Wireless communication modeling for safety related systems

This paper deals with the modeling of wireless communication for safety related systems. To achieve safe wireless communication for safety related systems, the wireless channel is modeled by taking into account both bit errors and erasures (loss of information) that occur during wireless transmission of the information. To reduce the bit errors and to detect the erasures, a coding method for transmitting the code word is suggested in this paper. With this coding method, parameters such as bit error, probability of undetected error are reduced and the bit erasures that occur due to fast fading and channel losses are detected confidently. The safety methods as defined according to the European standard EN 50159-2 are taken into consideration and their implementation to achieve safe wireless communication for safety related systems is explained in this paper. The mathematical derivations to calculate the probability of failures per hour (PFH) values for wireless communication with the suggested coding method are derived. With the derived PFH equation, safety integrity level (SIL) achieved for a particular wireless technology can be determined. Finally, the SIL levels achieved for Bluetooth technology are shown. © 2014 North Atlantic University Union. All rights reserved.

The mechanical force imparted by industrial robots is enormous and can lead to dangerous situations for human workers and property if they malfunction. system designs based on the redundancy concept are essential to avoid or mitigate the resulting risk, which is recommended by the various safety standards. In this paper, a 1oo2D based safety SoC that provides multiple Ethernet communication interfaces is presented. Two different design approaches are implemented using the in-house FPGA development board based on the LEON3 soft processor. The software algorithms for each approach are developed and verified.

This paper presents a new tuning method based on model parameters identified in closed-loop. For classical controllers such as PI(D) controllers a large number of simple tuning methods for various application areas exist. However, when it comes to designing a generalised predictive controller (GPC) four parameters have to be specified. To choose those parameters is not a trivial task since they are not directly related to control or regulation performance. The presented tuning method exploits model-parameters to select suitable controller parameters. Additionally, a Rhinehart filter is incorporated in the design to decrease the impact of noise, therefore, a fifth parameter has to be optimised. The proposed method has been tested in simulation and on a real system.

The standard IEC/EN61508 provides the developer with guidelines to develop and implement safety related systems according to the international standard. The standard supplies qualitative and quantitative criteria to evaluated safety related systems, in order to apply it in safety critical applications. This paper details the criterion Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD). This paper derives the necessary equations and calculates the PFD-values for different system architectures. © 2007 IEEE.

Epilepsy is a medical problem that tackles lots of patients. It limits the life activity of such patients due to the seizures that occur anytime and anywhere. Thus, creating a monitoring system that could make their life easier and allow them to perform daily life activities as safe as possible has been studied. This paper is a continuity for a project where a system monitors epileptic patients using a set of wearable sensors connected to several processing units, the main sensors are Electroencephalogram (EEG) for the electrical activity of the brain, electrocardiogram (ECG) for the electrical activity of the heart, and accelerometers to monitor the posture of the patient, features extracted from EEG and ECG signals are used for prediction/detection of seizures. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present a comparative study in order to choose the appropriate classification method for seizure prediction and detection. Five classification methods were studied: Decision Trees, Discriminant Analysis, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Ensemble Learning. For each of the classification methods, the accuracy, the specificity, the sensitivity, the precision, the false detection rate and the Fmeasure were studied and compared. The results for seizure prediction system show that the highest accuracy, specificity and F-Measure, and lowest false detection rate were achieved with Bagged Trees Ensemble Learning, the highest sensitivity and precision were achieved with Quadratic Support Vector Machine. However, for seizure detection system, the highest accuracy and F-Measure were achieved with Linear Support Vector, the highest sensitivity and specificity were achieved with Fine Gaussian Support Vector Machine, and the highest precision and lowest false detection rate were achieved with Subspace Discriminant Ensemble Learning. © 2020 IEEE.

Explorative research is a vital part of biological sciences. Biologists frequently have to examine and compare multiple (large) sets of biological data in an interactive and explorative manner. Exploring alternative ways of examining the data and managing the necessary resources often require substantial (manual) effort and time. In this paper, we present a concrete example of how VLAM, a grid-based workflow management system, can enhance experimentation. We discuss in detail the process of developing the SigWin-detector, an application in the domain of bioinformatics. We show that SigWin-detector can promptly identify regions of increased gene expression in transcriptome maps and periodicity in weather data. We also show that the workflow can be extended or partially modified. The individual modules can also be used to compose different experiments. SigWin-detector fulfills the requirements of interactive and explorative experimentation. ©2006 IEEE.

We simulate time harmonic flows by the lattice Boltzmann method. We propose a general scheme to choose simulation parameters, under the constraints of fixed Reynolds and Womersley numbers, and with a specified simulation error. Under these constraints parameters are chosen to minimize the execution time. Numerical stability is studied in a range of Reynolds and Womersley numbers. As an example of time harmonic flow simulations, results of blood flow in a human abdominal aorta are presented.

Heterogeneous redundant series-parallel systems allow the mixing of components within the same subsystem. This diversity feature may improve the overall characteristics of the system compared with the homogeneous case in term of less susceptibility against so called common-cause failures and reduced cost. That means they guarantee longer availability and are quite suitable for systems that are designed to perform continuous processes. But the main challenging task is to determine the optimal design that corresponds to the minimal investment costs and satisfies the predefined constraints. This kind of combinatorial optimization tasks is perfectly solved using heuristic methods, since those approaches showed stability, powerfulness, and computing effectiveness in solving such matters. This task is more complex than the homogeneous case since the search space is getting larger due to the fact that every component available and that can be deployed in a subsystem has to be taken into account. This fact leads definitely to greater chromosome length and makes the search more time consuming. The algorithm has been implemented in Matlab and three different existing models (Levitin, Lisnianski, and Ouzineb) have been considered for a comparison with the homogeneous case and for validation purposes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Independent mobility is an important feature of an individual's normal life and with the elderly population continually growing, assistive devices such as walkers and canes provide help and guidance to users. Freezing of Gait (FoG) is an episodic phenomenon that is a common symptom of an age-related disease known as Parkinson Disease (PD). This paper is headed toward implementing a detection, diagnosis and correction system for FoG episodes. The proposed cane will generate visual, auditory and tactile cues to help patients overcome this problem, therefore reducing fall risks. In addition, a vibrating calf cuff will be attached to the calf for muscle stimulation. A compatible android phone application is designed to display heart rate measurements of the patient as well as his exact location in case of fall detection. The system is considered to be an electrically safe, portable, comfortable and a low-cost device. The performance of this system is analyzed thoroughly and the accuracy of all methodologies is considered carefully and evaluated. The results have shown no faulty errors and good accuracy and detection percentages. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper deals with the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) problem. The main objective is to limit it by controlling the main reasons that may lead to it. Sudden infant death syndrome is the death without specific reason of a healthy newborn, usually during sleep. Although the causes are unknown, SIDS may be related to abnormalities in the infant's brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep. Researchers have identified several measures that increase the risk on their babies. Thus, this paper proposes a low cost system that may help in monitoring the baby vital signs responsible for the SIDS and sending notifications to parents when abnormalities are encountered. The system is based on a microcontroller that regroups all sensors' outputs and a mobile application that displays these values, controls the video coming from a camera and send notifications in case of abnormal signals. The system was tested over 10 newborns (between 1 month and 2 years) over 3 weeks and the alarms were going well. © 2017 IEEE.
