In this paper we propose a shared regression network to jointly estimate the pose of multiple objects, replacing multiple object-specific solutions. We demonstrate that this shared network can outperform other similar approaches that rely on multiple object-specific models by evaluating it on the TLESS dataset using the VSD (Visible Surface Discrepancy). Our approach offers a less complex solution, with fewer parameters, lower memory consumption and less training required. Furthermore, it inherently handles symmetric objects by using a depth-based loss during training and can predict in real-time. Finally, we show how our proposed pipeline can be used for fine-tuning a feature extractor jointly on all objects while training the shared pose regression network. This fine-tuning process improves the pose estimation performance.

During field surveys carried out by the authors, it was noticed that thermal perception voting of children is not in line with the expected thermal perceptions according to comfort models. Literature indicates that temperature may well be perceived differently by children, as compared to adults. At moderate temperatures, surveyed children seem to experience warmer thermal sensations than expected from the PMV-model. However, at elevated temperatures, children appeared to perceive environments as less warm than predicted by the model. Operative Temperature requirements for buildings (as mentioned in standards like EN 16798-1 and EN-ISO 7730) that are used primarily by children, most importantly schools, may therefore not provide adequate comfort for them. Does this mean that lowered temperature limits for environments where children are the main users should be used? Does this imply that mechanical cooling systems or intelligent passive cooling solutions should become 'obligatory' in school buildings where they can be afforded? Given the consequences of active school building cooling on energy use, it is therefore important to have a good understanding of this apparent discrepancy between how thermal comfort is perceived by adults and children. It is proposed in the paper that the thermal perception of children, and the consequences on the temperature requirements for schools is a subject that needs greater research, understanding and discussion. © 2020 11th Windsor Conference: Resilient Comfort, WINDSOR 2020 - Proceedings. Internal and external migration from vernacular settlements is not a new phenomenon. However, the scale and scope increased when forced migration is becoming exacerbated due to both armed conflicts and climate change. Political tensions are one of the most common threats to vernacular dwellings in conflict areas. Not only do destruction and vandalism cause harm to vernacular architecture, but people living in vernacular buildings are often forced to leave their homes in order to seek safety. On the other hand, vernacular architecture can help refugee crises in hosting countries. Billions of dollars are invested in establishing temporary refugee camps, yet we know for a fact they are rarely temporary. People stay in such camps for decades, commonly Cons located on the outskirts of cities, where vernacular settlements also tend to be. Investments in rebuilding, restoring and reusing vernacular settlements can be a win-win situation. The time and cost of the rehabilitation process might also not be suitable to many camps, or camp-like, contexts. Also, encounters some regulations for listed vernacular heritage sites that cannot be used as dwellings and must be kept as open museums. In this study, a proposal for reusing and rehabilitating vernacular settlements will be discussed together with reflections on challenges and obstacles. The case study chosen for this research is in the Middle East, where the majority of refugees settled after the Arab Spring. The evolution of inharmonicity and noisiness in contemporary popular music

Much of Western classical music relies on instruments based on acoustic resonance, which produce harmonic or quasi-harmonic sounds. In contrast, since the mid-twentieth century, popular music has increasingly been produced in recording studios, where it is not bound by the constraints of harmonic sounds. In this study, we use modified MPEG-7 features to explore and characterise the evolution of noise and inharmonicity in popular music since 1961. We place this evolution in the context of other broad categories of music, including Western classical piano music, orchestral music, andmusique concrète. We introduce new features that distinguish between inharmonicity caused by noise and that resulting from interactions between discrete partials. Our analysis reveals that the history of popular music since 1961 can be divided into three phases. From 1961 to 1972, inharmonicity in popular music, initially only slightly higher than in orchestral music, increased significantly. Between 1972 and 1986, this rise in inharmonicity was accompanied by an increase in noise, but since 1986, both inharmonicity and noise have moderately decreased. In recent years (up to 2020), popular music has remained much more inharmonic than popular music from the 1960s or orchestral music involving acoustic resonance instruments. However, it has become less noisy, with noise levels comparable to those of orchestral music. We relate these trends to the evolution of music production techniques. In particular, the use of multi-tracking may explain the higher inharmonicity in popular music compared to orchestral music. We illustrate these trends with analyses of key artists and tracks.

