This paper examines the safety of LiDAR-based navigation for driverless vehicles and aims to reduce the risk of extracting information from undesired obstacles. We define the faults of a LiDAR navigation system, derive the integrity risk equation, and suggest landmark environments to reduce the risk of fault-free position error and data association faults. We also present a method to quantify feature extraction risk using reflective tape on desired landmarks to enhance the intensity of returned signals. The high-intensity returns are used in feature extraction decisions between obstacles and pre-defined landmarks using the Neyman-Pearson Lemma. Our experiments demonstrate that the probability of incorrect extraction is below 10 −14 , and the method is sufficient to ensure safety.

In the present paper, the influence of the contact boundary condition and specimen geometry on the concrete compressive strength is numerically investigated by using a version of the Lattice Discrete Element Method (LDEM), implemented on Abaqus/Explicit. More precisely, two types of contact boundary conditions are considered and, for each of them, three different slenderness levels (height/width ratio - h/b) are analyzed (that is, h/b = 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) by considering a square cross-section. Moreover, for h/b = 2.0, a circular cross-section is also examined. Two models are developed: one by using the LDEM and the other by using a hybrid model, combining Finite Elements and LDEs. The results show that both the boundary conditions and the sample geometry influence the axial compressive strength.

Water resources are inevitable for human survival but untreated wastewater harms the environment. Thus, ongoing monitoring of water quality is necessary to identify pollution sources and prevent further damage. For such monitoring, an IoT water quality monitoring system was developed using Arduino technology to collect and transmit data to MQTT Brokers and store it in a database. The data is presented on a monitoring webpage. Three machine learning methods (Random Forest, ANN, and LightGBM) were used for backend analysis and prediction. LightGBM was found to have the highest prediction accuracy for NH3, pH, ORP, and temperature. The research contributes to reducing the need for frequent and costly data collection by using an IoT system for real-time monitoring and employing machine learning predictions to compensate for missing data. This approach provides a more efficient and effective method for analyzing and predicting water quality.
