Carbonaceous and nitrogenous disinfection by-products potential formation and removal technologies from the water treatment process: A review

Not only at the water treatment process, disinfection is required for the inactivation of pathogen microorganisms in wastewater treatment before it is released to the waterbodies or for recycling purposes. During the disinfection process by chlorination, it found the formation of harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). DBPs formed because of the reaction of inorganic and organic matter as precursors with chlorine/chloramine. The aim of this research is to analyze the potential formation of Carbonaceous Disinfection By-products (C-DBPs) as the most DBPs in the water and Nitrogenous Disinfection By-products (N-DBPs) as the most DBPs of the wastewater. Most DBPs have precursors from natural organic matter (NOM) and the effluent of sewage treatment contributes to increasing the DBPs precursor. The review method start with identifying DBPs precursor, potential formation of DBPs, factor affecting the formation DBPs, and finding the advanced technologies that are appropriate to remove DBPs and their precursors. It found that trihalomethanes (THMs) is the most widely found in water treatment such as chloroform, bromodichloromethane, and bromoform. N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is one of N-DBPs that most presence in polluted water and also haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloacetamides (HAcAms), Nitrosoamine (NAs), cyanogen halides (CNX), halonitromethanes (HNMs), N-nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEA). The result shows that disinfection plays a role of formation DBPs in water and wastewater treatment. DBPs have potential health risks for the human body because they are genotoxic and carcinogenic. Physicochemical treatment can remove the precursor of DBPs and advanced treatment enhances the removal of DBPs.

Increasing typhoon impact and economic losses due to anthropogenic warming in Southeast China

Despite a variety of studies on the tropical cyclone (TC) response to climate change, few of them have examined the projected damages of future TCs. Here we quantify the impact of anthropogenic warming on TC-induced damages in the late twenty-first century along the coasts of Southeast China based on convection-permitting TC simulations and machine-learning-based damage models. We found that if the area's 10 super typhoons between 2013 and 2019 were to occur at the end of the century under the high emissions RCP8.5 scenario, they would have on average a 12% +/- 4% increase in landfall intensity, 25% +/- 23% increase in precipitation, and 128% +/- 70% increase in economic losses, compared to historical simulations. We also found a significant increase in the full risk profile. The estimated typhoon loss with a 50-year return period for Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan (four most typhoon-prone provinces among the seven provinces in the region) would increase by 71%, 170%, 20%, and 85%, respectively, towards the end of the century even under the lower emissions RCP4.5 pathway. Our findings imply the need to design effective local hazard mitigation measures to reduce future typhoon risks.

The difficulty in controlling the proper bonding during manufacturing sandwich for ship structure is a major problem. One of the damage types that often occurs is debonding caused by the lack of the adhesive layer bond between the two faceplate materials and the sandwich core at the centre. Furthermore, the identification of damage in ship structure becomes essential to ensure the structural integrity and security issues. Based on the issues above, damage identification on the sandwich plate of Ferry Ro-Ro with several debonding ratios using the k-NN algorithm was proposed. The cross-validation method was used to check the validity of the proposed algorithm model in practice. The proposed models were analyzed with various k-fold values, k-NN values, and number of iterations to investigate the influence of the those parameters on the accuracy of the model. From the result, it can be found that increasing k-fold value is the best strategy to increase the accuracy of the model. However, increase number of neighbors (k) caused a bias so that the accuracy decreased. The tests resulted in the highest accuracy of 97.60% obtained at k-fold 11 with k=3 and 90 iterations. It can be summarized that the large number of k-folds and small k-NN parameters do not require large iterations to obtain high prediction results.

The research was conducted in the coastal area of Palu Bay, Lere Village. Data were collected using observation, interviews, and literature study techniques. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods and focused on the concept of the design of the tsunami evacuation building on the coast of Palu Bay. Data analysis was carried out to obtain an overview of the problems that occurred at the planning location which was analyzed with the concept of architectural design by considering the existing conditions of the site and the surrounding environment, as well as utilizing the potential of the site so that it has the potential for building functions. The conclusion obtained is based on the results of data analysis, it is necessary to have a building that can function as an evacuation container for the community when a disaster occurs in the coastal area of Palu Bay, thereby reducing the number of casualties. The benefit of this research is that it is a solution for local people to save themselves when the tsunami disaster.

This paper is a report of a comparative naval architecture analysis of United States, Canadian, French, Netherlands, German, British, and Soviet Frigates. The investigation covered general arrangements, weapons and sensors, survivability, intact and damaged stability, manning and personnel support (all of which me discussed in PART I), and hull form, propulsion, speed range, sea keeping, ship size, and future growth capability (to be published in PART II). Weapons and sensors were only addressed in terms of their impact on the weight and volume of the ship. The actual military effectiveness of each Frigate was not assessed.

