The response of biofilters to the mixtures of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde found in the waste gases emitted from ethanol production facilities was studied. The effect of acetic acid and ethanol on aldehyde removals was analyzed. Dissolved oxygen concentrations did not influenced single aldehyde degradation in the batch reactors under the test conditions. However, the enrichment conditions of the consortium showed significant impact on acetate degradation. High removal efficiencies of a single aldehyde can be achieved over the loading ranges typical of ethanol plant emissions. In response to the need for faculty training, the American Society of Civil Engineers developed and funded the ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil engineering Education) Teaching Workshop that is today - the summer of 2008 - celebrating its tenth year of existence. For the past decade, nineteen ExCEEd Teaching Workshops (ETW) have been held at the United States Military Academy, the University of Arkansas, and Northern Arizona University, with two more workshops scheduled for this summer for a total of 21 offerings. ETW has realized 449 graduates from 203 different U.S. and international colleges and universities. This paper summarizes the content of ETW, assesses its effectiveness, highlights changes in the program as a result of the assessment, and outlines future directions. The assessment data were obtained from multiple survey instruments conducted during each workshop, surveys taken six months to a year after the workshop, and a ten year longitudinal survey. copy;American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Room acoustics computer modeling and auralizations are useful tools when designing or modifying acoustically sensitive spaces. In this dissertation, the input parameter of source directivity has been studied in great detail to determine, first, its effect in room acoustics computer models and, second, how to better incorporate the directional source characteristics to improve auralizations. The room acoustics computer model was initially validated in terms of accurately incorporating the input source directivity. The next study demonstrated that using directional sources over an omnidirectional source in room acoustics computer models produces significant differences both in terms of calculated room acoustics parameters and auralizations. A recently proposed technique for creating auralizations using multichannel anechoic recordings has been examined with numerous subjective studies, applied to both solo instruments and an orchestra. Through these studies, this process was shown to be effective in terms of improving the realism and source width of the auralizations in a number of cases and also modeling different source orientations. In addition, this approach was applied to modeling an entire orchestra with individual sources, in three different configurations, for the first time. When looking at recent debates on sustainability one can observe that implicit within these debates is a criticism against the values, attitudes, and tools by which most of the built environment has been produced over the years, that has led to social alienation and environmental depletion. Several definitions of sustainability correspond with this criticism, where some definitions focus on environmental criteria while others integrate socio-cultural aspects into environmental concerns. The main idea behind the notion of sustainability is to create an effective system of resource distribution and utilization with a long term perspective in mind (ECE, 1996). A sustainable society in this respect is one that can persist over generations, one that is far sighted enough, flexible enough, and wise enough not to undermine either its physical or its social systems of support.
