Mobile digital television is one of the new services introduced recently by telecommunications operators. Due to the possibilities of personalization and interaction provided, together with the increasing demand for this type of portable services, it will undoubtedly be a successful technology in the near future. Multimedia content is generally encoded by reducing the storage capacity necessary and bandwidth consumption in order to be transmitted. In order to adapt to the different characteristics of the networks and the varying capabilities of the devices, scalable video coding schemes have been proposed that provide temporal, spatial, and quality scalability, or a combination of these. Most of the existing video content is compressed using H.264/AVC, which is a single-layer codec, so these contents cannot benefit from the scalability tools due to the lack of intrinsic scalability provided in the bitstream at encoding time. This paper proposes a technique to convert from the single-layer H.264/AVC bitstream to a scalable bitstream with temporal scalability. Applying this approach, a reduction of 60% in coding complexity is achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Nowadays, video communications between mobile devices are one of the most demanded multimedia services. Since Wyner-Ziv coding provides low cost video encoding, it is a suitable codec to encode video with less resources. On the other hand, the video delivery provided by Scalable Video Coding covers the needs of a wide range of homogeneous networks and different devices. As a consequence, Wyner-Ziv to Scalable Video Coding transcoding can offer a suitable framework to support scalable video communications between low-cost devices. However, the complexity of the transcoder accumulates most of the complexity of both codecs and it must be reduced. In this paper, we introduced an improved Wyner-Ziv to Scalable Video Coding transcoding framework to support homogeneous mobile video communications. The experimental results show that the complexity is reduced around 83.5% without significant Rate-Distortion penalty. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

With the aim of providing low complexity encoders, Wyner-Ziv video coding provides a new paradigm where the complexity of the encoder is moved to the decoder. However, this high decoding complexity could involve a problem in some applications which have delay restrictions. Nowadays parallel computing is a growing field into the computation market. In particular, most of personal computers and hardware for video coding includes multicore processors, which allows a parallel execution by means of several independent cores in a same chip. As a consequence, several DVC parallel decoding approaches are beginning to appear. This work proposes a parallel DVC decoding scheme for multicore processors, which decodes each GOP in an independent and parallel way. This scheme achieves above 70% time reduction without any rate-distortion penalty. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

We consider the calculation of mathematical functions at the time of wireless superimposition of data sequences in IoT environments. IoT devices will be heavily resource limited, possibly parasitic or passive powered nodes. Although restricted in their computational capabilities, such nodes draw on a virtually unlimited power source. We exploit this property by trading computational load for communication load. In particular, we present a communication scheme by which mathematical computations can be executed at the time of wireless transmission. This transmission scheme enables the execution of complex computations by a network of resource restricted, cooperating nodes at a computational load below the operation's computational complexity. We derive the scheme analytically, explore its feasibility for dense networks in mathematical simulations and demonstrate its practicability in a case study with 15 nodes.

Finger motion classification using surface electromyogram (EMG) signals is currently being applied to myoelectric prosthetic hands with methods of pattern classification. It can be used to classify motion with great accuracy under ideal circumstances. However, the precision of classification falling to change the quantity of EMG feature with muscle fatigue has been a problem. We addressed this problem in this study, which was aimed at robustly classifying finger motion against changes in EMG features with muscle fatigue. We tested the changes in EMG features before and after muscle fatigue and propose a robust feature that uses a methods of estimating tension in finger motion by taking muscle fatigue into consideration. © 2012 IEEE.

Because the structure and function of a high-rise building is complex and the density of occupants is high, and the rescue from outside is very difficult, safe and timely evacuation is an important issue under high-rise building fires. Worsely, it is impossible to do experiments for economic, moral, or even legal reasons. In this paper, based on an ACP (artificial systems, computational experiments, parallel excution) approach, a design of an artificial evacuation system for computational experiments research on societies evacuation strategies is proposed. Based on the buildingEXODUS platform, the agent technology is used to build the high-rise building architectures and occupant individuals who have autonomous activities. By using CFAST software, numerical calculation technology is used to build several kinds of fire scenarios. By interactions and influences, an artificial evacuation system can be built. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes an improved Wyner-Ziv to H.264 transcoder for supporting mobile-to-mobile video communications. In this framework, both transmitter and receptor should employ video encoders and decoders of low complexity. Taking advantage of both paradigms, in terms of low complexity algorithms, a suitable solution consists in transcoding from Wyner-Ziv to H.264. In order to reduce this process this paper proposes an algorithm which is based on the hypothesis that macroblock coding mode decisions in H.264 video have a high correlation with the distribution of the side information residual in Wyner-Ziv video. The proposed algorithm, which is based on data mining techniques, selects one sub-set of the several coding modes in H.264. Simulation results show that the proposed transcoder reduces the inter prediction complexity in H.264 by up to 53%, while maintaining coding efficiency. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
