Developing safety critical products demands a clear safety argumentation for each product in spite of whether it has been derived from a product line or not. The functional safety standards do not explain how to develop safety critical products in product lines, and the product line concept is lacking specific approaches to develop safety critical products. Nonetheless, product lines are well-established concepts even in companies developing safety critical products. In this paper we present the results of an exploratory study interviewing 15 practitioners from 6 different companies. We identify typical challenges and approaches from industry and discuss their suitability. The challenges and approaches brought out by this study help us to identify and enhance applicable methods from the product line engineering domain that can meet the challenges in the safety critical domain as well.

We focused on the need for the phosphorus removal in water plant process. As for surface water plant, the enhancement of phosphorus removal in purification process can raise the biological stability of effluent potable water. This study conducted the effect of two water treatment processes for phosphorus removal, including the PAC + AAL (the treatment process using poly aluminum chloride and activated aluminum oxide) and PFS + AAL (the treatment process using poly ferric sulfate and activated aluminum oxide). The aim is to use the adsorption capacity of activated aluminum oxide to increase the removal of phosphorus in filtration process. The result showed that the two processes both can remove the phosphorus concentration to reach below 10 μg/L, and the PAC + AAL is the better process.

Electronic systems in the automotive domain implement safety critical functionality in vehicles and the safety certification process according to a functional safety standard is time consuming and a big part of the expenses of a development project. We describe the functional safety certification of electronic automotive systems by presenting a use case from the construction equipment industry. In this context, we highlight some of the major challenges we foresee, while using a product line approach to achieve efficient functional safety certification of vehicle variants. We further elaborate on the impact of functional safety certification when applying the component-based approach on developing safety critical product variants and discuss the implications by cost modeling and analysis.

The coordination of a team of distributed air vehicles requires a complex optimization, balancing limited communication bandwidths, non-instantaneous planning times and network delays, while at the same time trying to allocate limited resources to spatially diverse locations in a near-optimal fashion in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Given that, in this environment, the optimality of a given plan will not last very long when the information state is constantly changing and being updated, a new approach is proposed in this paper. Global-scope plans for the team are generated and distributed using the principle of emergent leadership to provide efficient plan generation and execution with minimal performance degradation compared to a centralized controller under delayed communications. This type of protocol is labeled the Decentralized Control Global Optimization (DCGO) protocol, and is discussed in this paper, along with some simulation results showing that this premise can produce good results in a realistic environment.

Smart spaces provide enhanced user experience through sensing and adaptation to changing context. Hence, they allow distributed applications to show intelligent, autonomous and interactive behavior. Two important research topics within this field are machine learning and human-system interaction. This paper introduces a pilot smart space implementation on top of a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN) infrastructure that is specifically intended to investigate these two aspects. We investigate a scenario built around an office breakout area context. We describe the infrastructure setup, the novel user interfaces, the network architecture and the message exchange policies of the pilot implementation. We employ the opportunities of modern lighting systems in the proposed implementation.
