Old Semarang City: the sustainability of traditional city patterns in Java

Research on old city patterns in the world has become an area for archeologists. Historians and archeologists in Java, Indonesia, discovered a city center with a North-South axis, alun-alun (open space) surrounding by the government and religious building. This concept continued from the Majapahit Kingdom (12-15 centuries) to the Islamic Sultanate (15th century) and stopped in the Islamic Mataram Sultanate (17th century). However, Semarang City, as a city subordinate to the Islamic sultanate, has the same city center pattern, but the North-South axis is blurred. This research used data from several old maps, sketch drawings, photographs, and traditional city patterns in Java to find out the whole model of old Semarang City. Semarang also had a North-South axis that was no longer visible due to constructing the great pos road, railroad line, and city development. The sustainability of traditional city patterns in Java has not stopped in Mataram Islam sultanate city. This pattern also applied to the city as a sub-ordinate Islamic sultanate. The sustainability of the urban pattern, starting from the influencing power, shifted to the spreading of religion. The traditional city pattern can be a reference in city design based on the city's history.

There have been many researches on the conservation efforts of historical cities. The building inventory stage is the first step in conservation efforts to protect buildings from the past in order to have benefits in the present. This paper provides some data on buildings that undergo land subsidence in historical areas. Semarang Old City is a historical area built by the Colonial government in the 17th century. After nearly 320 years, some of these buildings have been damaged. This research, which focuses on buildings damaged by land subsidence will collect data from 245 existing buildings in 40 ha area. The approach method uses historical buildings, photos of old buildings, and field surveys. Several old buildings have been detected to be decreased in height due to land subsidence. This can be seen by comparing photos of old buildings from the past and the present. The research analysis uses sketches and photoshop to provide information on how much the height is decreased visually. This inventory results will be able to give advice to the government regarding the appropriate conservation actions to take in an area experiencing land subsidence. This research will also help preserve buildings and environment according to current and future needs in order to preserve their cultural meaning.

There are not many studies that discuss land subsidence and try to measure it in historic areas. This paper will take an inventory of historical areas that have existed since the early growth of cities such as Semarang Chinatown, which has existed since the 17th century. This paper is part of the results of research on land subsidence in coastal cities in Java, which have left many historical areas. Semarang City is one of the case studies because it has a high land subsidence rate of around 20 cm/year in the North Semarang area. Indeed, this area in the past was an ocean. However, due to sedimentation, on the old 1700s map, this area has become a marsh. After becoming mainland, several historical areas stood on young alluvial land. The purpose of this paper is to make an inventory of old buildings in the historic area of Chinatown. On the map from 1695 to now, after 305 years, the area has experienced land subsidence, which can be seen visually in several buildings. The research method used old photos, old maps, and field surveys by taking samples of several old residences that still exist. To strengthen the data, the use of Google street view is very helpful in seeing conditions in the field. The recommendation of this research is to provide directions for an inventory of the list of buildings that need to be conserved due to the hazard of subsidence, which is currently not being felt by the local community.

Through a critical reading of city branding theories and practices, this article identifies a nexus between city branding and urban planning related to master planning and placemaking. It brings attention to the challenges facing city branding including asymmetrical political processes, social inequity, tokenism, and gentrification. While city branding's recent turn to participatory approaches unveils a rampant adoption of planning processes repackaged as master planning the place brand strategy, this stream of research and practice remains isolated and disconnected from urban planning theory and ethics. Recognizing this link, the article suggests, could help city branding address its challenges and develop its theoretical basis with more socially responsible and normative underpinnings.

