The response of biofilters to the mixtures of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde found in the waste gases emitted from ethanol production facilities was studied. The effect of acetic acid and ethanol on aldehyde removals was analyzed. Dissolved oxygen concentrations did not influenced single aldehyde degradation in the batch reactors under the test conditions. However, the enrichment conditions of the consortium showed significant impact on acetate degradation. High removal efficiencies of a single aldehyde can be achieved over the loading ranges typical of ethanol plant emissions. Excess nitrate, mainly due to agricultural fertilizers, is a common problem in the surface water and groundwater of the Coastal Plain of the eastern United States. Baseflow conditions have been studied in an effort to understand nutrient loading to coastal waters, but there are many unanswered questions pertaining to nitrate flux during storm events. An automated stream sampler was deployed to collect water from a stream on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, USA, whenever stream stage rose following a rainfall event. Baseflow nitrate concentrations were typically 2.0-2.2mgNO3--NL -1, and concentrations decreased rapidly with the onset of precipitation. Slightly in advance of peak discharge, the typical streamwater concentration was reduced to approximately 0.2-0.4mgNO3--NL-1. Streamwater nitrate concentrations slowly returned to pre-storm levels after the discharge level returned to baseflow. Even though the nitrate concentration of surface water decreased during storms, the average storm nitrate flux was approximately a factor of 3 times greater than the average base flow nitrate. Large quantities of nitrate were quickly transferred during storms due to the large volume of water with low nitrate concentrations flowing in the stream. Insights to nutrient management, particularly considering rates of biological uptake of nitrate, are supported by this more complete understanding of the dynamic flux of streamwater nitrate to coastal waters. © 2008 ASCE.

In response to the need for faculty training, the American Society of Civil Engineers developed and funded the ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil engineering Education) Teaching Workshop that is today - the summer of 2008 - celebrating its tenth year of existence. For the past decade, nineteen ExCEEd Teaching Workshops (ETW) have been held at the United States Military Academy, the University of Arkansas, and Northern Arizona University, with two more workshops scheduled for this summer for a total of 21 offerings. ETW has realized 449 graduates from 203 different U.S. and international colleges and universities. This paper summarizes the content of ETW, assesses its effectiveness, highlights changes in the program as a result of the assessment, and outlines future directions. The assessment data were obtained from multiple survey instruments conducted during each workshop, surveys taken six months to a year after the workshop, and a ten year longitudinal survey. copy;American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Investigations of Incorporating Source Directivity Into Room Acoustics Computer Models to Improve Auralizations

Room acoustics computer modeling and auralizations are useful tools when designing or modifying acoustically sensitive spaces. In this dissertation, the input parameter of source directivity has been studied in great detail to determine, first, its effect in room acoustics computer models and, second, how to better incorporate the directional source characteristics to improve auralizations. The room acoustics computer model was initially validated in terms of accurately incorporating the input source directivity. The next study demonstrated that using directional sources over an omnidirectional source in room acoustics computer models produces significant differences both in terms of calculated room acoustics parameters and auralizations. A recently proposed technique for creating auralizations using multichannel anechoic recordings has been examined with numerous subjective studies, applied to both solo instruments and an orchestra. Through these studies, this process was shown to be effective in terms of improving the realism and source width of the auralizations in a number of cases and also modeling different source orientations. In addition, this approach was applied to modeling an entire orchestra with individual sources, in three different configurations, for the first time. CAD among those is tried to use coordination environment tool that coordinate various work process, not just drawings tool. 4D model that is connected with schedule information by using 3D model information is utilized for many project. This paper will discuss how 4D model is connected with RFTD system that can get real time information for introducing real time progress management monitoring system at steel construction. And the paper introduces the how can use schedule information that is connected with real time input information. Last, The way of real time monitoring system that monitor construction information by using automated creation schedule information, 4D system and RFID system will be introduced. © ICROS.

When looking at recent debates on sustainability one can observe that implicit within these debates is a criticism against the values, attitudes, and tools by which most of the built environment has been produced over the years, that has led to social alienation and environmental depletion. Several definitions of sustainability correspond with this criticism, where some definitions focus on environmental criteria while others integrate socio-cultural aspects into environmental concerns. The main idea behind the notion of sustainability is to create an effective system of resource distribution and utilization with a long term perspective in mind (ECE, 1996). A sustainable society in this respect is one that can persist over generations, one that is far sighted enough, flexible enough, and wise enough not to undermine either its physical or its social systems of support.

A new course, engineering for the Developing World (EDW), has been taught since fall 2005. The course goals include: (i) introduce students to open ended problems at the community level;(ii) help students develop the skills to solve those problems and provide holistic engineering solutions that are sustainable and appropriate to the community being served;(iii) help students develop cultural and social awareness;(iv) help students work in interdisciplinary teams;(v) give students the opportunity to reflect on the importance of their community service;(vi) give students a professional work ethic, and (vii) help students gain a better understanding of the importance of engineering in society and in community development. Two different models for the course have been used: in year one, a single team of three students worked on two different projects for a community in Rwanda over two semesters, earning six credits that could be applied as technical electives in their respective majors. In year two, twelve students in three teams worked on a wastewater treatment/reuse design for a community in Sonora, Mexico. In this format, students earned 3 to 4 credits for the course, which counted as the capstone design experience in their curricula. The students self-selected this international project from among three project options (the other two were service learning projects within the state) in the capstone Environmental engineering design class. Student evaluations of the EDW course are presented and contrasted against feedback from students who worked on other service learning projects or a traditional civil engineering project. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The position of department head is incredibly important to any university. Because many new department heads are faculty members who have little to no leadership or management experience, some orientation training is warranted. This paper investigates the topics that should be covered in such training. The results are based on a survey of existing civil engineering department heads and an examination of the training already available through universities and professional societies. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Selecting a delay analysis method in resolving construction claims

Delays occur commonly in construction projects. Assessing the impact of delay is sometimes a contentious issue. Several delay analysis methods are available but no one method can be universally used over another in all situations. The selection of the proper analysis method depends upon a variety of factors including information available, time of analysis, capabilities of the methodology, and time, funds and effort allocated to the analysis. The paper reviews 20 research studies that discuss various aspects of delay analysis methods and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of widely used delay analysis methods, including the as-planned vs. as-built, impact as-planned, collapsed as-built, and time impact analysis methods. The paper also discusses the most important issues in delay analysis that affect the results of the analysis. The selection of a suitable analysis method depends heavily on the availability of scheduling data, the familiarity of the analyst with the capabilities of the software used in the project, clear specifications in the contract concerning the treatment of concurrent delays and the ownership of float. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd and IPMA. In the midst of the current environment-conscious era, sustainable architecture and sustainable engineering are seen as the vehicle to creating green buildings. This paper investigates the role of daylighting systems in green design. The paper argues that: engineering of daylighting systems is necessary to optimize the use of energy in buildings. The use of engineering principles in the design for daylight may overcome the current barriers to effective incorporation of daylighting systems in buildings;in academia and in practice. That is why more emphasis should be given to experimental research in the field of daylighting systems in order to establish a set of rigorous engineering principles for the design of daylighting systems. In the end, the paper gives a brief description of a new model of an artificial sky dome that is designed by OSU faculty. This artificial sky dome is now under construction and will be used by undergraduate and graduate students to perform experimental research in the field of daylighting design. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.
