In the bored precast pile construction method, precast concrete pile or steel pipe pile is used, and small sized piles also apply to this method. The objective of this study is to develop an effective pile end shape for a small-diameter steel pipe pile, which can work even if the stiffness of the cement paste around the pile tip would be insufficient. Laboratory experiment for static axial compressive load test of single pile in which the tip was covered with plaster was performed. The end resistance was larger than that of a bared pile, but when the displacement progressed, the resistance decreased because of destruction of the root part. The behavior of the end resistance and relationship of the strength of the root part were discussed, and a simplified calculation method was proposed. © 2019 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Chiller model is a key factor to building energy simulation and chiller performance *** spread of new types of electric water chillers that have higher performance and wider operating range,new challenges have been faced by building energy simulation tools and their chiller *** work takes a new type of electric water chiller as a case study and reevaluates eight typical empirically based models for predicting the energy performance of electric water chiller to verify whether they are suitable for the new type of chiller,using both laboratory test data from chiller manufacturer and online monitoring data from on-site operation of a central cooling plant with chillers of the same *** prediction ability of the chiller models(including model prediction accuracy and generation ability)in laboratory test and on-site operation situations are *** results show that the existing models can well describe the chiller performance in the laboratory test situation but perform poorly in the on-site operation *** the best two models in the laboratory dataset,the overall prediction errors of DOE-2 and GN model increase more than 250%and 75%respectively in the field *** big discrepancy of model prediction accuracy in the two situations is mainly due to the differences of evaporator and condenser water flow rates between the laboratory and on-site operation datasets,which indicates the limitations of the empirical chiller models and implies further research in future in order to improve the suitability and reliability of chiller model.

Encephalogram (EEG) devices are one of the active research areas in human-computer interaction (HCI). They provide a unique brain-machine interface (BMI) for interacting with a growing number of applications. EEG devices interface with computational systems requiring access control. These controls rely on a number of authenticators, including “what you know”, “what you have”, and “what you are”. The “what you are” authenticator, formally known as a biometrics authenticator, is increasingly gaining acceptance. An emerging approach in physiological biometrics is cognitive biometrics, which measures brain's response to stimuli. These stimuli can be measured by a number of devices, including EEG systems. This work shows an approach to authenticate users interacting with their computational devices through the use of EEG devices. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using a unique hard-to-forge trait as an absolute biometrics authenticator by exploiting the signals generated by different areas of the brain when exposed to visual stimuli. The outcome of this research highlights the importance of the prefrontal cortex and temporal lobes to capture unique responses to images that trigger emotional responses. Additionally, the utilization of logarithmic band power processing combined with LDA as the machine learning algorithm provides higher accuracy when compared against common spatial patterns or windowed means processing in combination with GMM and SVM machine learning algorithms.

Climate change is getting more and more serious issue in the world. This is known as caused by the increase of carbon dioxide. To stop the increase, many countries agreed to the Paris Agreement in 2015. When to discuss the climate change, temperature drop and increase are focused more often. The big change of the temperature, especially the rise of the temperature, causes the more usage of air conditioning system, and it also causes more energy consumption. In addition, the usage of the air conditioning system is affected by both indoor and outdoor thermal environment. The temperature setting of air conditioning system tends to be lower in the countries situated in tropical region than the countries in the other region. This happens because the thermal sensation of human is easily affected by the outdoor environment. For that reason, to grasp the tendency of thermal sensation in outdoor space is important. In addition, the tendency of short time residence is necessary to wipe out the influence of the thermal environment adjustment by long time living. For that reason, this research targeted the thermal evaluation tendency of short time residents in Bangkok and carried out subject experiments in outdoor spaces to develop landscape design method. As the result of analysis, a different tendency was grasped at one of the measuring points with open sky. © 2018 Web Portal IOP. All rights reserved.

Investigation on crack propagation of SiCf/SiC composite via PF-CZM method

SiCf/SiC composite materials had become a research hotspot in the fields of aerospace materials and nuclear materials in recent years. This materials have high strength, radiation resistance, high temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. However, SiC is a typical brittle material prone to being damaged due to stress concentration in some cases, leading to cracks and even component failure. Therefore, this study employed an accurate and efficient numerical simulation method, phase field cohesive zone method (PFCZM), to investigate the microscopic damage behavior of SiCf/SiC composite materials. This study aimed to illustrate the influence of the thickness of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interface layer on the failure behavior of SiCf/SiC composite materials. Firstly, this study conducted relevant verification of PFCZM. Secondly, numerical simulations of crack initiation, crack propagation, and final damage were performed by establishing a representative volume element (RVE). Observing the simulation results, it was noted that at low strain, when PyC was thicker, the SiCf/SiC composite materials exhibited slight damage to both the SiC matrix and PyC interface. Conversely, when PyC was thinner, the SiCf/SiC composite materials displayed only slight damage to PyC interface. As the PyC thickness increases, the damage to PyC interface decreases, while the damage to SiC becomes more prominent. Simultaneously, a competitive relationship in the damage behavior of SiCf/SiC composite materials can be found after the SiC matrix has cracked: When PyC is thinner, the damage primarily manifests as interlayer delamination between the SiC matrix and the SiC fiber. Conversely, when PyC is thicker, it manifests in PyC failure. Finally, this study concluded that, in this investigation, a PyC interface layer with a thickness of 0.1 μm exhibited the most effective protective effect on SiCf/SiC composite material. © 2024 Xi'an Jiaotong University