This essay explores the co-construction of urban health and blight through architectural representation during urban renewal, exploring how buildings symbolically stood for social and epidemiological diagnoses, producing racial othering through depictions of space. Analysis of photographs, building surveys, real estate appraisals, maps, reports, and advertisements preceding urban renewal in Charlottesville, Virginia, reveals a racialized gaze that constructed problematic associations of whiteness with health and Blackness with blight. We argue that racialized image-making practices perpetuated inequities that urban renewal policy purported to reconcile while masking the true generating dynamics of white neglect and wealth extraction.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the pattern of interrelationships in deprivations of sustainable livelihood capital assets, sub-groups deprivation variations in light of the theoretical and empirical frameworks, and suggest recommendations for Asset Based Social policy (ABS). The research reviews the approaches of informal settlement interventions vis-a-vise livelihood capital assets, how livelihood capital assets deprivations affect each other, the relationships of assets and functioning of capability, and the institution role on access and control of assets by vulnerable sub-groups. The case study area was from two informal settlements of Addis Ketema sub-city Wereda 07 (the inner-city slum) and kolfe keranyo sub-city Wereda 03 (peri-urban). The research applied an explanatory mixed-method sequential design consisting of quantitative research based on a house-to-house random sampling survey, followed by the qualitative method of individual case study and key-informants interview. The research refined strategic issues/ indicators that require ABS interventions from the many aspects of deprivations relationships and argued in line with the theoretical and empirical frameworks. The research implicated strengthening institutions to make livelihood capital assets closer to vulnerable sub-groups, especially in peri-urban, empowering community associations bargain for poor rights, reinforce capability functioning for livelihood capital asset accumulation. ABS is crucial for addressing the strategic issue of livelihood capital assets deprivations, tackling institutional and legal constraints, effective functioning of assets and capability, address risk, safety, and vulnerability in informal settlements. The ABS policy improves the wellbeing of poor and vulnerable sub-groups through asset accession, asset valorization, and asset consolidation.

Currently,China has entered the period of land-sea coordinated planning,yet there are few studies on the interaction between land use intensity and sea eco-security in coastal ***,taking the coastal zone of Xiamen as an example,this paper develops a comprehensive system to evaluate the coupling degree between spatial utilization intensity and eco-security based on the coupling degree theory in *** the paper quantitatively analyzes and identifies the coupling coordination degree of various shore sections into four categories:well-coordinated and highly-coupled,moderately-coordinated and moderately-coupled,moderately-coordinated and slightly-coupled,and primary-level coordinated and ***,it puts forward spatial planning guidelines for the four types of shore sections on the basis of land-sea ***,reserved ecological section should follow the principle of giving priority to the marine ecosystem,and strictly protecting the ecosystem and controlling development;ecological promotion section should follow the principle of optimizing land development based on the sea resources,and reserving space for transformation;restricted development section should follow the principle of land-sea balance,and only allowing low-impact development activities to achieve synchronous land-sea development;development leverage section should follow the principle of optimizing marine development based on land resources,giving full play to the advantages of coastal resources and featured coastal space,and achieving spatial optimization in accordance with people-oriented principles and local *** research intends to provide a scientific basis for coastal zone planning and decision-making and a paradigm guide for gulf cities to coordinate the marine ecosystem and land development.

Outdoor spaces are important to sustainable cities as they accommodate different types of activities and contribute to the livability of the urban areas. The enjoyment of outdoor spaces requires a comfortable thermal environment, especially in hot arid regions. Recent studies have investigated the effects of buildings, trees, water, and landscape design on improving thermal comfort;however, only a few studies have investigated the impact of solar-scape elements. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of solar pavilions on improving thermal comfort in a residential area in New Borg Al-Arab, Egypt, and to identify the optimum distribution method for increasing the usability and function of outdoor spaces during the summer. This study was undertaken on a summer's day in the peak period using ENVI-met software. Five scenarios employing different solar pavilion distribution methods were applied and simulated in the case study area. Physiological equivalent temperature values were calculated for each scenario. The results demonstrated that the individual distribution of solar pavilions was the best at improving thermal comfort. A design methodology for urban designers is suggested to improve outdoor thermal comfort and satisfy users' demand for energy in existing and new communities.
