Natural and electrical lighting have received attention in hospital environments due to their ability to increase hospital staffs’ performance, improve shift workers’ circadian rhythm and improve patients’ recovery. Researchers have investigated health care staffs’ satisfaction with their lit work environment in real-life settings;however, staff members’ perception of a circadian lighting system (CLS) that operates automatically has yet to be researched. This paper presents the implementation of a CLS installed in a newly built hospital. It presents a comparison of staff members’ satisfaction and visual comfort after implementation of the circadian lighting system to the pre-existing lighting (PeL) solution at Neuro Intensive Care Unit and Postanesthesia Care Unit. The study was conducted using two surveys, supplemented with input from interviews. The study showed a statistically significant satisfaction with the CLS compared with the PeL, and they found the CLS easier to use and to adjust. The staff working in rooms with multiple patients appreciated the ability to adjust the lighting to the individual patient. These findings show that circadian lighting complements a complex work environment and requires close collaboration with occupants for a successful implementation and long-term use of the lighting system. © 2023, The Authors. Balance disorders, particularly in the elderly population, pose a significant public health challenge due to the associated risk of falls. Exercise-based therapies are effective for reducing this risk but face limitations like cost, accessibility, and sustaining patient engagement. By enabling personalized rehabilitation through engaging exergames, Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promising, cost-effective solution. This paper presents the collaborative design and preliminary evaluation of two VR-based games targeting specific balance skills. Developed in collaboration with a physiotherapist with extensive experience with patients with balance disorders, the games align with a rehabilitation protocol used by the therapist that categorizes training based on individual balance skills. Inspired by traditional physiotherapy exercises, the gameplay aims to train the same skills. Six health professionals agreed on the games’ therapeutic potential, while recommending improvements in usability, difficulty adjustment and monitoring of patient progress.

Keyboard shortcuts have been proven to be the most efficient method of issuing commands in computer software. Using the mouse in graphical user interfaces provides an intuitive but slow method for executing functions in a software. Many fail to make the transition to faster modalities, such as keyboard shortcuts. This is not just the case for novices, but also users with years of experience. This study examines the research on this behavior, as well as how the concepts of nudging and ambient suggestion can be used to actively encourage and support the usage of keyboard shortcuts. Based on this research, a design is proposed and implemented in a simple word processor application. A user experience evaluation was done, by having participants perform writing and formatting tasks inside the application. Using the Microsoft Reaction Card Method followed by a semi-structured interview, the users elaborated on their experience. In the interviews topics and questions of motivation, distraction, and annoyance were raised. The results showed that most participants found the system convenient and helpful in learning shortcuts without being too obtrusive. There are promising first indications of it having potential in promoting the usage of keyboard shortcuts, however further research is required in order to make any generalizations. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

In recent times, there has been a considerable shift in the way engineering education is approached, with increased demands for active learning and methodologies that emphasize soft skills, such as ability to communicate effectively, identify and solve problems, and function on multidisciplinary teams. Within this scope, two methods have particularly been of interest in recent years: the flipped classroom and simulation learning. Ample evidence exists pertaining to the efficiency of the flipped classroom methodology. Similarly, extended state-of-the-art review suggests that proper application of simulation games in engineering education has the potential to maximize the learning outcome and transferability of academic knowledge to the industry. However, combining the flipped classroom with other active learning methodologies is a more recent development which has huge potential. This paper aims at examining to what extent simulations and the flipped classroom can be used in conjunction to support students' motivation, engagement and learning outcomes. It will present findings based on a scoping review of research incorporating both methods. This review highlights how combination of simulation and the flipped classroom ranks higher than either of these methods alone. It makes an argument towards the use of meaningful gamification to enhance this combined model towards a more efficient holistic learning experience. © 2020 SEFI 47th Annual Conference: Varietas Delectat... The presented paper address the complex condition of analyzing and simulating anisotropic responsive material systems in architecture, focused on thermally-activated wood envelopes. The objective is to define, develop and present a design integrated workflow for simulating, predicting and steering material performance, as a key factor for the development of adaptive material systems, developable into adaptive building envelopes. Using methods from associated disciplines of engineering, material science and computer graphics, the studies employ adopted and adapted techniques for advanced material analysis and simulation. From this approach, we illustrate a new cyclical design method for high predictability and simulation of anisotropic material systems, with low scale specification data. With a special focus on hybrid responsive systems and functionally graded materials (FGM), we ask how to integrate material performance, engage with high degrees of interdependency and allow the emergence of design feedback between the multiple scales of architectural construction. With a parallel equally concerned approach on material specification and data processing methods, the experimental computational and prototyping studies conclude with a series of critical factors for high precision steering of material performance in an architectural scale. © 2020 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