Large amount pollutants settle and accumulate in storm sewer when cleanout is not in time or available. Those sediments will re-suspend and discharge to receiving waters in wet weather. Contaminations in sewer stormwater come from both catchment and sewer. Discharge law of different source pollutants is analyzed in theory and with experimental results. Pollutant discharge law from catchment accords with exponential washoff model, but sediment pollutants in sewer fit rating curve washoff model well. Analysis shows that the more the sediments is, the weaker the first flush effects will be. It is better to control diffused pollution on sit (source control), for those stormwater quality facilities run with high efficiency as they are based on capture and treating first part of runoff. It is also important to intensify clean and maintenance of storm sewer system to avoid sediment and accumulation of contaminations. © 2011 IEEE.

Ships and offshore structures often encounter irregular waves in the ocean. Therefore, the simulation of irregular waves is very necessary and meaningful. The potential flow method is often used to simulate the irregular waves because the evolution needs a long time and a large amount of calculation. High order spectral (HOS) method is a kind of potential flow method, which has the advantages of high efficiency. In this paper, the HOS method is used to simulate the formation and evolution of irregular waves. Firstly, the governing equations, boundary conditions and the solving procedure of the HOS-ocean model based on the HOS method are introduced. Then the accuracy and stability of the HOS-ocean model are verified by a standard example. After that, the formation and evolution of two-dimensional and three-dimensional irregular waves are simulated based on JONSWAP spectrum and ITTC spectrum respectively. The frequency domain curves, time domain curves, maximum wave height, maximum wave steepness, average wave steepness and other parameters of the waves generated by the two wave spectrums are compared, and the differences between the two wave spectrums in generating irregular waves are analyzed. © 2022 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

In recent years, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) becomes one of the most suitable solutions to fulfil world primary eco-friendly energy demand. Consequently, bunkering ship is designed to charge liquefied gas with the increasing need for natural gas. Due to the extremely dangerous and cryogenic cargo, the design of LNG bunkering ship requires very high-level structural design/analysis technologies rather than conventional ships. Therefore, this paper describes a general procedure of the structural safety assessment for the independent type C tank of LNG bunkering ship. It aims to present a complete procedure for strength evaluation of independent type C tank including hull strength assessment. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

He received his B.S. degree in naval architecture from the University of Michigan in 1970. In 1972 he was selected for the NAVSEC Hull Division's Long Term Training Program at the University of Michigan and received his M. S. E. degree in naval architecture in 1973. Additionally he has done graduate work in computer science at The Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Carlson began his career with the Naval Ship Engineering Center in 1970 where he worked in the Ship Arrangements Branch. While in ship arrangements he was task leader for the PGG PCG PHM and MCM ship designs. In addition he was project engineer for shipboard stowage ship space classification system and ship standard nomenclature. He was technical manager of the CASDAC arrangement subsystem and the CASDAC hull design system. In 1982 he joined what is now the Computer Aided Engineering Division. Currently he is the manager for the computer supported design version XX system. Besides ASNE which he joined in 1972 he is a member of SNA ME and the U.S. Naval Institute. Howard Fireman:is a naval architect in the Ship Arrangements Design Division (SEA-55W1). He received his B. S. E. degree in naval architecture from the University of Michigan in 1979. In 1983 he was selected for NavSea's Long Term Training Program at the University of Michigan and received his M. S. E. degree in naval architecture with a specialization in ship production and computer aided ship design in 1985. Mr. Fireman began his career with the Naval Ship Engineering Center in 1977 as an engineering cooperative student. Since graduating from the NavSea EIT program he has worked in the Ship Arrangements Design Division. He was task leader for the AOE-6 AE-36 T-AH ARS-SO and SWATH T-AGOS ship designs. He is technical manager of the CSD General Arrangement Design System and is currently the Hull Group CSD coordinator. Besides ASNE which he joined in 1979 he is a member of SNA ME ASE a

The ever increasing complexity of ships coupled with cost, schedule, and resource constraints require innovative methods by the Naval Sea systems Command's ship design community to meet this challenge. This paper describes the effort by the NavSea Ship Arrangement design Division to dramatically improve its ship design capability by the use of a system of computer-based design tools called the General Arrangement design system. The General Arrangement design system (GADS) is based on the engineering requirements of the ship arrangement design process. GADS is currently being used as a production engineering tool. This paper is organized into two parts. Part I describes the General Arrangement design system, and Part II describes the general arrangement design methodology.

Column-to-beam connections are important to evaluate the seismic performance of traditional wooden buildings accurately. However, there are many types of traditional joints. Some of them have not been studied for evaluating their seismic performance, such that almost no experimental data and no evaluation methods are available. This study aims to evaluate the tensile performance of column-to-beam connections with Sao-shachi joint based on the full-scale tests. It is shown that the evaluation formula for the column-to-beam connections with Yatoi-saoshachi joint in the past is applicable to evaluate the tensile performance of these connections. © 2023 Architectural Institute of Japan.