Noise containing both strong narrowband and broadband components generated by rotating machine occur in many situations where active noise control is desirable. Such noise may be reduced by hybrid active noise control (HANC) methods, as shown in previous work. However, the performance of conventional HANC methods decrease when impulsive interference occurs. To improve the tracking and robustness of such HANC systems, a new hybrid noise control system with anti-pulse variable step size algorithm (APV-HANC) is proposed. By using new variable step size method and HANC structure, the APV-HANC method has better tracking and robustness performance of the whole system when impulsive noise occurs. Theoretical analysis and simulations confirms the superior performance of the proposed method. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper explores the evolution of Geodesign in addressing spatial and environmental challenges from its early foundations to the recent integration of artificial intelligence (AI). AI enhances existing Geodesign methods by automating spatial data analysis, improving land use classification, refining heat island effect assessment, optimizing energy use, facilitating green infrastructure planning, and generating design scenarios. Despite the transformative potential of AI in Geodesign, challenges related to data quality, model interpretability, and ethical concerns such as privacy and bias persist. This paper highlights case studies that demonstrate the application of AI in Geodesign, offering insights into its role in understanding existing systems and designing future changes. The paper concludes by advocating for the responsible and transparent integration of AI to ensure equitable and effective Geodesign outcomes.

This contribution provides an overview of the Sound and Music Computing conference and community over the course of its sixteen years. As a sequel to a previous corresponding contribution investigating the community ten years ago, here we analyze the proceedings of the past editions, as well as the changes in the organization of the conference itself. The analysis reveals the growth of the SMC community in terms of attendees and countries represented at the conference, highlights the changes in trends and topics, and provides insights on the directions of the conference. A reflection is made with regards to the SMC roadmap originally conceived in 2004. To limit musculoskeletal disorders we are working towards implementing collaborative robotics in strenuous or repetitive production work. Our objective is to evaluate augmented reality (AR) devices for assisting in near-distance tasks before applying and testing the displays in the context of human-robot collaboration in a production setting. This chapter describes the hardware setup and procedure for testing AR systems for showing sub-surface positions of foreign elements in an opaque mass. The goal is it test four types of setup in terms of user accuracy and speed, the four setups being a head-mounted see-through display, a mounted tablet-based see-through display, top-down surface projection and overlays on a static monitor. The experiment is carried out using a tracked HTC Vive controller with a needle attachment. Precision tasks are performed by 48 participants and each display is evaluated using the System Usability Scale and the NASA Task Load Index. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2019.

In 2017 it was believed that nearly 50mio people suffered from dementia. Besides the actual patients, the group that is mostly affected by this disease are informal caregivers. Informal caregivers - people without a formal education in the field of health care - can suffer from severe physical- and mental health issues due to the changing behaviour of the person with dementia. It has been shown that these can be overcome by giving the caregivers information and guidance about dementia at an early stage of the condition. In this paper we present our investigation of an interactive experience-based Virtual Reality game and how it can inform informal caregivers about symptoms of dementia. Our initial exploration demonstrates the potential that such a game holds in supporting informal caregivers. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.

One of the biggest challenges in learning how to play a musical instrument is learning how to move one's body with a nuanced physicality. technology can expand available forms of physical interactions to help cue specific movements and postures. This cueing can reinforce new sensorimotor couplings to enhance motor learning and performance. Using Mixed Reality (MR), we present a system that allows students to share a first-person audiovisual perspective with a piano teacher. Students place their hands into the virtual gloves of a teacher. Motor learning and audio-motor associations are reinforced through motion feedback and spatialized audio.
