Flexural-gravity wave interaction with undulating bottom topography in the presence of uniform current: An asymptotic approach

Using an asymptotic method, this article deals with flexural-gravity wave scattering with undulating bottom topography, including the effect of uniform currents. The interest in this problem lies in developing second-order solutions using the Fourier transform, which minimises the error gap between first and second-order solutions. The present method allows the physical processes involved in the sea-bed topography, uniform current, plate-covered surface, and wave interaction to be studied. Specifically, we observe Bragg resonance between the flexural-gravity waves and the bottom ripples, which are associated with the reflection of incident wave energy. We examine the effects of wave current and emphasise how crucial the asymptotic expansion method is to the emergence of the current response. We demonstrate that bottom topography dominates the effects of Bragg resonance for depth Froude numbers valued at 0.8 or less. Further, most reflected wave components have their frequencies shifted by the current, and wave action conservation causes reflected wave energy to be enhanced for following currents. Using the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project spectrum and the discrete Fourier transform, the theory derived in the frequency domain is shown in the time domain to analyse wave propagation through the whole system. © 2024

In this study, we identify the challenges in implementing town development learning using the case of hometown learning we practiced at Koyasan Junior High School. Koyasan is famous as a tourist destination with a World Heritage Site but has been experiencing a population decline in recent years. In collaboration with teachers, we planned a hometown study program targeting the historic city area, including the discovery of the town's charms and issues and proposals for the future, which we implemented through trial and error in actual classes. © 2022 Architectural Institute of Japan. Educational constructivism emphasizes the interaction between the individual and the environment to build knowledge, prioritizing social collaboration and personal reflection. In the San Luis sector of San Isidro Patios, a participatory educational model is proposed to address the lack and consumption of poor-quality water. The methodology, divided into five phases, seeks to optimize the transfer of knowledge through human interaction and the combination of pedagogical *** instructional design follows nine steps, from the definition of problems to the selection of teaching resources, adapting to the student and the community context. Constructivist, cognitivist, and behaviorist approaches are integrated, highlighting situated learning and formative assessment to promote effective and participatory instruction. The workshops focus on acquiring skills to address problems such as the lack of drinking water and inefficient rainwater collection systems in *** objectives, student considerations, content analysis, teaching strategies and objective evaluation are an integral part of the design, which includes learning units and teaching-learning approaches adapted to each type of knowledge. Teaching strategies include communication, group work and practical workshops, with evaluation criteria that consider viability, environmental responsibility, social inclusion, innovation and technical *** educational approach adopted seeks to promote community participation in solving real problems related to water supply and management. The importance of considering the specific characteristics of the target community and the integration of complementary pedagogical models is highlighted. The methodology seeks not only to address the problem of water supply, but also to empower participants through a participatory educational process oriented towards concrete solutions.

Relationship between Embedment and Compressive Properties with Grain Direction of Hardwood Species

In general, softwoods are used as the main structural material for wooden structures, while hardwoods are less used. Some hardwoods show superior mechanical performance due to the high density about 1.0 x 103 kg/m3. Therefore, the utilizing hardwoods as structural materials are supposed to more flexible structural design proposals. Studies on the mechanical performance of hardwoods for structural design are not enough, especially as an embedment performance. In this study, it was conducted embedment and compression tests related to the joint performance of wooden structures using three species of hardwoods (Ulin, Buna, and Kuri) and a softwood (Sugi) to investigate the effects of strength performances such as density and woody structure. As a result, hardwoods with higher density showed higher strength performance. Embedment strength relative to compressive strength was 0.94 to 1.49 times higher in the direction parallel to the grain and 3.46 to 5.08 times higher in the direction perpendicular to the grain. About embedment strength, the ring-porous wood, Kuri, showed a similar trend (TR⨫RT, TL⨫RL) to that of a softwood, Sugi, while the diffuse-porous wood, Ulin and Buna, showed different trends (RTRL). © 2024 Society of Materials Science Japan. Degradation of Tattoo Inks by Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment: A Proof-of-Concept Study

Tattoos have been a part of the culture and a way of expression for a remarkable portion of society throughout history. However, different dissatisfactions related to tattoos lead people to tattoo removal procedures that can be carried out in various ways. Among them, laser tattoo removal is the most common technique. However, laser tattoo removal could have downsides;thus, novel technologies that either support or replace conventional methods are needed. In the present study, the degradation of red, yellow, green, blue, black and white tattoo inks by plasma treatment was evaluated for possible future use of cold plasma in tattoo removal. Tattoo inks were treated with DBD air plasma in the aqueous form and in the agarose gel. Furthermore, also tattoo pigments were exposed to plasma-treated water. The KI-starch reagent was used to correlate the oxidative strength of plasma-treated water with the degradation of tattoo inks. Degradation of tattoo inks was determined by reflectance measurements and was measured as color change with respect to plasma treatment time. Color changes of tattoo inks were represented using the CIELAB color system and CIE xyY color space. Our results suggest that air DBD plasma treatment and plasma-treated water are capable of degrading tattoo inks. The color change of tattoo inks due to degradation by plasma was clearly distinguishable by the naked eye, and the maximum value corresponding to color change was measured for red tattoo ink. © 2022 by Begell House, Inc.

