Facial expression recognition plays a pivotal role in comprehending emotions and social interactions, particularly in individuals grappling with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who often encounter challenges in non-verbal communication. For some with ASD, even subtle shifts in their facial expressions can prove elusive, rendering it arduous to categorize their emotional states accurately. Consequently, the analysis and processing of facial expression data hold the potential to facilitate early autism diagnosis, thereby enabling timely therapeutic interventions and alleviating the economic and psychological burdens experienced by patients. In this study, we introduce an enhanced approach that leverages a fuzzy convolutional neural network (CNN) and an Improved Binary Genetic Algorithm (IBGA) for autism diagnosis based on facial expression data. Our model confronts the intricate task of recognizing facial images by selecting salient features employing the IBGA method. Moreover, it employs fuzzy weights to ascertain the probability of similarity within the classifier layer. Our proposed model has yielded impressive outcomes, boasting an average accuracy of 0.9405 for ASD detection and 0.9365 for the recognition of six distinct facial expressions. These results hold profound implications for the enhancement of emotion recognition systems and the refinement of interventions aimed at bolstering social interactions for individuals grappling with ASD. © 2024, The Authors. Eating monitoring has remained an open challenge in medical research for years due to the lack of non-invasive sensors for continuous monitoring and the reliable methods for automatic behavior detection. In this paper, we present a pilot study using the wearable 24-hour ECG for sensing and tailoring the sophisticated deep learning for ad-hoc and interpretable detection. This is accomplished using a collocative learning framework in which 1) we construct collocative tensors as pseudo-images from 1D ECG signals to improve the feasibility of 2D image-based deep models;2) we formulate the cardiac logic of analyzing the ECG data in a comparative way as periodic attention regulators so as to guide the deep inference to collect evidence in a human comprehensible manner;and 3) we improve the interpretability of the framework by enabling the backtracking of evidence with a set of methods designed for Class Activation Mapping (CAM) decoding and decision tree/forest generation. The effectiveness of the proposed framework has been validated on the largest ECG dataset of eating behavior with superior performance over conventional models, and its capacity of cardiac evidence mining has also been verified through the consistency of the evidence it backtracked and that of the previous medical studies. © 2025, CC BY.

Global adoption of wind energy continues to increase, while improving the efficiency of turbine settings requires reliable wind speed (WS) models. The latest models rely on artificial intelligence (AI) optimizations which constructs tests on a range of novel hybrid models to examine the reliability. Gradient Boosting (GB), Random Forest (RF), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) are used in new combinations for data pre-processing. A Time Varying Filter-based Empirical Mode Decomposition (TVFEMD) model is coupled with the GB and LSTM standalone models, to create TVFEMD-GB and TVFEMD-LSTM hybrids, which are run in competition with each other. Eventually, a preferred hybrid form is established, simultaneous hybridization of TVFEMD with GB and LSTM. This study is the first to hybridize these fundamental systems, and create a TVFEMD-GB-LSTM model that can forecast WS. This study finds that the novel hybrid models exhibit superior performance to standalone GB and LSTM models, opening the pathway to alternative WS prediction techniques. © 2024 The Authors

Many scientific fields, including human gut microbiome science, collect multivariate count data where the sum of the counts is unrelated to the scale of the underlying system being measured (e.g., total microbial load in a subject’s colon). This disconnect complicates downstream analyses such as differential analysis in case-control studies. This article is motivated by a novel study of in vitro human gut microbiome models. Popular tools for analyzing these data led to dramatically elevated rates of both false positives and false negatives. To understand those failures, we provide a formal problem statement that frames these challenges of scale in terms of the classical theory of identifiability. We call this the problem of Scale Reliant Inference (SRI). We use this formulation to prove fundamental limits on SRI in terms of criteria such as consistency and type-I error control. We show that the failures of existing methods stem from a fundamental failure to properly quantify uncertainty in the system scale. We demonstrate that a particular type of Bayesian model called a Bayesian Partially Identified Model (PIMs) can correctly quantify uncertainty in SRI. We introduce Scale Simulation Random Variables (SSRVs) as a flexible and efficient approach to specifying and inferring Bayesian PIMs. In the context of both real and simulated data, we find SSRVs drastically decrease type-I and type-II error rates. © 2022, CC BY.

