Green dream: A deep learning based real-time model for automatic waste segregation from video streams

In this fast-pacing world one of the substantial problems faced is the drastic increase in waste generation and ensuring efficient and rational management of waste. Recycling tasks reduce waste production, mitigate the environment and improve the whole nation’s prosperity in the future. Inappropriate handling and discarding of useless materials have led to the contamination of groundwater and defiled the land resources. Therefore, it is vital that the methods and processes involved in waste collection and segregation is examined as the present-day disposal system is inefficient, time consuming, cumbersome and not completely viable due to their large amount. The proposed model provides a way of solving the above stated problems by detecting, identifying and segregating the waste materials. The proposed system is an automated waste classifier which uses a deep learning-based object detection model to classify objects into different categories. Using YOLOv5, an object detection algorithm the waste can be identified successfully from the image taken with the help of a camera and classify them into categories. This result is then sent to a segregation unit which categorizes the waste into the designated bin by rotating the conveyor belt using a motor. The proposed model operated at a Mean Average Precision(mAP) of 0.726 and an F1-Score of 0.83. This method of segregation of waste will enable faster ways to recycle the waste and save time and resources.

Fresh, Mechanical and Durability Properties of Sustainable Cement Grouts Incorporating Dredged Materials from UAE Dams

The paper proposes the use of dam dredged materials (DDM) in the construction industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The used DDM in this study were collected from a prominent dam in UAE. Four cement grout mixes were prepared by replacing aggregates with the following percentages of DDM: 0%, 3%, 5% and 10%. The fresh, mechanical and durability performance of the grout mixes were examined. The slump and rheology of the prepared grout mixes were measured over two hours, with one-hour intervals between two successive measurements. The rheology was assessed by conducting shear flow and stress growth tests. Further, air content, fresh bulk density and initial setting time were measured for all mixes. The mechanical properties were evaluated through measuring the compressive strength and hardened density at 7, 28, 56 and 90 days. Additionally, shrinkage, electrical conductivity and electrical resistivity were measured to assess the durability of the prepared mixes. The results showed that the dam dredged materials enhanced the mechanical and durability of the tested grouts. For example, the 28-day strength increased by approximately 40% when DDM content was increased from 0% to 10%. Further, the DDM offset the shrinkage of the grouts, and shrinkage decreased with higher content of DDM. On the other hand, the cement grouts incorporating DDM were rated as medium resistance to chloride penetration after 90 days of curing. The cement grout mixes were implemented in two construction applications: tile adhesive and plaster. The samples for both applications showed favourable behaviour with no observed cracks after 11 months of exposure to harsh environmental conditions. The promising results of this study would contribute towards reducing the environmental impacts of dam dredged materials and preserving natural resources, leading to sustainable and economic benefits to the UAE.

The majority of roads in India are two-lane undivided in nature with a supreme heterogeneity in traffic composition. As there is a large variation in dynamic profile of each vehicle, a single unit is essential to estimate the roadway capacity. The Passenger Car Unit (PCU) values of different vehicle categories have significant impact on the estimated roadway capacity. To study this effect, Kolkata-Basanti highway and Howrah-Amta Road, two state highways in the eastern part of India having two lanes each, were selected. Kolkata-Basanti highway connects the rural regions of Sundarban with Kolkata whereas Howrah-Amta Road connects the Amta region with Kona Expressway in the district of Howrah. It has a considerable heterogeneity in traffic with large speed differentials among the vehicles. Greenshield’s linear model is applied to estimate the Capacity where the PCU values are determined by three different methods. These include the static PCU value from IRC 64 (1990), the concept of Dynamic PCU values as proposed by S. Chandra (2004) and the method suggested in Indo-HCM (2017). The analysis shows that there is a significant difference in the roadway capacity estimated using static PCU values from the other two methods. This may be attributed to the fact that the dynamism of the vehicles in the PCU value determination is not considered in the static PCU values listed in IRC 64 (1990).

