Wyner-Ziv video coding presents a new paradigm which offers low-complexity video encoding. However, the Wyner-Ziv paradigm accumulates high complexity at the decoder side and this could involve difficulties for applications which have delay requisites. On the other hand, technological advances provide us with new hardware which supports parallel data processing. In this paper, a faster Wyner-Ziv video decoding scheme based on multicore processors is proposed. In this way, each frame is decoded by means of the collaboration between several processing units, achieving a time reduction up to 71% without significant rate-distortion drop penalty.

DRAM row buffer conflicts can increase memory access latency significantly. This paper presents a new pageallocation-based optimization that works seamlessly together with some existing hardware and software optimizations to eliminate significantly more row buffer conflicts. Validation in simulation using a set of selected scientific and engineering benchmarks against a few representative memory controller optimizations shows that our method can reduce row buffer miss rates by up to 76% (with an average of 37.4%). This reduction in row buffer miss rates will be translated into performance speedups by up to 15% (with an average of 5%).

This paper presents our current research efforts on efficient Java communication libraries over InfiniBand. The use of Java for network communications still delivers insufficient performance and does not exploit the performance and other special capabilities (RDMA and QoS) of high-speed networks, especially for this interconnect. In order to increase its Java communication performance, InfiniBand has been supported in our high performance sockets implementation, Java Fast Sockets (JFS), and it has been greatly improved the efficiency of Java Direct InfiniBand (Jdib), our low-level communication layer, enabling zero-copy RDMA capability in Java. According to our experimental results, Java communication performance has been improved significantly, reducing start-up latencies from 34 mus down to 12 and 7 mus for JFS and Jdib, respectively, whereas peak bandwidth has been increased from 0.78 Gbps sending serialized data up to 6.7 and 11.2 Gbps for JFS and Jdib, respectively. Finally, it has been analyzed the impact of these communication improvements on parallel Java applications, obtaining significant speedup increases of up to one order of magnitude on 128 cores.

StudioBRIDGE is an awareness system, based on instant messaging (IM), developed for students working in open studio spaces in the architecture Department at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT). The goal of StudioBRIDGE is to help students initiate online and offline interactions by giving them an awareness of nearby people, groups, locations, and events of the community. Even when students are working in close proximity to each other, they are often not aware of the activities and expertise of their colleagues nearby. We believe that this integrated awareness could lead to increased peer learning and expertise sharing by encouraging informal social communication, particularly in groups whose members have existing social and physical ties. In this paper, we describe the user community and the motivation, design, and initial pilot deployment of StudioBRIDGE. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The Centers for Disease Control defines syndromic surveillance as, an investigational approach where health department staff, assisted by automated data acquisition and generation of statistical alerts, monitor disease indicators in real-time or near real-time to detect outbreaks of disease earlier than would otherwise be possible with traditional public health methods (CDC, 2004). While syndromic surveillance has traditionally been used in the context of detecting natural outbreaks, it is increasingly being used to develop systems to detect bioterrorism outbreaks. Timely response to a bioterrorism event requires accurate information exchange between clinicians and public health officials. This entails building highly complex surveillance systems that provide access to heterogeneous/distributed medical data, computational resources and collaborative services, for real-time decision making in a highly reliable and secure environment. In this paper we propose enhancing syndromic surveillance through grid and autonomie computing augmentations, and present our approach to a proof of concept modeling and simulation environment.
