students understand the role of energy in EVEN. In 2007 and 2008 there was a guest lecture on sustainable energy. In 2006 to 2008 the students completed a team project on solid waste management where they evaluated the methane generation potential from a landfill using the US EPA LandGEM software. In 2008 the students compared the energy yield from solid waste incineration to the energy that could be captured from the landfill methane. In 2008 the students individually considered the energy consumed in the lifecycle of tap water or bottled water, including extraction, treatment, and distribution. One of our professional guest speakers in 2008 worked in the energy sector, employed by the US EPA to review the Environmental Impact Statements for oil and gas extraction activities. In spring 2008 the American Academy of Environmental Engineers released a draft of the Body of Knowledge for Environmental engineering (EnvE BOK). The BOK outlines the skills and abilities that are needed to become a licensed Professional Engineer, and describes which should be acquired as part of an accredited Bachelor's degree. The ABET-accredited EnvE B.S. curriculum at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been mapped onto the BOK outcomes and knowledge domains. Most topics are well covered, however multimedia breadth and the knowledge domain of systems analysis are not the main focus of any required courses because our curriculum was built primarily from existing courses in Civil, Chemical, and Mechanical engineering. The outcomes of project management and business knowledge are covered primarily in the capstone design course. The BOK document may help inspire the next generation of Environmental Engineers. As such, it was discussed in the first year Introduction to EnvE course. The students in this course wrote an open-ended essay at the end of the semester to summarize their thoughts regarding EnvE. Themes that emerged from their 57 essays covered all of the outcome areas in the BOK, but some areas were discussed by more students than others. For example, 95% of all students mentioned science competency and water, but only 12% mentioned lifelong learning and 5% uncertainty. The comparisons are interesting, as the students gathered these thoughts based on hearing five guest speakers who are practicing EnvEs and other activities in the course. It is noteworthy that 35% of the students stated that their sub-area of greatest interest was energy but the role of environmental engineers in solving the energy crisis was not emphasized in the draft BOK;the final BOK has expanded emphasis on energy. Some researchers have indicated that teams with greater cognitive diversity produce superior results. Cognitive diversity can take a variety of forms, but in this work diversity of personality types is explored. The impact of cognitive styles on team performance was evaluated in a freshman environmental engineering (EVEN) course. The students worked on projects involving comparative analysis and some calculations, but no design or intrinsically "creative" requirements. Specifically, student teams in 2006, 2007, and 2008 evaluated solid waste landfills. In 2006 and 2007 the project encompassed three or four periods of in-class direction and work time. In 2008, the project was modified to compare the energy and environmental impacts of landfills to waste-to-energy incinerators and included only two class periods with instructor direction (lecture and question/answer). Three different methods were used to form the student teams. In 2006, student grades in the class to date were used to create groups with similar average scores. In 2007, each team included a non first-year student or a student in the honors program in an attempt to assign a potential "team leader" for each group. An evaluation tool to determine perception and judgment roles based on Jungian typology38 was administered via a written questionnaire to the students on the first day that the semester-project was introduced. This enabled determination of the cognitive diversity on the pre-assigned teams. In 2008, the cognitive style inventory results were used to create teams with maximum diversity. Earlier in the semester, student groups assigned alphabetically compared drinking water alternatives. The team performance on the landfill project across the three years of the project was compared. There was not a strong indication that consideration of cognitive diversity in team formation improved the quality of the project report as indicated by higher grades.
