Ensuring the safety of human workers collaborating with industrial robots is paramount. This research work presents a novel approach by developing a safety-related intruder detection system for the operational zones of industrial robots, following the IEC 61508 standard and adopting the related redundant architecture. The hardware integrates light curtains and radar sensors in a dual-layer configuration, while the software utilizes a safety system-on-chip to implement real-time diagnostics and fault tolerance. Protecting employees and ensuring a smooth and safe work environment are significant concerns for all companies. As a result, numerous standards and regulations have been established to provide safe collaboration between humans and machines. However, despite these measures, accidents continue to occur, resulting in varying degrees of injuries. The proposed system is depicted through a comprehensive schematic, emphasizing the integration of safety measures within the robotic environment. The detailed prototype demonstrates practical application, show-casing the system's ability to detect intrusions, initiate emergency responses, and transition to fail-safe states during component failures. This research work advances safety protocols in human-robot collaboration within industrial settings, fostering a safe working environment through a well-defined safety framework. © 2025 IEEE.

For decades, speed sensors based on the spatial frequency filter method have successfully proven themselves in a wide range of applications. This makes the sensor concept particularly suitable for the area of functional safety. New filter variants extend the previous measuring range to very low speeds up to standstill detection. By combining the sensor with a safety system on chip for recording and analysing measured values, a functionally safe measuring chain can be established. In order to demonstrate the variability and performance of the new filters, an optical application-specific integrated circuit was designed, which forms the basis for further extensive tests. The core components are a large number of freely configurable photodiode channels, which were realised via a redundant structure, as well as two different transimpedance amplifier concepts. In the further course of the project, the ASIC will be analysed with regard to its desired performance parameters and its robustness.

A theoretical approach to a safety-based predictive adaptation of wireless communication channel parameters in harsh environments

This paper presents an approach to a real-time optimization of safety parameters in wireless communication systems. When considering the GEC–model (Generalized Erasure Channel) and the black channel design of a communication channel, then the PFH (Probability of Failure per Hour) value can be estimated using the parameters ε – BER (bit-error-rate), φ – BLR (bit-loss-rate), v – number of safety related messages per second, n – message length and d_min – minimum distance of a linear code. The number of safety related messages per second v and the message length n, including the information block k and the checksum block r, can be varying between the permissible bounds. Accordingly, the variable parameters can be adjusted at run-time with additional assimilation of the used cyclic code. It allows the real-time prediction and optimization of the safety parameters. In this paper, the concept of the parameter estimation is discussed and based on it the optimization problem is defined. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

This paper presents an automated code generation and validation, verification approach to convert model based developments into IEC 61131-3 conform function blocks. IEC 61131-3 programming languages are supported by PLC manufacturers and software environment developers and provide the possibility that novel and intelligent algorithms can be directly operated on industrial accepted systems. Railway and transportation also receive drastic changes from purely hardware based systems to microcontroller + software driven systems. However, the conversion has to follow certain steps to ensure that the adaptation is done correctly and functionality is not alternated, added or deleted. Concepts suggested by different international standards such as the IEC 61508 can help to derive a tool chain to verify the generated code. © IFAC.

This particular essay expounds upon how one can foresee and predict software reliability. There are two major components that exist within a computer system: hardware and software. The reliabilities between the two are comparable because both are stochastic processes, which can be described by probability distributions. With this said, software reliability is the probability that will function without failure in a given software and in a given environment during a specified period of time. Thus, this is why software reliability is a major and key factor in software developmental processes and quality. However, one can spot the difference between software reliability and hardware reliability where it concerns the quality duration and the fact that software reliability does not decrease its reliability over time. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

Safety-related systems mostly comprise hardware and software solutions. Due to the increasing application of complex hardware and software systems, the software systems have to be considered regarding safety as well as hardware systems. The development of a safety-related software system is similar to the development of a safety-related hardware systems. But there are still no generally accepted methods for developing safety-critical software. One has to use the methods, which fit best to the actual requirements. In this paper, the optimization of safety parameters for a communication channel with the required safety integrity level (SIL) 3 at runtime is investigated. In order to guarantee the safe communication additional measures are needed. One of them is the black channel principle. It allows the transfer of safety related packets over the safety layer parallel to safety irrelevant data. Another method is the protection by a linear code, typically by cyclic redundancy check (CRC). In terms of the safety level, the information channel can be assumed as a generalized erasure channel (GEC) with the set of output symbols (0, e, 1). For this channel a formula for probability of failure per hour (PFH) can be derived using the parameters: bit error ratio, bit loss rate, message rate, code block length and weight spectrum. Within the safety layer, the communication occurs in the send-/receive-response principle (cyclic mode) and the messages can have a length defined by bounds on nmin and nmax. Accordingly, the optimization problem is formulated to minimize the PFH value by optimizing the message length for changing parameter values. © 2019 European Safety and Reliability Association.