Tourism Potential in West Beach Coastal Area of Banten Province Based on Land Use Spatial Pattern

The west beach coastal area of Banten province is very productive. Local governments use this area for various development activities, tourism in particular. This study aims to determine the tourism potential of the west coast of Banten Province based on the spatial pattern of land use by local regulations. Thus, the development of coastal tourism can develop in an integrated and sustainable manner. The research methodology used is literature study, interviews, field verification, spatial analysis (Arc-GIS), and policy analysis based on the Banten Province Spatial Plan. Based on policy analysis related to regional spatial planning in Banten Province, there are three strategic tourism areas on the west coast, including; (a) Sumur Beach corridor, (b) Pandeglang West Coast corridor (Carita-Cigeulis), and (c) Serang West Coast Corridor (Anyer-Cinangka). The West Coast Corridor of The criteria for the physical type of beach suitable for tourism activities is wide beaches, not rocky, freshwater, and far from the highway. The west coast corridor area these criteria is the Serang West Coast Corridor (Anyer - Cinangka), precisely at Anyer Beach and Anyer Kidul Beach.

Objective: Initiatives to reduce neighborhood-based health disparities require access to meaningful, timely, and local information regarding health behavior and its determinants. We examined the validity of Twitter as a source of information for neighborhood-level analysis of dietary choices and attitudes. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the "healthiness" quotient and sentiment in food-related tweets at the census tract level, and associated them with neighborhood characteristics and health outcomes. We analyzed keywords driving the differences in food healthiness between the most and least-affluent tracts, and qualitatively analyzed contents of a random sample of tweets. Results: Significant, albeit weak, correlations existed between healthiness and sentiment in food-related tweets and tract-level measures of affluence, disadvantage, race, age, U.S. density, and mortality from conditions associated with obesity. Analyses of keywords driving the differences in food healthiness revealed foods high in saturated fat (eg, pizza, bacon, fries) were mentioned more frequently in less-affluent tracts. Food-related discussion referred to activities (eating, drinking, cooking), locations where food was consumed, and positive (affection, cravings, enjoyment) and negative attitudes (dislike, personal struggles, complaints). Discussion: Tweet-based healthiness scores largely correlated with offline phenomena in the expected directions. Social media offer less resource-intensive data collection methods than traditional surveys do. Twitter may assist in informing local health programs that focus on drivers of food consumption and could inform interventions focused on attitudes and the food environment. Conclusions: Twitter provided weak but significant signals concerning food-related behavior and attitudes at the neighborhood level, suggesting its potential usefulness for informing local health disparity reduction efforts.

Many experts have lately joined the effort to study lightweight materials as an alternative solution in ship construction. However, there are limited references regarding the discussion of the current development of the lightweight material application, specifically in ship structure. The purpose of this article is to offer an overview of the present state of the art and give critical points concerning the design and requirements of sandwich applications in ship constructions. The discussion covers several topics, including the current rules/ standard of developing material issued by classification bodies, various sandwich types with different application areas, and an overview of the structural strength assessment of hybrid sandwich application on various ship structure locations. Some potential scenarios for sandwich constructions in maritime applications are also proposed.

Excessive vibrations on the floor slabs have an impact on the emergence of feelings of anxiety, worrying about the collapse of the building. From the results of visual observations, it was found that there is damage to the floor covering. This strongly indicates that there is a problem of deflection of the slab and/or floor beams, so this study is aimed at identifying the factors causing excessive vibrations on the floor slab, and recommending strategies and techniques for handling them. For this reason, the calculation of the frequency value of the floor plate vibration due to a combination of fixed and temporary loads acting on the building concerned. It was found that the natural fundamental frequency value of the existing slab is less than the standardized value i.e., 7.5 Hz. In addition, from the horizontal and vertical configuration of the building’s structural elements, it is known that the area of the floor slab that experiences excessive vibration is greater than 12 m2 so that the selected form of reinforcement is the addition of a structural column in the middle of the span of the main beam that supports the floor slab. Furthermore, a simulation of the calculation of the stability of the structure after the addition of the column is carried out. The simulation results show that the natural fundamental frequency value becomes greater than 7.5 Hz, i.e., 8,539 Hz. This proves that the excessive vibration on the floor slab is caused by a floor area that is too large so that the addition of a supporting column in the middle of the span of the main beam supporting the floor slab is proven to be able to eliminate excessive vibration.