Optimum Configuration of CFRP Composites for Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Beams Considering the Contact Constraint

In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted using ABAQUS to simulate and evaluate the response of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with different configurations of CFRP composites. The investigated parameters include: the number of layers of CFRP sheets, compressive strength of concrete, and orientation of CFRP sheets. The beams were 1500 mm long with cross-section dimensions of 100 x 200 mm, loaded as simply supported beams under three-point loading configuration. Concrete damaged plasticity model was chosen and the models were calibrated and validated properly. The nature of the contact between the CFRP composites and concrete was carefully evaluated in order to arrive at the optimum contact definition. The results showed that the performance of the beam was noticeably improved using up to three CFRP layers; any number of CFRP layers above three were ineffective. This indicates that it is important to optimize the number of sheets in a CFRP composite based on the beam dimensions and reinforcement to minimize the cost and avoid adversely affecting the ductility of the strengthened beam. Regarding the influence of compressive strength, the enhancement in the performance of the CFRP strengthened beams was pronounced when increasing the strength, however it was not significant. The use of U-shaped layout of CFRP composites was the most effective configuration. Finally, the use of shell to solid coupling contact constraint shows the least error while allowing relative movement between beam surface and CFRP composites.

A Novel Approach for Mammogram Enhancement using Nonlinear Unsharp Masking and L 0 Gradient Minimization

Mammography is an effective modality for detecting and diagnosing breast cancer. Mammogram enhancement is used to improve the local contrast of mammograms, such that lesions appear more visible in the enhanced image. This paper introduces two novel approaches for mammogram enhancement based on a new unsharp masking scheme, called nonlinear UM and L 0 Gradient Minimization, NLUM L 0 GMIN for detecting breast cancer at an early stage. Three different techniques are unified in the proposed method; i) a Nonlinear filtering process to enhance the fine details within a 3x3 local neighborhood, ii) an L 0 Gradient Minimization step globally preserving the high-contrast edges while suppressing low-contrast details seen as opaque fibrous tissues; and to obtain a detail mammogram after subtracting smoothed mammogram from the original mammogram, iii) Finally, an Unsharp masking technique combining detail mammogram with filtered mammogram passed through Non-linear filter, using PLIP operators which satisfy both Weber’s law and saturation characteristics of the human visual system.. An HVS-based decomposition scheme is used to analyse and visualize the malignant areas in the enhanced mammogram. The distinct arrangement of PLIP operators in the proposed framework has given rise to two methods NLUM L 0 GMINAUTO and NLUM L 0 GMIN, which outperforms NLUM method and other existing techniques for mammogram enhancement. The former is good at enhancing less-dense and medium-dense mammograms whereas the later enhances unseen masses within high-dense mammograms. Experimental results have stated the significance of the proposed method in effectively diagnosing breast cancer in comparison with the previous methods for mammogram enhancement. The mini-MIAS database has categorized mammograms as fatty, fatty-glandular and dense-glandular, which has helped us in focusing on enhancing images uniquely for each category. Recent developments in microarray data analysis and improvements in soft computing techniques have played a major role in the field of cancer classification. Classification and identification of cancer are very important as early cancer identification is highly useful for its treatment. Cancer diagnosis is challenging as microarray data has large number of genes. Many gene selection algorithms have been applied to effectively select the most promising gene subsets that can accurately identify cancer samples. In this paper, Mutual Information is used to select the informative genes and Feed Forward Neural Network is used to classify the genes. The proposed MI-ANN based gene selection and ANN classification are applied to classify multi-class microarray datasets. The obtained results show that the proposed method provides higher classification accuracy compared to existing methods. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Federated Cloud is a next generation cloud computing model which works towards a new dynamic scenario in smart ecosystems. It consolidates individual clouds together to form single large cloud to satisfy all on-demand requirements of the users. Federated cloud is currently facing many challenges including: monitoring of individual cloud services, maintaining service level agreement, fair load distribution, power usage etc. Hence, to address these challenges this paper presents a brokerage model “ Optimized Bit Matrix based Power Aware Load Distribution Policy for Federated Cloud (OBMPLP) ”. Presented model includes two novel concepts: Bit Matrix and Load Distribution Factor. Bit Matrix constructed by individual cloud members representing resource availability status and environment in executing the user’s request. Load Distribution Factor representing load distribution level at individual cloud. OBMPLP policy dispenses the incoming requests among multiple clouds by analyzing bits pattern and load distribution factor that not only performs fair load distribution among multiple clouds, but also improves response time, alleviate power consumption at each cloud and achieve better quality service. The performance of the proposed policy is evaluated and results demonstrate reduction in response time, optimized power consumption and fair distribution of load compared to existing approaches.
