Software maintenance is usually the most expensive phase of the software life-cycle, Program understanding and impact-of-change analysis are two of the major activities during this phase, In this paper, we describe attributed program dependency graphs (APDGs), a model to store information derived from the program source code and ease construction of tools for software maintenance, We show how the model can be used for interactive view generation and doing two kinds of impact-of-change analysis-incremental and comparison-oriented. Incremental change analysis uses APDGs and a Rule Base to provide a way for the user to analysis the effect of proposed well-defined changes, Comparison-oriented change analysis allows a user to generate structural semantic differences between two versions of a subsystem after an arbitrary sequence of changes, We also introduce SCAN, a prototype collection of loosely integrated tools based on the APDG model and describe our experiences with the system.

Dr. Wilson is a member of the Human Factors & Ergonomic Society Transportation Research Forum American Society of Engineering Managers American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. He is a CG licensed First Assistant Engineer an FAA Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane and Certified Professional Ergonomist. Michael E. Pollard:is currently President of Chevy Chase Technology Corporation a computer systems engineering firm located in Chevy Chase Maryland. Mr. Pollard graduated from Brandeis University in 1990 and served as a legislative assistant in the U.S. Senate concentrating on science and technology issues until early 1995. This article marks Mr. PollaRD's seventh publication in the field of science and technology.

Current technology centric U.S. maritime manning reduction trends have led both the maritime industry and government policy makers to revisit the safety issue. This paper identifies the manning processes, examines, and assesses process boundaries, and evaluates relevant safety issues. This examination finds that ample opportunities exist for both improved ship safety and proper business process re-engineering, but that current applications of technology will yield dangerous results unless human factors or ergonomics is included.

Since 1994 he has been a researcher at the National Technical University of Athens Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Telecommunications Laboratory. His interests include data mobile and integrated services networks. Panagiotis P. Demestichas was born in Athens Greece in 1967. He received the Diploma in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) Athens in 1993. At present he is a research assistant at NTUA working towards his Ph.D. dissertation. He participated in the BRITE/EURAM-EURATN and in the RACE-TOMQAT and MONET projects. His research interests are in the areas of broadband and mobile networks queueing theory algorithms and complexity theory. He is a Member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. Miltiades E. Anagnostou was born in Athens in 1958. He received the Electrical Engineers Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1981. During the period 1981–1987 he was a teaching assistant at NTUA. In 1987 he received his Ph.D. in the area of computer networks. In 1987–1989 he served the Greek army in the Air Force Research and Development Center. In 1989–1991 he was a Lecturer and since 1991 he has been an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Division Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the NTUA. The reason why cellular mobile telephony systems exist is that they allow frequency reuse. Dynamic allocation algorithms improve the network efficiency and the service quality. Dynamic allocation is closely related to the following instantaneous allocation problem: given a number of channels (frequencies), a cell structure and the number of calls to be accommodated in each cell, find the optimum allocation of channels to cells subject to restrictions concerning the distance of cells, where the same frequency can be reused. In this paper we formulate and solve this problem by showing that it can be reduced to a 0-1 programming problem. Finally we present results, and draw subsequent conclusions.

Use of artificial neural networks: predicting trickling filter performance in a municipal wastewater treatment plant

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are used as an alternativefunction approximation tool for predicting the performance of tricklingfilter treatment process in a municipal wastewater treatment plant,Solon, Ohio, USA, which uses a trickling filter followed by an activatedsludge process. The treatment plant had an average monthly inflow flowrate of 2.92 mgd (million gallons per day). The average raw, settled,and final BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) was 449, 235 and 4.8 mg/l,respectively, while the corresponding value for TSS (total suspendedsolids) was 296, 131, and 6.1 mg/l. The overall removal efficiency forBOD and TSS was 98.93 per cent and 97.95 per cent respectively. The bestANN model for predicting the trickling filter effluent BOD and TSS has aprediction error of 31.45 per cent and 32.54 per cent respectively. Thenumber of input variables, as well as number of nodes in hidden layerseemed not to have a definite effect on the prediction error for the ANNmodel. The prediction errors obtained with ANN models were lower thanthose obtained by multiple regression analysis.

ISDN LOOP EXTENSION USING A MID-SPAN AMPLIFIER

作者： ERKER, GJ DODDS, DE KRZYMIEN, WA David E. Dodds was born in Saskatoon Canada in 1945. He received the B. Eng. and MSc. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan in 1966 and 1968 respectively. He worked with Bell Northern Research (Ottawa) on PBX design in 1969 1972 and 1978. Since 1969 he has been with the University of Saskatchewan where he is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering. He teaches courses in electronics and communications and also presents short courses on the fundamentals of telephony. Current research interests are in data transmission signal processing architecture and frame synchronization for PCM and spread spectrum systems. He has been granted five patents relating to commercial products in delta-modulation telephone line interfacing and computer data transmission. In 1986 he was on sabbatical leave at BNR Inc. and worked with an ANSI committee on the standardization of FDDI-II a combined voice and data system. Mr. Dodds is a Registered Consulting Engineer in Saskatchewan. Witold A. Krzyden received his MSc. (Eng.) and Ph.D. degrees (both in Electrical Engineering) in 1970 and 1978 respectively from the Poznan Technical University in Poznan Poland. He was awarded the Minister's of Science and Technology Prize of Excellence for his Ph.D. thesis. From 1970 to 1978 he was a Research Engineer and Teaching Assistant and then from 1978 to 1980 an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Poznan Technical University. In 1980 he won a Dutch Government Research Fellowship at the Twente University of Technology in Enschede the Netherlands for the year of 1980/1981. In the following year of 1981/82 he was a Research Assistant Professor there. From 1982 to 1986 he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay Ontario Canada. In 1986 he joined the Univeristy of Alberta and Alberta Telecommunications Research Centre (now Telecommunications Research Laboratories or TRLabs) as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering. The 5.5 km range of the basic rate ISDN loop has been extended by using a negative impedance amplifier and by using a 2 wire/4 wire (2w/4w) amplifier. The negative impedance amplifier extends the range of the loop by 1.0 km, whereas the 2w/4w amplifier extends the range by 1.5 km at the expense of increased complexity. As part of the amplifer design, a resistor/capacitor network has been developed which closely matches the characteristic impedance of telephone cable. Error rate tests have been conducted using various lengths of cable and an operating ISDN line.

