Recently, order-preserving pattern (OPP) mining, a new sequential pattern mining method, has been proposed to mine frequent relative orders in a time series. Although frequent relative orders can be used as features to classify a time series, the mined patterns do not reflect the differences between two classes of time series well. To effectively discover the differences between time series, this paper addresses the top-k contrast OPP (COPP) mining and proposes a COPP-Miner algorithm to discover the top-k contrast patterns as features for time series classification, avoiding the problem of improper parameter setting. COPP-Miner is composed of three parts: extreme point extraction to reduce the length of the original time series, forward mining, and reverse mining to discover COPPs. Forward mining contains three steps: group pattern fusion strategy to generate candidate patterns, the support rate calculation method to efficiently calculate the support of a pattern, and two pruning strategies to further prune candidate patterns. Reverse mining uses one pruning strategy to prune candidate patterns and consists of applying the same process as forward mining. Experimental results validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm and show that top-k COPPs can be used as features to obtain a better classification performance. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Pre-training for ad-hoc retrieval: Hyperlink is also you need

Designing pre-training objectives that more closely resemble the downstream tasks for pre-trained language models can lead to better performance at the fine-tuning stage, especially in the ad-hoc retrieval area. Existing pre-training approaches tailored for IR tried to incorporate weak supervised signals, such as query-likelihood based sampling, to construct pseudo query-document pairs from the raw textual corpus. However, these signals rely heavily on the sampling method. For example, the query likelihood model may lead to much noise in the constructed pre-training data. In this paper, we propose to leverage the large-scale hyperlinks and anchor texts to pre-train the language model for ad-hoc retrieval. Since the anchor texts are created by webmasters and can usually summarize the target document, it can help to build more accurate and reliable pre-training samples than a specific algorithm. Considering different views of the downstream ad-hoc retrieval, we devise four pre-training tasks based on the hyperlinks. We then pre-train the Transformer model to predict the pair-wise preference, jointly with the Masked Language Model objective. Experimental results on two large-scale ad-hoc retrieval datasets show the significant improvement of our model compared with the existing methods. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. With widespread modernization, digitization and transformations of most of industries, artificial intelligence (AI) has become the key enabler in that modernization journey. AI offers substantial capabilities to solve new problems and optimise existing solutions specialising on specific problems and learning from different domains. AI solutions can be either explainable or black box ones with the latter being urged to improve since they cannot trust. Case-based Reasoning (CBR) is an explainable AI approach where solutions are provided along with relevant explanations in terms of why a solution was selected. However, CBR, like most other explainable approaches, has several limitations in terms of scalability, large data volumes, domain complexity, that reduce its ability to scale any CBR system in industrial applications. In this paper, we provide a heterogeneous CBR framework - DeepKAF where we combine CBR paradigm with Deep Learning architectures to solve complicated Natural Language Processing (NLP) problems (eg. mixed language and grammatically incorrect text).DeepKAF is built based on continuous research in the area of Deep Learning and CBR. DeepKAF has been implemented and used across different domains, test use cases and research models as an ensemble deep learning and CBR Architecture. © 2020 IEEE.

Research has shown that digital game players often feel engagement and rapport with a game hero or character when they can channel their own ambitions and goals through the hero’s journey in the game world;in essence, they feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment whenever they put the game mechanics to use to help the hero reach a positive ending to the game quests. In the case of cooperative gameplay, rapport also has to do with their perception of their peers’ skills, gameplay style and behavior within the game. In this paper, we describe an experiment to identify whether matching players with different personalities, as characterized by the OCEAN or Big-5 personality model, can influence their player experience with a custom-made, cooperative game. © 2021, CC BY.

Non-autoregressive transformer with unified bidirectional decoder for automatic speech recognition

Non-autoregressive (NAR) transformer models have been studied intensively in automatic speech recognition (ASR), and a substantial part of NAR transformer models is to use the casual mask to limit token dependencies. However, the casual mask is designed for the left-to-right decoding process of the non-parallel autoregressive (AR) transformer, which is inappropriate for the parallel NAR transformer since it ignores the right-to-left contexts. Some models are proposed to utilize right-to-left contexts with an extra decoder, but these methods increase the model complexity. To tackle the above problems, we propose a new non-autoregressive transformer with a unified bidirectional decoder (NAT-UBD), which can simultaneously utilize left-to-right and right-to-left contexts. However, direct use of bidirectional contexts will cause information leakage, which means the decoder output can be affected by the character information from the input of the same position. To avoid information leakage, we propose a novel attention mask and modify vanilla queries, keys, and values matrices for NAT-UBD. Experimental results verify that NAT-UBD can achieve character error rates (CERs) of 5.0%/5.5% on the Aishell1 dev/test sets, outperforming all previous NAR transformer models. Moreover, NAT-UBD can run 49.8× faster than the AR transformer baseline when decoding in a single step. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Models of human behaviour, such as pedestrian flows, are beneficial for safe and efficient operation of mobile robots. We present a new methodology for benchmarking of pedestrian flow models based on the afforded safety of robot navigation in human-populated environments. While previous evaluations of pedestrian flow models focused on their predictive capabilities, we assess their ability to support safe path planning and scheduling. Using real-world datasets gathered continuously over several weeks, we benchmark state-of-the-art pedestrian flow models, including both time-averaged and time-sensitive models. In the evaluation, we use the learned models to plan robot trajectories and then observe the number of times when the robot gets too close to humans, using a predefined social distance threshold. The experiments show that while traditional evaluation criteria based on model fidelity differ only marginally, the introduced criteria vary significantly depending on the model used, providing a natural interpretation of the expected safety of the system. For the time-averaged flow models, the number of encounters increases linearly with the percentage operating time of the robot, as might be reasonably expected. By contrast, for the time-sensitive models, the number of encounters grows sublinearly with the percentage operating time, by planning to avoid congested areas and times.

