This paper presents an integrated approach to Visual SLAM, merging online sequential photometric calibration within a Hybrid direct-indirect visual SLAM (H-SLAM). Photometric calibration helps normalize pixel intensity values under different lighting conditions, and thereby improves the direct component of our H-SLAM. A tangential benefit also results to the indirect component of H-SLAM given that the detected features are more stable across variable lighting conditions. Our proposed photometrically calibrated H-SLAM is tested on several datasets, including the TUM monoVO as well as on a dataset we created. Calibrated H-SLAM outperforms other state of the art direct, indirect, and hybrid Visual SLAM systems in all the experiments. Furthermore, in online SLAM tested at our site, it also significantly outperformed the other SLAM systems.

The efficiency of a website depends on how usable the UI user interface, (UI) is and how well it is structured. The aim of this research was to try and understand the issues with the Arion system. Arion is the student information system used by Auckland University of Technology. We conducted three experimental studies to examine the usability and to improve the user experience of student who use Arion. Three main methods were used namely; survey, open card sorting and situated co-inquiry. The survey was used to inform the study and collect more information about users. The open card sorting used to redesign the navigation menu for the system. Then the Situated co-inquiry used to discover the user's current unexpected or unforeseen ideas, which may be helpful for future research.

The product line engineering approach is a promising concept to identify and manage reuse in a structured and efficient way and is even applied for the development of safety critical embedded systems. Managing the complexity of variability and addressing functional safety at the same time is challenging and is not yet solved. Variability management is an enabler to both establish traceability and making necessary information visible for safety engineers. We identify a set of requirements for such a method and evaluate existing variability management methods. We apply the most promising method to an industrial case and study its suitability for developing safety critical product family members. This study provides positive feedback on the potential of the model-based method PLUS in supporting the development of functional safety critical embedded systems in product lines. As a result of our analysis we suggest potential improvements for it.

Software product line engineering is a widely used approach to plan and manage reuse of software. When safety critical products are developed, achieving functional safety standard compliance must be shown. The requirements stated in the functional safety standards also apply when safety critical products are developed in product lines. Managing functional safety in industrial product lines is challenging and work around solutions are applied in practice. The objective of this research is to collect and review reported research publications focusing on achieving safety in product lines and to identify gaps in todays research. We conduct a systematic mapping study of research publications reported until January 2016. We identify 39 research articles to be included in a list of primary studies and analyze how product lines are documented, which safety-related topics are covered and which evaluation method the studies apply. Generally, we find that the area of how to achieve functional safety in product lines needs more attention. Our study provides an overview on which topics have been discussed until now and which safety-related topics need more attention.

Vibration characteristics analysis is important in the design of multi-span pipeline with different support conditions. In order to analyze the natural frequency and the vibration modal of the multi-span pipeline, a matrix transfer method is proposed in this paper. With the multi-span pipeline divided into single-span pipes, the transmission formulas for the deflection, angle, bending and shear between two adjacent spans are deduced, in combination with the Krylov function solution of the free vibration equation for the single-span pipe, and the constraint condition between the two adjacent spans of the multi-span pipeline. According to the boundary conditions on the starting and ending spans, the natural frequency equation and the vibration modal function between two adjacent spans of the multi-span pipeline are presented. The FORTRAN program based on the above principle is written, and the natural vibration frequencies and the vibration modals of two typical multi-span pipelines are investigated and compared with the results from ABAQUS. It is shown that the model presented in this paper is efficient in the analysis of multi-span pipeline and has the advantages of high computational efficiency and convenience for engineering practice application.
