Investigation and kinetic study of TGO growth behavior in high-entropy alloy coating systems

In this study, AlCoCrFeNiTi and AlCoCrFeNiZr high-entropy alloys (HEA) developed for high temperature applications were applied as topcoats of the coating system by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process, while CoNiCrAlY bond coats were coated by high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) technique. As a result of isothermal oxidation tests performed in the range of 1000 °C–1200 °C, both HEA systems were found to be resistant to oxidation. The rate constant (K_p) and activation energy (Q) values obtained at 1200 °C were calculated as 0.1090 μm²/h/224.6 kJ/mol for AlCoCrFeNiTi and 0.1174 μm²/h/230.2 kJ/mol for AlCoCrFeNiZr, respectively. The findings reveal that the growth kinetics and microstructural evolution of the TGO layer directly affect the oxidation-induced degradation behavior of composite coating systems. The findings indicate that oxidation-induced microstructural changes and the growth behavior of the TGO layer are determinants of coating degradation. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Assessing pollution degree and human health risks from hazardous element distribution in soils near gold mines in a Colombian Andean region: Correlation with phytotoxicity biomarkers

The assessment of human health risk due to the presence of hazardous elements in the environment is now necessary for environmental management and legislative initiatives. This study aims to determine the contamination by As, Cd, Pb, and Cr in soils near gold mines in three municipalities located in the Andean region of Colombia. One of the main objectives of the study is to explore possible correlations between the Lifetime Cancer Risk (LCR) and phytotoxicity biomarkers using a simple and rapid-response plant model, radish (Raphanus sativus L.). In the municipality of Yalí, Puerto Berrío, and Buriticá, the hazardous elements concentrations ranged from 8.1 to 35.5, 1.7 to 892, and 5.8 to 49.8 for As, 0.1 to 4.6, 0.1 to 65.2, and 0.5 to 18.2 for Cd, 18.5 to 201.3, 13.0 to 1908, and 189 to 2345 for Pb, and 5.4 to 118.4, 65.4 to 301, and 5.4 to 102.3 for Cr, respectively. The results showed that the biomarkers intracellular H2O2 concentration, antioxidant activity, and radicle elongation exhibited significant (P 0.58) were found between the biomarkers and the LCR for Cd, Pb, and Cr, but not for As. The results using biomarkers reveal that soil pH and organic matter content are important variables that control the bioavailability of these elements in the soil. The use of indicators like LCR alone has limitations and should be accompanied by the use of biomarkers that allow for a better understanding of the biological system's response to exposure to potentially toxic elements. The results obtained show the urgent need to implement public policies to minimize exposure to hazardous substances in areas near gold mining projects. © 2024

3D city models are an important cornerstone in the development of digital twin cities, allowing for various analyses and simulations. CityGML, as an open standard for 3D city models, emphasizes five main aspects: scale or level of detail (LoD), semantics, geometry, topology, and appearance. One of the important elements in CityGML 3D city models is representation of vegetation. Vegetation in CityGML, especially individual trees, is still limited in terms of detail and resolution, reducing its effectiveness for specific applications. This paper proposes a graph-based conceptual model for individual trees that conforms to the CityGML v2.0 specification. The model refers to the morphological structure of a tree consisting of roots, trunk, and crown (including branches, twigs, and leaves), and considers the five main aspects of CityGML. By enhancing semantic information and geometric details, the model aims to provide an information-rich and realistic representation of individual trees in a 3D city environment. The 3D tree model created based on this conceptual model may be applicable in the development of digital twin urban forests and virtual forest simulations that utilize immersive technologies such as the metaverse. This research opens up new opportunities in the development of solitary vegetation objects through CityGML ADE by including more detailed semantic and topological information. © Author(s) 2024.

The objective of this study was to determine the determinants between Community-Based Total Sanitation and the incidence of diarrhea in toddler at communities near rivers. This study used a quantitative approach with cross sectional design. The sample consisted of 76 mothers who have toddler with the sampling technique by accidental sampling. Primary data obtained directly from interviews using questionnaires and direct observation to respondents. The independent variable was Community-Based Total Sanitation which includes the behavior of open defecation, drinking water and food management, household waste management, and household waste water management. The results showed that only household wastewater management was significant with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers (p value 0,0000;OR 5,2), while, open defecation (p value 0.118), drinking water and household food management (p value 1,000), household waste management (p value 0,979) was not related to the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers. Toddlers in households with poor wastewater treatment were 5,2 times more likely to have diarrhea. The conclusion is household wastewater management was significant with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers, so that innovative efforts are needed so that the community improves their waste management. This is useful for preventing the occurrence of diarrhea in toddlers. © 2022

