This paper describes a situation assessment system for an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). This system is a result of research on knowledge-based guidance systems applied to AUVs, which is currently taking place at the Marine system Engineering Laboratory, University of New Hampshire. This paper gives the reader some background on the project, an introduction to the MSEL KBS architecture, and a description of how the situation assessment system is implemented. In a dynamic world with a complex mission, a mobile robot needs the ability to analyze its environment and its situation. We call this situation assessment. Since unplanned situations will most likely occur, the robot will need some ability to perform qualitative reasoning on its situation, before it modifies its original plan. This qualitative reasoning implies a system capable of building and maintaining a model of the vehicle's environment and itself. It also involves use of data from several different sources (sensor fusion) and combining these data into more abstract terms.

In this paper a programmable Forward Error Correction (FEC) IP for a DVB-S2 receiver is presented. It is composed of a Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC), a Bose-Chaudhuri-Hoquenghem (BCH) decoder, and pre- and postprocessing units. Special emphasis is put on LDPC decoding, since it accounts for the most complexity of the IP core by far. We propose a highly efficient LDPC decoder which applies Gauss-Seidel decoding. In contrast to previous publications, we show in detail how to solve the well known problem of superpositions of permutation matrices. The enhanced convergence speed of Gauss-Seidel decoding is used to reduce area and power consumption. Furthermore, we propose a modified version of the lambda-Min algorithm which allows to further decrease the memory requirements of the decoder by compressing the extrinsic information. Compared to the latest published DVB-S2 LDPC decoders, we could reduce the clock frequency by 40% and the memory consumption by 16%, yielding large energy and area savings while offering the same throughput.

The automotive industry is currently undergoing a change in the development philosophy from component-oriented towards function-oriented Model-Based systems Engineering (MBSE). This originates in upcoming, disrupting trends where cars are transforming to digital, connected systems. The interconnected relationships in the vehicle system and the company organization will not be manageable with today's development methods. MBSE requires a sophisticated methodology, like the RFLP-framework suggests. Fundamental to MBSE is the architecture aspect of the system. Such architecture is represented with a system model and offers different architecture views (FLP), for specific concerns. Especially the differentiation between logical (L) and physical (P) perspective is rather uncommon, no standard understanding can be identified. This contribution compares existing understandings of L and P architecture views and derives a detailed definition. As L and P are consecutive architecture views and strongly dependent on each other, the transition and specification process of those is elaborated as well. Thereby the so called architecture node is introduced, offering a methodical support to transform L into P architecture. In conclusion, the relevance of P-decisions in the RFLP-framework is to be emphasized.

With rapid growth in the interconnectivity and interdependency among systems to deliver diverse set of capabilities, the challenge of architecting such system of systems is becoming more complex, more so with the rapid evolution of technologies. To ease the involved complexity and challenges of system of systems Engineering (SoSE), this paper summarizes the proposed approach and methodology for conducting architecture analysis of system of systems (SoS) for resilience, and for assessing the SoS architectures qualitatively and quantitatively for the maturity level of resilience, using Model Based systems Engineering (MBSE) as a support. The approach has been arrived at based on a taxonomy of principles that enable resilience in an architecture. Unified architecture Framework (UAF) is used as a reference for defining the architecture principles, which can be utilized for defining the architecture in MBSE. The Search and Rescue sample model of SoS in UAF Plugin of Cameo systems Modeler has been both augmented and assessed using the proposed methodology and architecture principles.

Environmental performance assessment tool for municipalities (CASBEE-City) has been developed and upgraded since 2008. The tool automatically queries the database and extracts the necessary data for conducting the nationwide municipality assessment. The tool also incorporates GIS functionality and enables tool users to understand the conditions, strengths, and weaknesses of their municipalities in comparison with other municipalities in Japan by visualizing the assessment results on easy-to-understand maps.