Pseudo-labeling Based Practical Semi-Supervised Meta-Training for Few-Shot Learning

Most existing few-shot learning (FSL) methods require a large amount of labeled data in meta-training, which is a major limit. To reduce the requirement of labels, a semi-supervised meta-training (SSMT) setting has been proposed for FSL, which includes only a few labeled samples and numbers of unlabeled samples in base classes. However, existing methods under this setting require class-aware sample selection from the unlabeled set, which violates the assumption of unlabeled set. In this paper, we propose a practical semi-supervised meta-training setting with truly unlabeled data to facilitate the applications of FSL in realistic scenarios. To better utilize both the labeled and truly unlabeled data, we propose a simple and effective meta-training framework, called pseudo-labeling based meta-learning (PLML). Firstly, we train a classifier via common semi-supervised learning (SSL) and use it to obtain the pseudo-labels of unlabeled data. Then we build few-shot tasks from labeled and pseudo-labeled data and design a novel finetuning method with feature smoothing and noise suppression to better learn the FSL model from noise labels. Surprisingly, through extensive experiments across two FSL datasets, we find that this simple meta-training framework effectively prevents the performance degradation of various FSL models under limited labeled data, and also significantly outperforms the representative SSMT models. Besides, benefiting from meta-training, our method also improves several representative SSL algorithms as well. Exploiting label correlations is important to multi-label classification. Previous methods capture the high-order label correlations mainly by transforming the label matrix to a latent label space with low-rank matrix factorization. However, the label matrix is generally a full-rank or approximate full-rank matrix, making the low-rank factorization inappropriate. Besides, in the latent space, the label correlations will become implicit. To this end, we propose a simple yet effective method to depict the high-order label correlations explicitly, and at the same time maintain the high-rank of the label matrix. Moreover, we estimate the label correlations and infer model parameters simultaneously via the local geometric structure of the input to achieve mutual enhancement. Comparative studies over twelve benchmark data sets validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in multi-label classification. In this research, we try to investigate a solar-geothermal energy system. This system includes three turbines for power production, a PEM electrolyzer for hydrogen production, and a thermoelectric for generating electricity from excess heat. In addition, the seawater will be passed through the osmotic cycle to gain fresh water. The required power for this osmotic cycle will be obtained through the energy produced by the main turbines. The generated load, hydrogen production flow rate, purified water flow rate, and heating consumption are assessed in this study. The results showed that this system can produce 3.8 megawatts of electricity as well as 8 g per second of hydrogen fuel at the operating point. Also, the energy efficiency of this system is estimated to be 19%. Afterward, machine learning methods are used to optimize designing parameters, and the optimum operating point in terms of useful power and stored fuel flow rate is obtained by a genetic algorithm. The optimum operating point of this energy system has a useful power output of 4.099 megawatts and a hydrogen flow rate of 29 g per second. In the end, the distribution of the design parameters is displayed for points of the beam curve. © 2022

The implementation of robust, stable, and user-centered data analytics and machine learning models is confronted by numerous challenges in production and manufacturing. Therefore, a systematic approach is required to develop, evaluate, and deploy such models. The data-driven knowledge discovery framework provides an orderly partition of the data-mining processes to ensure the practical implementation of data analytics and machine learning models. However, the practical application of robust industry-specific data-driven knowledge discovery models faces multiple data– and model-development–related issues. These issues should be carefully addressed by allowing a flexible, customized, and industry-specific knowledge discovery framework;in our case, this takes the form of the cross-industry standard process for data mining (CRISP-DM). This framework is designed to ensure active cooperation between different phases to adequately address data- and model-related issues. In this paper, we review several extensions of CRISP-DM models and various data-robustness– and model-robustness–related problems in machine learning, which currently lacks proper cooperation between data experts and business experts because of the limitations of data-driven knowledge discovery models. With the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing platforms, an increasing number of omics technologies, such as genomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics, are being applied to disease genetics research. However, biological data often exhibit high dimensionality and significant noise, making it challenging to effectively distinguish disease subtypes using a single-omics approach. To address these challenges and better capture the interactions among DNA, RNA, and proteins described by the central dogma, numerous studies have leveraged artificial intelligence to develop multi-omics models for disease research. These AI-driven models have improved the accuracy of disease prediction and facilitated the identification of genetic loci associated with diseases, thus advancing precision medicine. This paper reviews the mathematical definitions of multi-omics, strategies for integrating multi-omics data, applications of artificial intelligence and deep learning in multi-omics, the establishment of foundational models, and breakthroughs in multi-omics technologies, drawing insights from over 130 related articles. It aims to provide practical guidance for computational biologists to better understand and effectively utilize AI-based multi-omics machine learning algorithms in the context of central dogma.
