Cluster based bit vector mining algorithm for finding frequent itemsets in temporal databases

In this paper, we introduce an efficient algorithm using a new technique to find frequent itemsets from a huge set of itemsets called Cluster based Bit Vectors for Association Rule Mining (CBVAR). In this work, all the items in a transaction are converted into bits (0 or 1). A cluster is created by scanning the database only once. Then frequent 1-itemsets are extracted directly from the cluster table. Moreover, frequent k-itemsets, where k ≥ 2 are obtained by using Logical AND between the items in a cluster table. This approach reduces main memory requirement since it considers only a small cluster at a time and as scalable for any large size of database. The overall performance of this method is significantly better than that of the previously developed algorithms for effective decision making.

E -learning, the newly introduced concept has dramatically changed the previous style of learning and made learning material within the reach of the common pupils aspiring higher education. Contextually, the websites of distance learning in India with special reference to the state West Bengal need to be radically ultra modernized in such a way so that learning materials will be available to the students and more pupils w0ill pay attention and interest to go for this web enabled learning which will gradually enhance the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of West Bengal. In our study a comparative analysis has been made among the distance learning web pages or websites of internationally reputed universities and the distance learning web pages or websites of the universities of West Bengal. Moreover the present GER of advanced countries along with West Bengal are taken. The correlation between the effectiveness of websites and GER is analyzed and necessary suggestions with comments are recommended to increase the effectiveness of the university distance learning websites in West Bengal.

Quality of content in e-learning is undoubtedly the key aspect to attract the students aspiring to go for higher education through e-learning. So, quality of e-learning content must be brief, precise, up to date and easily understandable so that it can be highly acceptable to the e-learning intended students. In this paper a model is anticipated with the objective to enhance the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of West Bengal through establishment of e-learning in higher education. We provided an initial content of any subject matter and propose a scheme to upgrade the initially uploaded content up to a certain extent by using a graph theory based feedback method.

Effective tourism website is a key to attract tourists from different parts of the world. Here we identify the factors of improving the effectiveness of website by considering it as a graph, where web pages including homepage are the nodes and hyperlinks are the edges between the nodes. In this model, the design constraints for building a tourism website are taken into consideration. Our objectives are to build a framework of an effective tourism website providing adequate level of information, service and also to enable the users to reach to the desired page by spending minimal loading time. In this paper an information hierarchy specifying the upper limit of outgoing link of a page has also been proposed. Following the hierarchy, the web developer can prepare an effective tourism website. Here loading time depends on page size and network traffic. We have assumed network traffic as uniform and the loading time is directly proportional with page size. This approach is done by quantifying the link structure of a tourism website. In this approach we also propose a page size distribution pattern of a tourism website.

Social network is the group of individuals who have common interest. Data mining has the greatest attention of research over the past decade. The machine learning field evolved from the broad field of artificial intelligence, in which the machine (computers) can be enabled to think or act as intelligent as humans. Classification is the machine learning problem in which the given dataset can be classified upon known classes. Social network has great impact in product marketing. In this paper we consider the classification as a social network problem. To prove this, we have taken a dataset and classify it using ID3 implementation. The dataset contains multivariate and multi - classes. The results obtained by classification are considered as social networks.

Department of Information Management Tainan Woman's College of Arts and Technology Taiwan R.O.C. Yu-Chuan Liu:is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Management at Tainan Women's University. Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the National Cheng Kung University of Taiwan in 1993 and served as the R&D manager and vice-president in mechanical and optoelectronics industries. Dr. Liu joined the faulty in 2002 and his research interests are in process control and management information system computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) and e-Business. Dr. Liu has published more than 25 technical articles in this area.

Fuzzy system has been known to provide a framework for handling uncertainties and imprecision by taking linguistic information from human experts. However, difficulties arise in determining effectively the fuzzy system configuration, i.e. , the number of rules, input and output membership functions. A neuro-fuzzy system design methodology by combining neural network and fuzzy logic is developed in this paper to adaptively adjust the fuzzy membership functions and dynamically optimize the linguistic-fuzzy rules. The structure of a five-layer feedforward network is shown to determine systematically the correct fuzzy logic rules, tune optimally (in the sense of local region) the parameters of the membership functions, and perform accurately the fuzzy inference. It is shown both numerically and experimentally that engineering applications of the neuro-fuzzy system to vibration control have been very successful.