The paper presents and discusses new methods to identify, understand, develop and test novel timber composites for exergy-based adaptive behaviour. The aim of the paper is the development of new design integrated methods for the implementation of active responsive materials in architecture and construction, focused on application for intrinsic thermal responsive and adaptive architectural surfaces. Through material-driven and computational studies, the paper presents a material design survey across three groups of responsive timber composites - single-veneer elements, bi-layers and functionally graded materials (FGM) and a systematic comparative review of their dynamic thermal responsive and structural performance, in relation to operative temperature regulation. Based on the first studies, an oak responsive specimen is developed and further tested towards implementation, as part of an adaptive envelope demonstrator. The research findings suggest that the coordination between geometric arrangement, material layout, hierarchy and binding techniques between the different oak layers leads to the development of a wider range of behavioural system outputs and allow for high resolution steering of the exergy-based responsive timber composites performance in an architectural scale. Finally, the paper speculates on future fabrication strategies and architectural applications of multi-material composites that could introduce new hybrid properties in the responsive architectural system. © PLEA 2020 - 35th PLEA Conference on Passive and Low Energy architecture Planning Post Carbon Cities, Proceedings.

In higher education, transdisciplinary master programs have been developed to afford students to combine knowledge and methodologies from different fields and thereby develop an understanding of how to create new innovative solutions. An international and transdisciplinary science and engineering master programme in Lighting design (LiD) at Aalborg University (AAU) in Copenhagen, bases its teaching on problem-based learning (PBL) and a process model "The Lighting design Experiment" (LDE), which integrates innovation processes and design research methodologies [1] [2]. Knowledge and methods from the fields of architecture, media technology and lighting engineering are to be synthesized and applied into a problem-based semester project. To investigate to which degree students do consider creativity and innovation as integrated parts of their semester projects, a survey was carried out with 20 students from seven semester project groups, looking for aspects within two creativity components;domain relevant skills and creativity relevant processes [3] [4]. The survey indicates that the transdisciplinary approach seems to create the desired synthesis of knowledge and skills, from each academic field into the semester project despite the different knowledge areas and methodologies represented in the courses of the semester. Whereas the investigation of the creative processes points out three areas of attention for improvement;the framing of the project, the group dynamics, and tools for idea generation. The outcome has provided a better understanding of the inherent potential and barriers for creativity in the transdisciplinary design process, and how to possibly improve these in this PBL project-based design approach. © 2020 SEFI 47th Annual Conference: Varietas Delectat... Every year, around one-third of elderly individuals experience falls at home, especially in high-risk areas like bathrooms and stairs. Uneven floor surfaces exacerbate these dangers, impeding elderly mobility and significantly increasing fall risks, with recurrent falls being common. Recognizing this pressing concern, our project introduces a “Human Fall Detection and Estimation System” to mitigate harm. This system deploys a specialized camera with gesture recognition software to monitor for falls by detecting posture deviations. When a fall occurs, the system records the location and uses advanced Image Processing for precise Pose Estimation. Deep Learning analyzes Pose Estimation data to gauge fall severity and simultaneously alerts caregivers via the network for swift assistance. Incidents are logged in a database for root cause analysis, facilitating more effective elderly care systems. our system plays a crucial role in preventing and addressing elderly falls, swiftly detecting and assessing incidents, and alerting caregivers [1], enhancing elderly safety and well-being.

In spatial design, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools often generate the entire spatial design outcome in a single automated step, rather than engaging users in a deepening and iterative process. This significantly reduces users’ involvement, learning, and creative capabilities, leading to a superficial understanding of spatial design. We conducted a Wizard-of-Oz study, where Novices and AI (acted by experimenters) worked together to finish spatial design tasks using various AI models. We identified typical function and workflow patterns adopted by the participants, leading to the understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the human-AI co-creation process. Based on insights gathered from this research, we proposed some design implications of the novice-AI collaboration system that aims to democratize spatial design through a progressive, iterative co-creation process. Methods for pitch analysis in contemporary popular music: highlighting pitch uncertainty in Primaal’s commercial works

We identify characteristic features of how pitch is manipulated for expressive purposes by Hyper Music, a mainstream commercial music company specialising in advertisement music for global corporations. The study shows that the use and organisation of pitch in the company’s ‘Primaal’ brand differs from Western classical music. Through interviews with producers and in-depth analysis of their work, we reveal that their methods centre on a conscious aim to construct a musical discourse based on pitch uncertainty, contrasting with the clear transmission of well-defined pitches in Western classical traditions. According to the Primaal producers, who acknowledge the influence of artists such as Kanye West and Daft Punk and use widely available technology, pitch uncertainty captures the listener’s attention. We provide analyses of musical excerpts demonstrating their approach, alongside descriptions of the tools and methods employed to achieve their expressive goals. These goals and methods are placed in a broader historical context, contrasting with fundamental principles of pitch organisation in Western music. Techniques used by Hyper Music to introduce and control pitch uncertainty include boosting upper partials, expressive use of inharmonicity, continuous pitch distributions around ‘poles’ tied to specific ‘modes’, and continuously evolving pitch. We examine these techniques from a psychoacoustic perspective, and conduct listening tests corroborating some of the observations.