Damage is defined as any change to the material, geometry or boundary condition that can modify the structure’s properties or response. In the past, damage identification was performed through periodical inspection, non-destructive testing/non-destructive evaluation, or visual observation. Structural health monitoring (SHM) has emerged to transition from offline damage identification to near real-time and online damage assessment. Hence, SHM is a damage detection strategy to monitor a structure for a period using a series of continuous measurement devices, which then collect the system’s characteristics and subsequently perform statistical analysis to assess the current circumstances and health of the structure. One of the first steps for the study of SHM is damage detection followed by monitoring. Machine Learning (ML) techniques can be used to develop viable algorithms to make potential predictions. ML algorithms are therefore providing the tools needed to enhance the capabilities of SHM systems and provide intelligent solutions to past challenges. Preliminary studies have reviewed that the extension of ML into SHM has dramatically increased the system’s capabilities, providing innovative solutions to different research challenges. This work conducts a study of the use of ML to identify damage in a beam and discuss the challenge of usage, performance and implementation of each technique. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study analyzed the effectiveness of a vegetation strategy for mitigating heat within a bus stop shelter by implementing vegetation wind permeability and transpiration cooling processes using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. In scenario 1, a pot-type vertical greening system (VGS) without wind permeability had no significant effect on temperature reduction in the bus stop shelter. In contrast, scenario 2, with a mesh VGS allowing wind permeability, resulted in an average temperature reduction of 0.16°C within the interior area of the bus stop shelter, accompanied by shelter improved ventilation. Scenario 3, which entailed the removal of the shelter and the planting of trees, resulted in the least reduction in wind speed and an average temperature reduction of 0.14°C in the bus waiting area. Scenario 2 demonstrated the most effective temperature reduction for interior and surrounding area of the bus stop. Considering the normal effective temperature (NET), Scenario 3 provided the lowest sensation temperature. This indicates that the improved ventilation in Scenario 3 had a substantial impact on NET. Considering the effects of the vegetation strategies proposed in this study, it is essential to select suitable strategies for heat mitigation in bus-stop shelters based on regional and spatial considerations. © 2024, The Authors. Bragg scattering of gravity waves by a sea bed of varying depth in the presence of uniform current covered by a floating membrane

We present an asymptotic approach to solving the water wave scattering by undulating bottom topography in the presence of uniform currents where a flexible membrane covers the upper surface. The interest in this problem lies in the development of asymptotic solutions using the Fourier transform under the action of uniform currents. The method allows the physical processes involved in the sea-bed topography and membrane-covered surface and wave interactions to be studied. In particular, we identify the existence of Bragg resonance between gravity waves and the bottom ripples, which are associated with the reflection of incident wave energy. We consider the impacts of uniform current, and we highlight the central role of the asymptotic expansion method in the evolution of the response of current. For depth Froude number in the range of 0.4-0.7, the effects of bottom topography on Bragg resonance dominate. The current shifts the frequency of the most reflected wave components, and wave action conservation results in amplified reflected wave energies for the following currents. The theory developed in the frequency domain is illustrated in the time domain using discrete Fourier transform with the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project (JONSWAP) spectrum [Hasselmann et al., J. Phys. Oceanogr. 10, 1264 (1980)] to analyze wave propagation through the whole system. © 2024 Author(s).

Biochar from bio-waste pyrolysis presents excellent CO_(2) sequestration *** study innovated the design of cement-bonded particleboards utilizing a substantial amount of 50-70 wt.%pre-soaked biochar to render the products *** investigated the roles of biochar in magnesium oxysulfate cement(MOSC)system and demonstrated good mechanical and functional properties of biochar cement *** the presence of biochar,the amounts of hydration products were enriched in the cement systems as illustrated by the thermogravi-metric analyses(TGA)and X-ray diffraction(XRD).We further incorporated supplementary cementitious materials(SCMs)and generated 5 Mg(OH)_(2)⋅MgSO_(4)·7H_(2)O(5-1-7)phase in the MOSC *** a result,our designs of biochar particleboards satisfied the standard requirements for flexural strength(>5.5 MPa)and thickness swelling(<2%).Moreover,our biochar particleboards presented a low thermal conductivity as the biochar pores disrupted thermal bridging within *** illustrated that the high dosage ratio of biochar could significantly offset the CO_(2) emissions of the particleboards(i.e.,carbon-negative)via life cycle *** economic profits could also be accomplished for the biochar *** instance,the 50BC-MOSC bonded particleboard(with 50 wt.%pre-soaked biochar as aggregate,50 wt.%MOSC as binder)with promising mechanical properties could store 137 kg CO_(2) tonne^(−1) and yield an overall economic profit of 92 to 116 USD m^(−3) depending on the carbon prices in different *** summary,our new designs of carbon-negative biochar particleboards could curtail carbon emissions in the construction materials and promote the realization of carbon neutrality and circular economy.

In the current work, a new error evaluation methodology is introduced based on error analysis in ship production with reverse engineering data. The aim is to determine the errors and prevent or reduce the occurrence in other projects. First step is to compose a database of the errors;then, group the similar errors and calculate the Error Priority Number (EPN) by the evaluation of the predetermined criteria. The radar diagrams, which are suitable for representing a number of parameters having the same variables, were used to present the error groups in a simple way. The error groups were created on the diagram with the scores taken from the specific criteria. With the aid of the radar diagram, valuable information is given by presenting similarities and dissimilarities of these errors with other error groups. After examining the radar diagrams and evaluating the results, the cause and effect diagrams were prepared for these error groups from the field experts. Thus, the methodology should be customized for the shipyard to ensure maximum efficiency. © 2021 Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME)