Hydroelastic considerations in ship panel design

Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1994 he was a professor of ocean engineering for twenty-five years at the U.S. Naval Academy. In addition he has held full-time faculty positions at Swarthmore College Trinity College (Hartford) and the Catholic University of America. He was also a hydrodynamicist at the David Taylor Model Basin for more than four years. Prof. McCormick received his undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics from AmericanUniversity a masters degree in applied mechanics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Catholic University a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland. He has over 100 publications including two books in the areas of ocean engineering wave mechanics and ocean wave energy conversion. He has also edited two books dealing with ocean engineering. In addition he is co-editor of both the journal Ocean Engineering and the Elsevier book series in ocean engineering. Dr. Rameswar Bhattacharyya:is professor of naval architecture at the U.S. Naval Academy where he has served for twenty-six years and adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at The Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining the Naval Academy faculty he was a faculty member in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research experience includes ten years at both the Lubecker Flender-Werke and the Hamburg Ship Model Basin in Germany. His research has led to numerous publications including two books one in the area of ship dynamics and the other in the area of computer-aided ship design. Prof. Bhattacharyya received his undergraduate degree in naval architecture from the Indian Institute of Technology and his doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Hanover Germany. Panels and all other structural components of surface ships and submarines vibrate when the vessel is underway. The vibratory motions are primarily excited by the power plant. At operational (design) speeds, panels vibrate in their fundamental modes and those associated with their higher harmonic frequencies. The panel motions have rather well-defined energy spectra, which depend on both the structural design, position of the panel and the rotational speed of the single or multiple power plants. The panel motions will interact with the vortices in the adjacent turbulent boundary layer. The interaction can result in either an increase in the frictional drag or a decrease. Because of this, the argument is made that the designs of the panels and their support systems should include considerations of this hydroelastic effect.

Can a Negotiation Support System Help a Purchasing Manager?

His research interests include the development of effective information systems applications.

The computer has become a useful tool for purchasing managers in administering contracts and in daily operations. Additionally, computer support for contract negotiations may also be provided. This article investigates the use of a computerized Negotiation Support System, or NSS, as an aid to a purchasing manager, and to the sales manager with whom he or she is dealing, in a typical industrial buying/selling negotiation. After reviewing the results of three prior studies using student subjects, the article reports on an empirical study — using purchasing managers as subjects — designed to test the effectiveness of an early version of an NSS. In this laboratory test of the NSS, the managers arrived at better contracts (higher joint outcomes and more balanced contracts) in less time when provided with the NSS. From the results of the study and the comments of NSS users, a number of implications for practicing purchasing managers are identified. The article concludes with suggestions about which organizations should develop an NSS and how they should begin the development effort.

Dr. Field's technical interests are in the areas of computers and microprocessor applications. He is the co-author of a John Wiley textMicroprogramming and Computer Architecture.

Material for a computer architecture class based on four progressively more complex microprogrammed circuits is described. The circuits and their associated microassemblers and simulators are discussed. Interestingly, the simulators allow students to understand the workings of the hardware more fully than is possible using the hardware alone.

Applying multimedia technology to undergraduate engineering laboratories

Elsherbeni:received an honorary BS degree in Electronics and Communications an honorary BS degree in Applied Physics and a Meng degree in Electrical Engineering all from Cairo University Egypt in 1976 1979 and 1982 respectively and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Manitoba University Canada in 1987. From January to August 1987 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Electrical Engineering Department University of Manitoba. He joined the faculty at the University of Mississippi in 1987 as an assistant professor and advanced to the rank of associate professor in 1991. His professional interests include microstrip transmission lines and antennas scattering and diffraction numerical techniques and computer applications for electromagnetic education. Dr. Elsherbeni is a senior member of IEEE and a member of Commission B of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). His honorary memberships include the Electromagnetics Academy and the Scientific Sigma Xi Society. Mark D. Tew:obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering with highest honors in 1971 and an MS in Electrical Engineering in 1973 from the University of Mississippi. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a TRW Doctoral Fellow and received the PhD in 1979. He joined the University of Mississippi in 1979 and was appointed associate professor in 1986. His interests lie in improving undergraduate laboratories through the incorporation of computer-aided data acquisition and introduction of multimedia. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of several honorary societies.

This article presents efforts to improve the presentation of material in high frequency, microwave, and electronics laboratories using multimedia technology. A crowded undergraduate curriculum leaves little time to dwell on difficult concepts in these areas of study, yet the laboratory experience is enhanced by greater understanding. A moderate or small-sized electrical engineering department is well suited for a one-on-one approach to teaching where close faculty—student interaction serves to fill many student needs. Even in this environment, better visualization tools may increase learning by reinforcing material introduced in the classroom. This project uses multimedia to enhance instruction and presentation in the high frequency, microwave, and electronics laboratories.
