computer vision, the automatic construction of scene descriptions from image input data, has just entered its second decade. Approaches have varied widely, especially in the amounts of symbolic, domain-dependent knowledge and inference that are incorporated into the vision process. Much current research addresses the extraction of physical properties of the scene (depth, surface orientation, reflectance) from images by using only a few general assumptions about the scene domain. Extraction of physical parameters is part of a hierarchy of operations needed to transform image input data to symbolic descriptions. Two other processes that serve as examples are stereo fusion and the partitioning of image phenomena into related groups. computer vision research is influencing theories of animal perception as well as the design of computing architectures for artificial intelligence.

Spline finite strip has been successfully applied in solving right plates and shells by Cheung et al in 1982. In this paper, the method is extended to the analysis of parallelogram plate. This extension still retains the banded nature of the spline finite strip and only small amount of extra computing effort is required. Further-more, the discretisation error of the above method is established theoretically as a general case for the spline finite strip method.

:Abstract:The auditing of results produced by computer-basedFinancial Information Systemsrequires that auditors be able to evaluate the internal controls of such systems. Because of the integrated nature of the components in current large systems, this has proven to be a quite formidable task. We propose the simplification of such evaluations through the incorporation,during the initial design of the system, of the sorts of basic control disciplines which are used in manual systems. Our approach involves the use of a powerful Authorization Mechanism control environment (based on computerscience techniques for authorization and protection) to specify and enforce such control disciplines in a manner which is easily verifiable during the audit process.

:Abstract:Users must understand themeaningof a database before they can intelligently interpret the data in it. We explore the problem of making databases selfdescriptive. We first examine the levels of semantics of data by analogy to the area of programming languages. Next, we consider severalsemantic data models, which are formal languages for conceptual data description, and how a semantic description can be linked to the objects in a database. We discuss the advantages of making a semantic description part of a database itself and the types of application programs that would use that description. In particular, we focus onpique, a high-level relational query language that uses such semantic information.

Integrated Development Environments (IDES) are presented as a unified set of information system development concepts, techniques, and computer-aided tools. An IDE consists of both a complete and unified development methodology and set of computer aids that support use of the methodology. The need for IDES and their characteristics are reviewed. The PLEXSYS-84 IDE is reviewed in relation to these needs and characteristics. ABSTRACT: Diagnostic ultrasound of the pulse-echo imaging type is used in at least 25 per cent of pregnancies, and Doppler continuous wave ultrasound, as employed in external electronic fetal monitors, is used in nearly all pregnancies. Diagnostic ultrasound energy levels are from 0.1 to 40 mW/cm 2 . These intensity levels depend on the characteristics of the ultrasonic beam and temporal exposure. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine states that…“there have been as of October, 1982 no independently confirmed significant biological effects in mammalian tissues exposed to intensities below 100 mW/cm 2 .” Some of the animal studies reviewed by the AIUM to reach this conclusion are discussed.
