The article presents an interview with video artist and art theoretician Paul Ryan. He chronicles the events that led to his working with artist Marshall McLuhan at Fordham University during the 1960s. He discusses his efforts to get the New York State Council on the Arts to increase grant funding for video as an art form in the 1970s. He also comments on his work within the cybernetic art movement.

CUDA has become a very popular programming paradigm in parallel computing area. However, very little work has been done for characterizing CUDA kernels. In this work, we measure the thread level performance, collect the basic block level characteristics, and glean the instruction level properties for about 35 programs from CUDA SDK, Parboil, and Rodinia benchmark suites. In addition, we define basic block vectors, synchronization vectors and thread similarity matrix to capture the characteristics of CUDA programs efficiently. We find that CUDA programs have some unique characteristics at each level compared to sequential programs.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center (E-Defense), which belongs to National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Japan. E-Defense facilitates the world's largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses the parallel EF-analysis software package called ADVENTURECluster (ADVC) as a platform, and we carried out elastoplastic seismic response analysis of high-rise building frame with over 70-million DOFs. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of dynamic collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame. The whole frame is discretized into hexahedral elements with linear interpolation functions. In order to improve the accuracy of collapse simulation, a new piecewise linear combined isotropic and kinematic hardening rule is implemented for steel material, and its parameters are identified from the uniaxial material test result. The stud bolts are precisely modeled using multipoint constraints and nonlinear springs. The wire-meshes in the concrete slab are modeled using hexahedral elements. The damping due to plastic energy dissipation of exterior walls is modeled by shear springs between the floors. The accuracy of the model is verified in comparison to the physical test of steel-concrete composite beam subjected to static deformation. It will be shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses of the 4-story frame can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro-models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

Due to advancements in lighting technologies new opportunities for application emerge. In this paper an interdisciplinary study towards the development of adaptive lighting environments is presented. An implementation of an adaptive lighting environment is made in the domain of office work. For evaluation, experts from the domains of human-system interaction, activity and context recognition, and systemarchitecturedesign are interviewed. Contributions are made with regard to the implementation of the adaptive lighting in office environments and an evaluation method that is in line with the interdisciplinary approach. From the evaluation method insights in the fields of human-computer interaction, activity and context recognition and systemarchitecture and (wireless) networking and in topics that span across these fields are gained.

This paper is to develop an ontology-based mobile environment for collaborative product design and manufacture, which enables geographically dispersed team members to collaborate over the internet within the total design or manufacturing process, including product design specification, conceptual design, detail design, manufacture and recycling. In this paper, a database which based on a new method named ontology is built up to demonstrate the all related information in order to achieve an efficient and convenient management. According these two achievements, a new data management system is built and tested in the mobile device and compared to the traditional data management system at the end of this paper.

Already established driver assistance systems like Cruise Control or Adaptive Cruise Control are based on the delegation of a part of the driving task to the system. Instead of keeping a suitable speed the driver is just monitoring the correct function of the assistance system. In situations when the system is fulfilling the task in a way the driver doesn't accept she/he has to deactivate it. Adding a new input element the driver gains the possibility to create additional inputs in terms of acceleration or deceleration to the assistance system. This allows the driver to modify the system behavior in different driving situation without deactivating the system. The relationship between driver and system shifts from "delegation" to "co-operation". This paper presents the results of a study regarding the first contact of subjects with an enhanced Adaptive Cruise Control and the impacts on the mental model of these drivers.
