This article examines a new lightweight, slim, high energy efficient, light-transmitting, self-supporting envelope system, providing for seamless, free-form designs for use in architectural projects. The system exploits vacuum insulation panel technology. The research was based on envelope components already existing on the market and patents and prototypes built by independent laboratories, especially components implemented with silica gel insulation, as this is the most effective transparent thermal insulation there is today. The tests run on these materials revealed that there is not one that has all the features required of the new envelope model, although some do have properties that could be exploited to generate this envelope, namely, the vacuum chamber of vacuum insulation panels, the use of monolithic aerogel as insulation in some prototypes, and reinforced polyester barriers. These three design components have been combined and tested to design a new, variable geometry, energy-saving envelope system that also solves many of the problems that other studies ascribe to the use of vacuum insulation panels. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

For many in the field of HCI, location and space are synonymous;yet, as we move from the mobile era to the ubiquitous era, computing becomes entangled with notions of space. This workshop critically examines the role of space in human-computer interfaces. The objective is to bring together diverse perspectives of space, drawing from architecture, philosophy, art, geography, design, dance, spatial-cognition, mathematics, computing, and still other domains, towards foregrounding space in theoretical discussions and explorations within the CHI community. Expected outcomes are the reporting of fresh insights into the impact and role of space in the interaction process.

Aiming at a quantitative understanding of basic aspects of pedestrian dynamics, extensive and high-accuracy measurements of real-life pedestrian trajectories have been performed. A measurement strategy based on Microsoft Kinect TM has been used. Specifically, more than 100.000 pedestrians have been tracked while walking along a trafficked corridor at the Eindhoven University of technology, The Netherlands. The obtained trajectories have been analyzed as ensemble data. The main result consists of a statistical descriptions of pedestrian characteristic kinematic quantities such as positions and fundamental diagrams, possibly conditioned to the local crowd flow (e.g. co-flow or counter-flow).

Cloud computing is a new paradigm with a promising potential. However, issues of security, privacy, and trust raise concerns and discourage its adoption. In previous work we presented a framework for the selection of appropriate cloud provider based on security and privacy requirements criteria. However, the adoption of cloud includes release of control over valuable assets, which constitutes trust in the cloud provider of paramount importance. In this paper we extend the framework by incorporating trust and control concepts in its language and adding a new activity to properly identify and reason about trust assumptions during the selection of appropriate cloud provider. Also, the CASE tool was extended to support the new activity. A case study is used to illustrate the usefulness of our approach. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Scalable video coding is a recent extension of the advanced video coding H.264/AVC standard developed jointly by ISO/IEC and ITU-T, which allows adapting the bitstream easily by dropping parts of it named layers. This adaptation makes it possible for a single bitstream to meet the requirements for reliable delivery of video to diverse clients over heterogeneous networks using temporal, spatial or quality scalability, combined or separately. Since the scalable video coding design requires scalability to be provided at the encoder side, existing content cannot benefit from it. Efficient techniques for converting contents without scalability to a scalable format are desirable. In this paper, an approach for temporal scalability transcoding from H.264/AVC to scalable video coding in baseline and main profile is presented and the impact of the GOP size is analyzed. Independently of the GOP size chosen, time savings of around 63 % for baseline profile and 60 % for main profile are achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Multispeculative Functional Units (MSFUs) are arithmetic functional units that operate using several predictors for the carry signal. The carry prediction helps to shorten the critical path of the functional unit. The average performance of these units is determined by the hit rate of the prediction. In spite of utilizing more than one predictor, none or only one additional cycle is enough for producing the correct result in the majority of the cases. In this paper we present multispeculation as a way of increasing the performance of tree structures with a negligible area penalty. By judiciously introducing these structures into computation trees, it will only be necessary to predict in certain selected nodes, thus minimizing the number of operations that can potentially mispredict. Hence, the average latency will be diminished and thus performance will be increased. Our experiments show that it is possible to improve on average 24% and 38% execution time, when considering logarithmic and linear modules, respectively.

Cloud computing is without a doubt one of the most significant innovations presented in the global technological map. The number of potential users enrolling and using cloud services increases exponentially on a daily bases. The great demand from online users for cloud services along with the reduced operational costs that the latter offers has motivated many organisations and companies to consider migrating organizational services, data and applications on the Cloud. However, despite the various positive characteristics of all cloud service models like reduced costs, better availability insurance, on demand data storage and computation power, cloud migration may hinder various security and privacy issues that need to be considered before an organization or company decides to move on to the Cloud. This paper examines the importance of trust factors in the development and adoption of internet based cultural information systems. The proposed trust model identifies the relationship between user communication goals and trust parameters from both technical and social perspectives. To this end, it combines uses and gratifications theory as well as the notion of organisational reputation in order to identify the system’s expected behaviour, i.e., what things the system needs to do in order to be trusted by the users, together with a trust modelling methodology in order to explicitly model and analyse trust assumptions. The approach is explained through an example demonstrating how reasoning about trust relationships affects the development of cultural internet-based systems. © 2013 European and Mediterranean Conference on Information systems.