Composite coating technologies used in the aircraft industry are susceptible to hot corrosion damage caused by substandard fuels and harsh environmental conditions. In this context, it is crucial to evaluate the hot corrosion resistance of coating systems and to study the microstructural changes. Recent research has focused on the hot corrosion damage behavior of high entropy alloy (HEAs) coatings in the aircraft industry. In this study, two different HEA coating systems were designed by applying CoNiCrAlY powder, AlCoCrFeNiTi and AlCoCrFeNiZr HEA powders to an Inconel 718 substrate using two thermal spray coating techniques (high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) and atmospheric plasma spray (APS)). Then, in order to investigate the microstructural changes in the coatings, a salt mixture of 45 % Na2SO4 and 55 % V2O5 was placed on the surface of the coatings and subjected to isothermal hot corrosion experiments at 900 °C for 1, 3, 5 and 10 h. Both coating systems exhibited outstanding stability, strength and increased corrosion resistance under high temperature, extremely corrosive conditions, and the damage effect in needle/rod-like hot corrosion was dominated by the formation of Co2VO4 compound as a corrosion product. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Water resources are inevitable for human survival but untreated wastewater harms the environment. Thus, ongoing monitoring of water quality is necessary to identify pollution sources and prevent further damage. For such monitoring, an IoT water quality monitoring system was developed using Arduino technology to collect and transmit data to MQTT Brokers and store it in a database. The data is presented on a monitoring webpage. Three machine learning methods (Random Forest, ANN, and LightGBM) were used for backend analysis and prediction. LightGBM was found to have the highest prediction accuracy for NH3, pH, ORP, and temperature. The research contributes to reducing the need for frequent and costly data collection by using an IoT system for real-time monitoring and employing machine learning predictions to compensate for missing data. This approach provides a more efficient and effective method for analyzing and predicting water quality. © 2023 IEEE.

Recently, researchers in the power system industry have considered the intelligent parking lot idea. The intelligent parking lots (IPL) try to exchange power with the upstream by electric vehicles (EVs) charge/discharge application. The mentioned process of charge/discharge can provide a solution model of regular problems in this field, i.e., peak time problems. Additionally, such vehicles' existence can play an essential role in environmental performance enhancement in power systems. The primary purpose of this paper is to consider such enhancements of EVs in power systems and environmental performance. For this purpose, a multi-objective optimization approach is suggested for the environmental performance and economical operation of IPL by considering the time-of-use rates of a demand response program. Since such a model is associated with various practical bounds, the multi-objective grasshopper optimization algorithm is suggested to solve this problem. The outcomes indicate the effectiveness of the compared techniques utilizing fuzzy decision-making strategies. Chaos theory is employed to increase this method and progress searching operators. Additionally, the proposed multi-objective technique is a model created using fuzzy theory, variable detection, strategy selection-based memory, and non-dominated sorting theory to choose the best Pareto from a list of solutions with robust functionality for resolving the problems mentioned above. The proposed technique is tested on a sample system that includes an intelligent parking lot, local production facilities, and non-renewable and renewable production systems under the proposed uncertainty strategy of upstream grid pricing. The study showed the effectiveness of the suggested method. The simulation findings indicate that the emission rate and overall cost of intelligent parking lots are reduced by 3.87 and 2%. It indicates that economic and environmental objectives are also satisfied due to the successful deployment

Impacts of Local and Global Climate Change on the Thermal Performance of Social Interest Housing in Hot and Humid Climates

Urban planning and changes in the physical-chemical conditions of space resulting from it in the built area affect the energy efficiency and thermal performance of buildings, as guided by energy performance guidelines. The absence of computational simulations that integrate the urban and building scales generates uncertainties in the data. Recent studies highlight differences in results when considering urban configurations. In this work, a methodology was developed for these integrated computational simulations, ensuring precise results regarding potential impact. Softwares Urban Weather Generator (UWG), Climate Change World Weather Generator (CCWWG) and ENVI-met program was used to simulate local and global climate changes, and for use as input in EnergyPlus to simulate thermal performance of a social housing. The results reveal a significant impact of the urban heat islands and global warming on the exterior thermal comfort and building performance, reducing habitability and requiring air conditioning almost all year round, in the future climates. © 2024, The Authors.
