Due to demographical factors, there will be a 25% decline in the national labor pool of eligible 17 to 21 year old men by 1992. As the Navy faces fierce competition with other services and private industry for the dwindling personnel resources of the nation, efforts must be made to consider automating certain tasks, especially those that are hazardous, boring, and labor intensive onboard ships at sea. The Surface Ship Continuing Concept Formulation (CONFORM) Program (SEA-5014) sponsored the Naval Surface Weapons Center's roboticslaboratory to identify potential applications of robotic and artificialintelligence systems to operation and mission activities for shipboard use. The results of the investigation concerning applications of robotics to automate the aforementioned tasks are presented. Changes in current manning levels for selected tasks and ship classes, i.e., CVs, CVNs, LPDs, LPNs, and auxiliaries are examined. Future ship designs incorporating robotics, such as the advance based repair (ABR) ship are discussed. Twenty-four applications were cited in the study which include a remote controlled vehicle for flight deck operations, limited tasks in biological, chemical, and radiation environments, computer aided command decision aids, ordnance handling, undersea search, recovery, and salvage, and ventilation duct cleaning. Four of the applications and their subsequent hardware fruition will be discussed.

An autonomous robotic manipulator can reduce uncertainty in the locations of objects in either of two ways: by sensing, or by motion strategies. This paper explores the use of motion strategies to eliminate uncertainty, without the use of sensors. The approach is demonstrated within the context of a simple method to orient planar objects. A randomly oriented object is dropped into a tray. When the tray is tilted, the object can slide into walls, along walls, and into corners, sometimes with the effect of reducing the number of possible orientations. For some objects a sequence of tilting operations exists that leaves the object's orientation completely determined. The paper describes an automatic planner that constructs such a tilting program, using a simple model of the mechanics of sliding. The planner has been implemented, the resulting programs have been executed using a tray attached to an industrial manipulator, and sometimes the programs work. The paper also explores the issue of sensorless manipulation, tray-tilting in particular, within the context of a formal framework first described by Lozano-Pérez, Mason, and Taylor [1984]. It is observed that sensorless motion strategies perform conditional actions using mechanical decisions in place of environmental inquiries.

In this review, we provide an overview of emerging trends and challenges in the field of intelligent and autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles. Recent advances in the field of perception, planning, and decision-making for autonomous vehicles have led to great improvements in functional capabilities, with several prototypes already driving on our roads and streets. Yet challenges remain regarding guaranteed performance and safety under all driving circumstances. For instance, planning methods that provide safe and system-compliant performance in complex, cluttered environments while modeling the uncertain interaction with other traffic participants are required. Furthermore, new paradigms, such as interactive planning and end-to-end learning, open up questions regarding safety and reliability that need to be addressed. In this survey, we emphasize recent approaches for integrated perception and planning and for behavior-aware planning, many of which rely on machine learning. This raises the question of verification and safety, which we also touch upon. Finally, we discuss the state of the art and remaining challenges for managing fleets of autonomous vehicles.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in leveraging the metaverse to enhance community engagement and healthcare. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of wearable devices and sensors utilized within immersive environments to improve well-being and healthcare outcomes. We categorize the healthcare application domains that employ wearable devices and identify commonly used devices and sensors based on a thorough review of the literature. Our study offers a detailed summary of these applications, highlighting their potential to enhance overall quality of life through remote monitoring, rehabilitation, and chronic disease management. Furthermore, we address existing research gaps and challenges in this field, offering insights for future research directions. This meta-review emphasizes the need for further exploration in the rapidly evolving domain of wearable healthcare technologies within the metaverse, presenting an overview of the current state of wearable devices in healthcare and underscoring their significance in advancing healthcare delivery and outcomes.

robotics is undergoing a major transformation in scope and dimension. From a largely dominant industrial focus, robotics is rapidly expanding into human environments and vigorously engaged in its new challenges. Interacting with, assisting, serving, and exploring with humans, the emerging robots will increasingly touch people and their lives. The Springer Tracts in Advanced robotics (STAR) is devoted to bringing to the research community the latest advances in the robotics field on the basis of their significance and quality. Through a wide and timely dis semination of critical research developments in robotics, our objective with this series is to promote more exchanges and collaborations among the re searchers in the community and contribute to further advancements in this rapidly growing field. As one of robotics pioneering symposia, the International Symposium on robotics Research (ISRR) has established over the past two decades some of the fields most fundamental and lasting contributions. Since the launching of STAR, ISRR and several other thematic symposia in robotics find an important platform for closer links and extended reach within the robotics community. This twelfth edition of robotics Research, edited by Sebastian Thrun, Rodney Brooks, and Hugh Durrant-Whyte, offers in its 14-part volume a collection of a broad range of topics in robotics. The content of these contributions provides a wide coverage of the current state of robotics research: the advances and challenges in its theoretical foundation and technology basis, and the developments in its traditional and novel areas of apphcations.

The Metaverse presents an emerging creative expression and collaboration frontier where generative artificialintelligence (GenAI) can play a pivotal role with its ability to generate multimodal content from simple prompts. These prompts allow the metaverse to interact with GenAI, where context information, instructions, input data, or even output indications constituting the prompt can come from within the metaverse. However, their integration poses challenges regarding interoperability, lack of standards, scalability, and maintaining a high-quality user experience. This paper explores how GenAI can productively assist in enhancing creativity within the contexts of the Metaverse and unlock new opportunities. We provide a technical, in-depth overview of the different generative models for image, video, audio, and 3D content within the Metaverse environments. We also explore the bottlenecks, opportunities, and innovative applications of GenAI from the perspectives of end users, developers, service providers, and AI researchers. This survey commences by highlighting the potential of GenAI for enhancing the Metaverse experience through dynamic content generation to populate massive virtual worlds. Subsequently, we shed light on the ongoing research practices and trends in multimodal content generation, enhancing realism and creativity and alleviating bottlenecks related to standardization, computational cost, privacy, and safety. Lastly, we share insights into promising research directions toward the integration of GenAI with the Metaverse for creative enhancement, improved immersion, and innovative interactive applications.