Cancer is a rapidly evolving disease, with complex physiological changes throughout its development. Different patients of the same cancer type may require distinct treatments depending on the level of development. Hence it is essential to identify the genes and biological processes strongly associated with cancer progression to design an effective treatment plan. Our study has found that cancer samples of the same development stage (or grade, subtype) tend to share highly unique co-expression patterns, providing considerably stronger discerning power than differential expressions for cancer staging (and grading, subtyping). Based on this, we have developed a framework for identification and analyses of genes and pathways strongly associated with a cancer's development through identification of co-expression patterns that become increasingly stronger or weaker over cancer samples from early through advanced stages. Functional analyses of such co-expressed genes reveal that (1) cell-cycle, immune response, ribosome, proteasome and oxidative phosphorylation, among others, strongly associate with cancer development, (2) the co-expression patterns among ribosome, proteasome and oxidative phosphorylation genes tend to become increasingly weaker as a cancer advances, for almost all cancer types, and (3) the co-expression patterns among cell cycle and immune response genes tend to become increasingly stronger with cancer progression. We anticipate that co-expression-based analyses like we present here will become a key technique for functional studies of cancer development and evolution.

Gaussian Processes (GPs) define distributions over functions and their generalization capabilities depend heavily on the choice of kernels. In this paper, we propose a novel structure-aware random Fourier (SRF) kernel for GPs that brings several benefits when modeling graph-structured data. First, SRF kernel is defined with a spectral distribution based on the Fourier duality given by the Bochner's theorem, transforming the kernel learning problem to a distribution inference problem. Second, SRF kernel admits a random Fourier feature formulation that makes the kernel scalable for optimization. Third, SRF kernel enables to leverage geometric structures by taking subgraphs as inputs. To effectively optimize GPs with SRF kernel, we develop a variational EM algorithm, which alternates between an inference procedure (E-step) and a learning procedure (M-step). Experimental results on five real-world datasets show that our model can achieve state-of-the-art performance in two typical graph learning tasks, i.e., object classification and link prediction.

Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in the natural language processing (NLP) area. Recently, representation learning methods (e.g., character embedding and word embedding) have achieved promising recognition results. However, existing models only consider partial features derived from words or characters while failing to integrate semantic and syntactic information (e.g., capitalization, inter-word relations, keywords, lexical phrases, etc.) from multi-level perspectives. Intuitively, multi-level features can be helpful when recognizing named entities from complex sentences. In this study, we propose a novel framework called attention-based multi-level feature fusion (AMFF), which is used to capture the multi-level features from different perspectives to improve NER. Our model consists of four components to respectively capture the local character-level, global character-level, local word-level, and global word-level features, which are then fed into a BiLSTM-CRF network for the final sequence labeling. Deep subspace clustering (DSC) with the auto-encoder and self-expression layer is of great concern due to encouraging performance. However, existing methods usually adopt a “single-task” strategy based on a single dataset, without considering other related tasks or data. As such, they cannot discover other useful information to improve the clustering task. Besides, the local structure preservation of the latent codes in mapping is usually ignored. In this paper, we therefore present an effective “multi-task” strategy via the self-supervised data augmentation, and propose a new end-to-end trainable Triplet Deep Subspace Clustering Network (TDSC-net). Specifically, TDSC-net firstly generates triplet data (i.e., anchor, positive and negative data) from input data by a spectral clustering module and a self-supervised data augmentation module. This can enable it to inherit the merits of self-supervised learning and multitask learning implicitly. After that, TDSC-net builds a triplet deep autoencoder network with a self-expression layer, which takes the triplet data as input, where they share the common network layers (i.e., autoencoder and self-expression layers) over the triple tasks for complementary learning and mutual supervision. A triplet loss is also included to retain the local information of deep latent codes, which will also benefit the self-expression. Furthermore, TDSC-net separates the self-expression layer from decoding process to improve the efficiency of reconstruction. Extensive results on several public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our triplet-task DSC strategy.
