Selection of multiple objects is a frequent interaction task in virtual environments. Accomplishing this task efficiently and intuitively is difficult, especially in cases where there are a very large number of objects to be selected. In this work, we seek to investigate two well-known techniques, a spherical brush and a box-shaped lasso for multiple object selection (MOS), and compare them to a new MOS technique, which we have named the magic wand. This new technique automates a lot the work, which the user would normally have to do manually. The comparison is made through a user study, where users are presented with a range of different geometric layouts of selection targets, to investigate the pros and cons of each of the MOS techniques. The evaluation shows that the magic wand is significantly faster to use than the other techniques, however the quality of the magic wand's selections is highly dependent on the geometric scenario. The spherical brush proved to be a good overall technique, whereas the box lasso proved slow and inaccurate even in geometric scenarios specifically designed for the lasso. © 2012 IEEE.

designing for and through movement is becoming increasingly important in human computer interaction, and it is widely accepted that the designers should develop their bodily skills and learn how to use the movement as design material. Yet, the reports on the education space around embodied interaction are scarce. We present an approach for teaching and designing embodied interaction in collaboration with contemporary dance choreographers. We describe a workshop, where after movement sessions, simple projects were implemented by the participants. The evaluation of projects and student feedback indicate that the four learning objectives, namely: 1) movement as a design material, 2) bodily skills needed for technological implementation, 3) movement qualities, and 4) practical projects, were attained for most of the participants. For some participants, however, the movement qualities were hard concepts to grasp and utilize in design, and this difficulty had an impact on all the other learning objectives. Further experiments with new tools, techniques, contexts, and guidelines are therefore required to highlight the importance of movement qualities in design. © 2017 ACM.

This paper presents a full-scale experiment investigating the use of human motion intensities as input for interactive illumination of a town square in the city of Aalborg in Denmark. As illuminators sixteen 3.5 meter high RGB LED lamps were used. The activity on the square was monitored by three thermal cameras and analysed by computer vision software from which motion intensity maps and peoples trajectories were estimated and used as input to control the interactive illumination. The paper introduces a 2-layered interactive light strategy addressing ambient and effect illumination criteria totally four light scenarios were designed and tested. The result shows that in general people immersed in the street lighting did not notice that the light changed according to their presence or actions, but people watching from the edge of the square noticed the interaction between the illumination and the immersed persons. The experiment also demonstrated that interactive can give significant power savings. In the current experiment there was a difference of 92% between the most and less energy consuming light scenario. © 2012 ACM.

The project workbook as a collection of working papers, which are continuously generated during a product development process, is challenged by the digital media. The purpose of the project workbook is to maintain an overview of the documentation of the design process. For study groups, the mixed media constitutes a communicative challenge in the meeting with supervisors and external parties. Theoretically, all documents could be brought to either a physical or a digital form, so evaluations and reflections could take place in a fluid process. In reality, the hand sketches are produced continuously and partly also the physical 3D sketches while CAD models are only occasionally turned into subjects for comparative evaluations during the development process. This is a problem for the project-oriented learning, because it is based on the production of the repetitive knowledge. Such a fluctuating design process creates design representations in different phases that categorically belong to the same axonometric group, which also raises the question whether the project workbook should in fact be organized according to a design process model or taxonomy. The purpose of this paper is therefore double. Firstly, it aims to identify methods that can bridge the gap of documentation. Secondly, it discusses the pros and cons of the above-mentioned methods for cataloguing design representations. © 2018 Institution of Engineering designers The design Society. All Rights Reserved.

This paper describes the development of a set of electronic music instruments (PHOXES), which are based on physical modeling sound synthesis. The instruments are modular, meaning that they can be combined with each other in various ways in order to create richer systems, challenging both the control and perception, and thereby also the sonic potential of the models. A method for evaluating the PHOXES has been explored in the form of a pre-test where a test subject borrowed the instrument for a period of 10 days. The longer test period makes way for a more nu-anced qualitative evaluation of how such instruments might be integrated into workflows of real world users. ©2010 Steven Gelineck etal.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key tool in reshaping education, particularly in programming courses. This paper presents a case study where second-semester media technology students used GitHub Copilot as a coding tutor throughout their coursework and for a three-day Game-jam, during which they developed 2D mobile games as part of their final exam. Students were encouraged to use Copilot to assist with homework assignments and game development, leading to significantly higher-quality projects compared to previous years. The study explores the impact of AI on student performance, the resulting shift in learning dynamics, and potential recommendations for enhancing curriculum and assessment methods in light of AI integration. This paper discusses the benefits, challenges, and recommendations for integrating AI in non-computer science education, emphasizing its role as a tutor for programming courses. © 2024 IEEE.

We describe a multimodal system which exploits the use of footwear-based interaction in virtual environments. We developed a pair of shoes enhanced with pressure sensors, actuators, and markers. Such shoes control a multichannel surround sound system and drive a physically based sound synthesis engine which simulates the act of walking on different surfaces. We present the system in all its components, and explain its ability to simulate natural interactive walking in virtual environments. The system was used in an experiment whose goal was to assess the ability of subjects to walk blindfolded on a virtual plank. Results show that subjects perform the task slightly better when they are exposed to haptic feedback as opposed to auditory feedback, although no significant differences are measured. The combination of auditory and haptic feedback does not significantly enhances the task performance. © 2011 Stefania Serafin et al.

This paper presents a review of recent developments and future perspectives, addressing the problem of creating a virtual dressing room. First, we review the current state-of-the-art of exiting solutions and discuss their applicability and limitations. We categorize the exiting solutions into three kinds: (1) virtual real-time 2D image/video techniques, where the consumer gets to superimpose the clothes on their real-time video to visualize themselves wearing the clothes. (2) 2D and 3D mannequins, where a web-application uses the body measurements provided by the customer, to superimpose the standard sizes to fit a customized 2D or 3D mannequin before buying. (3) 3D camera and laser technologies which acquire 3D information of the costumer, enabling estimation of the body shape and measurements. Additionally, we conduct user studies to investigate the user behavior when buying clothes and their demands to a virtual dressing room. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper strategies for augmenting the social dimension of collaborative music making, in particular in the form of bodily and situated interaction are presented. Mobile instruments are extended by means of relational descriptors democratically controlled by the group and mapped to sound parameters. A qualitative evaluation approach is described and a user test with participants playing in groups of three conducted. The results of the analysis show corecategories such as familiarity with instrument and situation, shift of focus in activity, family of interactions and different categories of the experience emerging from the interviews. Our evaluation shows the suitability of our approach but also the need for iterating on our design on the basis of the perspectives brought forth by the users. This latter observation confirms the importance of conducting a thorough interview session followed by data analysis on the line of grounded theory. © 2012, Steering Committee of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. Sustainability certification schemes experience growing popularity. Denmark got its own sustainability certification scheme based on the German DGNB certification scheme. Previous work based on four case studies - DGNB certified healthcare centres, suggests further research on how to improve and support the iterative design process in the initial design phases. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to investigate the design process on a more common level experienced by Danish DGNB consultants when designing sustainable buildings using the Danish DGNB certification scheme and thereby possibly verify the findings of previous work, on a more general level. To be able to cover a wide variety of projects and levels of experience with the DGNB scheme, a questionnaire is distributed to Danish DGNB consultants. The survey shows that the design teams to a smaller degree use the DGNB consultant along the design process and particularly so in the early design stages. At the same time, it shows that especially LCA, LCC and acoustical comfort are hardly implemented before the final stages of the design, questioning the holistic nature of the design. The study shows a potential in developing methods and tools to support the initial design phases. Copyright © NCEUB 2017.
