The project 'Incentive to Form' has identified a number of thematic attacks on form studies - in strong paper - which create new forms which often contain stronger qualities than the preliminary work. Incentives are, in this context, forms created by folding paper over variations of straight lines and smooth curves, which are contemporary form studies to sculptures or design. The acclaimed form studies that pose the core of our studies were carried out by artist and architect Erik Lynge, who was also much appreciated in the educational context for his teaching methods. The phenomenological study reveals how Lynge's sources of inspiration and his intentions with the incentives can be decoded from conserved works and photographic research. The aim of the study of the form studies is to decode and communicate results, since Lynge mainly chose to express his results of the form studies through dialogue and by oral presentation of incentives. A dialogue about form and the activities in the learning environment were central to Lynge's teachings. The dialogue and form experiments were combined with encouragement to seek inspiration in nature and science. The thematic attack was based on a tentative taxonomy grouping of Lynge's surviving incentives and verified by architecture and design students. The Danish designer Andres Nicolai Hansen's and architect Poul Christiansen's many successful designs created as output from incentives, illustrate that incentives created by the folding technique are not only valuable in the learning process but also in a professional practice.

Future wellbeing is depending on human competences in order to strengthen a sustainable development. This requires system thinking and ability to deal with complexity, dynamic and a vast of information. 'We need to move away from present principles of breaking down problems into components and give more attention to the underlying models, information management and shared goals. Simple machine understanding and obvious goals are not suitable to explain present states or how to reach a better state' (1). 'design is a universal method in the Age of Information' (2). Education of interdisciplinary and intercultural teams in design and the understanding of design as a process of transformation and information management call for a model with capacity to facilitate both 'the what' and 'the how' This paper will describe a systemic model of design based on a holistic approach to design developed by the author in relation to a design-engineering education at Aalborg University. It will exemplify how the model has been used in workshops on team designing, challenged design learning and affected design competence. In specific it will investigate the influence of visual models on the perception of design, design thinking and communication in design. Trying to answer the question: How can visual system models facilitate learning in design thinking and team designing?
This paper presents a comparative analysis between a physical model, a set of virtual reality (VR) models and a set of augmented reality (AR) models of the same architectural project. A set of architectural participa...

This research project investigates how procedures from agile software development can be of benefit to development activities in projects of design engineering students. The agile methods Scrum and Time boxing are evaluated through a student workshop focusing on near-future concepts for design competitions. Scrum meetings within the student design teams are conducted and video documented each hour throughout the workshop activities as a structured process evaluation tool. Based on a subsequent student survey it is argued that scrum and time boxing are strengthening the focus, communication and awareness of methodical efficiency of the student teams. It is therefore further argued that these methods are both applicable and useful to none-software projects, and that they may correspond to a general tendency of a faster pace in product development within the markets of lifestyle products.

How can you improve and focus on the knowledge produced through a design project by design students? The range of skills and competencies in design education is not limited to the ability to handle different types of projects themes. In an overall perspective a master education at a university is also about acquiring skills and competencies in adapting, producing and reflecting on knowledge in a design process. Using learning theory in a number of cases this paper will unfold the principles, structure and tools used in the process reporting to describe the inherent reflections in the design process can emphasize the knowledge production aspects of the process. By making the reflections and evaluation more explicit and accessible this provide a platform for the student to relate to the type of knowledge produced by various activities and methods making theory of science very tangible and inherent in the process. It also allows for an examination that revolves around how the design solution came to be, rather than focusing on the solution itself and thus placing the design student's awareness on knowledge production as a central and embedded part and of the education.
This paper presents the good practice based experiences found when movement is used to strengthen form creation and to create flow in the process of artistic education. Faced with the design engineering students' ...
