With the widespread computerization in business, government, and science, the efficient and effective discovery of interesting information from large databases becomes essential. Previous studies on data mining have been focused on the discovery of knowledge at single conceptual level, either at the primitive level or at a rather high conceptual level. This paper presents an algorithm based on the AFOPT algorithm for multilevel databases that uses the benefits of multileveled databases, by using the information gained by studying items from one concept level for the study of the items from the following concept levels.

Microwave reflection tomographic array for damage detection of civil structures

Microwave tomographic imaging technology using a bifocusing operator has been developed in order to detect the internal voids/objects inside concrete structures. The imaging system consists of several cylindrical or planar array antennas for transmitting and receiving signals, and a numerical focusing operator is applied to the external signals both in transmitting and in receiving fields. An imaging algorithm using numerical focusing operator was developed, which allows the recovery of a two-dimensional object from its scattered field. Numerical simulation demonstrated that a subsurface image can be successfully reconstructed by using the proposed tomographic imaging technology. For the experimental verification, a prototype planar antenna array was fabricated and tested on a concrete specimen.

Resolving Structural Transfer Ambiguity in Chinese-to-Korean Machine Translation

We propose a new prototype Chinese-to-Korean machine translation system called TOTAL-CK, a prototype transfer based MT system designed for the large-scale practical domain. TOTAL-CK consists of the components of analysis, transfer, and generation. In this paper, we mainly discuss the transfer issues resulting from stylistic structural differences between Chinese and Korean. The dependency grammar formalism is employed for Chinese parsed trees and their equivalent Korean parsed trees. We deal with structural transfer ambiguities that arise when a given source language syntactic pattern is potentially translated by a number of different target language syntactic patterns. Also, structural transfer ambiguities are the major complex transfer problem appearing during dependency transferring, in an SVO pattern that most frequently occurs in Chinese sentences. There are three types of structural transfer ambiguity: transitive transfer, subject-governing transfer and verb-governing transfer. They are discovered by analyzing the ambiguity and the related formalism. Finally, we present a thesaurus-based disambiguation approach for dependency structural transfer, which is adopted in TOTAL-CK. Our approach achieves 94.6% in precision for SVO sentences and 93.5% for overall sentences.

Knowledge management (KM) is the process of leveraging organizational knowledge to deliver long‐term advantage to a business and is based on a business strategy that involves engineering various knowledge‐centric business processes and developing organization structures to support these. These, in turn, require technology to capture, codify, store, disseminate and reuse the knowledge. Successful deployment of KM is not a simple process. This paper suggests that a major reason for the failure of many KM projects is the absence of a well‐defined strategic plan to guide implementation. This paper discusses the strategic planning needs of the KM deployment process, and develops a framework that could be used specifically by engineering firms to guide the KM implementation process.

MPEG-4 Visual Texture Coding (VTC) was recently adopted as an image coding technique using a wavelet-based approach. For images with significant texture and sharp contrast, MPEG-4 VTC spreads the signal energy over several wavelet trees. To improve the coding efficiency of zerotree entropy coding, we propose a double transformation coding (DTC) approach. The wavelet trees are reorganized as a sequence of wavelet blocks, which are categorized into four groups where the similarity among the blocks within a group is increased. For each class, we use an adaptive Karhunen Loeve Transform (KLT) bases to predict the quantized AC coefficients of the same class. The classification process is based on the variances of the quantized DC coefficients considering the spatial orientation. Thus, the classification information can be computed at the decoder. At the same time, the property of continuous scalability is maintained using the new approach. For the same bitrate we found that the DTC achieved a coding gain over MPEG-4 VTC by about 0.5-1.0 dB in PSNR.

The information system outsourcing arena has recently seen the introduction of a new player – the Application Service Provider (ASP). ASPs are third-party companies that rent commonly available packaged software applications and related services. The model offers certain important characteristics that could result in important advantages to users. Some of these include: firms get access to world-class applications offering the same set of features as used by larger rivals, software developers are assured a recurring stream of revenue from their software products and upgrades, users are protected from the tribulations of upgrading and maintaining their software and *** this paper, we examine the emerging ASP model of providing software services to organisations. We then suggest a classification scheme for potential online ASP marketplaces and work on building a testable prototype for these marketplaces. We will use this testbed to study the influence of different attributes of clients and vendors on the services provided on the *** testbed can also help in developing deception-free protocols for the interactions of the marketplace with service providers. In an environment where marketplaces provide trust-mechanisms for service-delivery, it is necessary for the marketplace to ensure that service providers have the appropriate incentives and penalties to truthfully reveal their capabilities.

From 1996 to 1998 she was a Visiting Scientist Carnegie Mellon's Robot Learning Lab. Her research interests include artificial neural networks machine learning techniques and fuzzy logic. A class of artificial neural networks with a two-layer feedback topology to solve nonlinear discrete dynamic optimization problems is developed. Generalized recurrent neuron models are introduced. A direct method to assign the weights of neural networks is presented. The method is based on Bellmann's Optimality Principle and on the interchange of information which occurs during the synaptic chemical processing among neurons. A comparative analysis of the computational requirements is made. The analysis shows advantages of this approach as compared to the standard dynamic programming algorithm. The technique has been applied to several important optimization problems, such as shortest path and control optimal problems.

A technology overview for a proposed Navy surface combatant DC Zonal Electric Distribution System

While working on his degrees he has done extensive research fm P. C. Krause and Associates in electric drive modeling and simulation. Following post-doctorate work at Purdue he joined the staff at the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994 as an Assistant Professor in the area of Power Systems. Robert W. Ashton:graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S.E.E. in 1982. He worked for Unisys Corporation as a Component Engineer until returning to school in 1986. He received his M.S.E.E. in 1989 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He earned a Ph.D. in the area of power electronics while a fellow with Northeast Utilities in Connecticut. He currently holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey GI.

The U.S. Navy is currently investigating the implementation of a DC Zonal Electric Distribution System (DC ZEDS) as a component of an Integrated Power System (IPS) for the next generation of surface combatant. In replacing the current ac radial distribution system, significant gains can be realized in terms of survivability, weight, manning and cost. DC ZEDS is predicated on having starboard and port de busses feeding electrical zones delineated by watertight bulkhead compartments. The main bus de voltage is stepped down within the zone and then converted to three-phase ac and lower voltage de by additional power converters. Due to the large interconnection of tightly-regulated power converters in a stiffly-connected system, negative input impedance effects create the possibility of unwanted resonances. In this paper the authors describe the rationale for the de zonal system, characterize the key components, and highlight the stability issues.
