For many in the field of HCI, location and space are synonymous;yet, as we move from the mobile era to the ubiquitous era, computing becomes entangled with notions of space. This workshop critically examines the role of space in human-computer interfaces. The objective is to bring together diverse perspectives of space, drawing from architecture, philosophy, art, geography, design, dance, spatial-cognition, mathematics, computing, and still other domains, towards foregrounding space in theoretical discussions and explorations within the CHI community. Expected outcomes are the reporting of fresh insights into the impact and role of space in the interaction process.

Scalable video coding is a recent extension of the advanced video coding H.264/AVC standard developed jointly by ISO/IEC and ITU-T, which allows adapting the bitstream easily by dropping parts of it named layers. This adaptation makes it possible for a single bitstream to meet the requirements for reliable delivery of video to diverse clients over heterogeneous networks using temporal, spatial or quality scalability, combined or separately. Since the scalable video coding design requires scalability to be provided at the encoder side, existing content cannot benefit from it. Efficient techniques for converting contents without scalability to a scalable format are desirable. In this paper, an approach for temporal scalability transcoding from H.264/AVC to scalable video coding in baseline and main profile is presented and the impact of the GOP size is analyzed. Independently of the GOP size chosen, time savings of around 63 % for baseline profile and 60 % for main profile are achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Mobile digital television is one of the new services introduced recently by telecommunications operators. Due to the possibilities of personalization and interaction provided, together with the increasing demand for this type of portable services, it will undoubtedly be a successful technology in the near future. Multimedia content is generally encoded by reducing the storage capacity necessary and bandwidth consumption in order to be transmitted. In order to adapt to the different characteristics of the networks and the varying capabilities of the devices, scalable video coding schemes have been proposed that provide temporal, spatial, and quality scalability, or a combination of these. Most of the existing video content is compressed using H.264/AVC, which is a single-layer codec, so these contents cannot benefit from the scalability tools due to the lack of intrinsic scalability provided in the bitstream at encoding time. This paper proposes a technique to convert from the single-layer H.264/AVC bitstream to a scalable bitstream with temporal scalability. Applying this approach, a reduction of 60% in coding complexity is achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The long-term and dynamic nature of user experience (UX) is challenging both UX design and evaluation activities. Although the CHI community acknowledges the importance of a temporal perspective on UX, we are still lacking an understanding of time and the meaning of temporal aspects in UX. In order to close this gap, we organized a workshop at NordiCHI 2012 exploring the topic with researchers and practitioners, especially searching for a common understanding of long-term UX and its relevance to the field. In this paper, we analyze the current state of the topic, discuss definitions and theoretical models based on previous work and the outcome of the workshop. We conclude with a working definition for long-term UX, its relevance for design and summarize future research directions.

Branch-and-Bound (B&B) algorithms to solve Global Optimization (GO) may use n-simplicial partition sets. The n-simplex represents an n-dimensional body with n+1 vertices in (n+1)-dimensional space. The aim of this article is to investigate the properties of the binary tree generated by iterative bisection of the longest edge (LE) of the regular n-simplex as search space. This way of splitting an n-simplex reduces the appearance of bad shaped simplices which facilitates the convergence of the algorithm. It also helps to have a more uniform sampling of the search space since the function is evaluated at vertices of simplices. A motivation for this research is the estimation of the pending computational work load during the B&B GO algorithm. Such estimation may be helpful to steer parallel versions of the algorithms. In this paper we will show that the way the longest edge is selected affects on the number of sub-problems, the number of similar shapes of those sub-problems and their roundness factor. The computational cost to obtain those metrics increases with the dimension n. Here we show the results for n leq 3, where for n=3, we have a 3-dimensional body in a 4-dimensional space. Due to the exponential growth of the binary tree, high performance computing is useful in order to reach a high precision or when n eq 3. We make use of parallel computing under MATLAB software.

In this paper, we present a hybrid circular queue method that can significantly boost the performance of stencil computations on GPU by carefully balancing usage of registers and shared-memory. Unlike earlier methods that rely on circular queues predominantly implemented using indirectly addressable shared memory, our hybrid method exploits a new reuse pattern spanning across the multiple time steps in stencil computations so that circular queues can be implemented by both shared memory and registers effectively in a balanced manner. We describe a framework that automatically finds the best placement of data in registers and shared memory in order to maximize the performance of stencil computations. Validation using four different types of stencils on three different GPU platforms shows that our hybrid method achieves speedups up to 2.93X over methods that use circular queues implemented with shared-memory only.

Nowadays, video communications between mobile devices are one of the most demanded multimedia services. Since Wyner-Ziv coding provides low cost video encoding, it is a suitable codec to encode video with less resources. On the other hand, the video delivery provided by Scalable Video Coding covers the needs of a wide range of homogeneous networks and different devices. As a consequence, Wyner-Ziv to Scalable Video Coding transcoding can offer a suitable framework to support scalable video communications between low-cost devices. However, the complexity of the transcoder accumulates most of the complexity of both codecs and it must be reduced. In this paper, we introduced an improved Wyner-Ziv to Scalable Video Coding transcoding framework to support homogeneous mobile video communications. The experimental results show that the complexity is reduced around 83.5% without significant Rate-Distortion penalty. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

With the aim of providing low complexity encoders, Wyner-Ziv video coding provides a new paradigm where the complexity of the encoder is moved to the decoder. However, this high decoding complexity could involve a problem in some applications which have delay restrictions. Nowadays parallel computing is a growing field into the computation market. In particular, most of personal computers and hardware for video coding includes multicore processors, which allows a parallel execution by means of several independent cores in a same chip. As a consequence, several DVC parallel decoding approaches are beginning to appear. This work proposes a parallel DVC decoding scheme for multicore processors, which decodes each GOP in an independent and parallel way. This scheme achieves above 70% time reduction without any rate-distortion penalty. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

H.264/AVC is the most recent predictive video compression standard to outperform other existing video coding standards by means of higher computational complexity. In recent years, heterogeneous computing has emerged as a cost-efficient solution for high-performance computing. In the literature, several algorithms have been proposed to accelerate video compression, but so far there have not been many solutions that deal with video codecs using heterogeneous systems. This paper proposes an algorithm to perform H.264/AVC inter prediction. The proposed algorithm performs the motion estimation, both with full-pixel and sub-pixel accuracy, using CUDA to assist the CPU, obtaining remarkable time reductions while maintaining rate-distortion performance. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