He obtained his B.A. Sc. and M.A.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Ottawa Ottawa Ontario Canada in 1987 and 1989 respectively. Mr So was a research engineer in the University of Ottawa from January 1989 to October 1991 his research interests included CAD techniques of microwave circuits and numerical methods for electromagnetic wave modelling. He specialized in the development of electromagnetic engineering CAD software and successfully implemented a number of electromagnetic wave simulators based on the two-dimensional and three-dimensional transmission-line matrix methods. From August 1990 to February 1991 he accompanied Professor W. J. R. Hoefer to Rome Italy and Sophia Antiopolas France. During that time he implemented a parallel version of the 3D-TLM simulator for the CM-2 Connection Machine using C-Star and X Windows Library. He is a research engineer and a Ph.D. student at the University of Victoria Victoria British Columbia Canada. He ported the 2D- and 3D-TLM simulators to DECmpp 1200 massively parallel computer using MPL C and C++. He also combined OSA90/hope a commercially available microwave CAD program with a 2D-TLM simulation module for geometry optimization using the Datapipe technique of OSA90/hope. Recently he has developed a distributed client-server computing technique for the TLM method this technique could accelerate the TLM simulation by more than an order of magnitude. Channabasappa Eswarappa received the M.Tech. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur India in 1983 and Ph. This paper describes the implementation of transmission-line matrix (TLM) method algorithms on a massively parallel computer (DECmpp 12000), the technique of distributed computing in the UNIX environment, and the combination of TLM analysis with Prony's method as well as with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) digital signal processing for electromagnetic field modelling. By combining these advanced computation techniques, typical electromagnetic field modelling of microwave structures by TLM analysis can be accelerated by a few orders of magnitude.

From January to August 1987 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Electrical Engineering Department University of Manitoba. He joined the faculty at the University of Mississippi in 1987 as an assistant professor and advanced to the rank of associate professor in 1991. His professional interests include microstrip transmission lines and antennas scattering and diffraction numerical techniques and computer applications for electromagnetic education. Dr. Elsherbeni is a senior member of IEEE and a member of Commission B of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). His honorary memberships include the Electromagnetics Academy and the Scientific Sigma Xi Society. Mark D. Tew:obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering with highest honors in 1971 and an MS in Electrical Engineering in 1973 from the University of Mississippi. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a TRW Doctoral Fellow and received the PhD in 1979. He joined the University of Mississippi in 1979 and was appointed associate professor in 1986. His interests lie in improving undergraduate laboratories through the incorporation of computer-aided data acquisition and introduction of multimedia. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of several honorary societies.

This article presents efforts to improve the presentation of material in high frequency, microwave, and electronics laboratories using multimedia technology. A crowded undergraduate curriculum leaves little time to dwell on difficult concepts in these areas of study, yet the laboratory experience is enhanced by greater understanding. A moderate or small-sized electrical engineering department is well suited for a one-on-one approach to teaching where close faculty—student interaction serves to fill many student needs. Even in this environment, better visualization tools may increase learning by reinforcing material introduced in the classroom. This project uses multimedia to enhance instruction and presentation in the high frequency, microwave, and electronics laboratories.

In order to solve the speed problem and shallow reasoning problem met in current research in fault diagnosis expert system, this paper presents a model based parallel fault diagnosis expert system for energy management systems (EMS). The Petri net model, which corresponds to the relationship between power system components and their protection systems, has been used for the inference in fault diagnosis. A multiagent parallel processing expert system, which is based on five transputers in Sun workstation, has been built for fault diagnosis purposes. The test results show that this expert system is not only fast but also has better performances. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Spacecraft attitude control is approached as a nonlinear control problem, the robustness quality of the genetic algorithm (GA)-optimized fuzzy logic (FL) control is demonstrated using a nonlinear model of the Space Station Freedom. The main components of the GA-optimized fuzzy controller (GAoFC) are the GA adaptive learning module, the objective function module, and the FC (fuzzy control) module. Performance of the nonlinear GAoFC is verified using a nonlinear simulation of the Space Station. We study cases of manually generated parameters rule set, GA-optimized parameters, and GA-optimized rules and parameters. Results presented substantiate the feasibility of using GA-optimized fuzzy controllers in robust nonlinear control of spacecraft.< >
