To assess the extent of the impact upon housing prices of the introduction of a modern suburban rapid transit service, a two-way unbalanced analysis of variance model is estimated with residential sales price data. Inflationary and time stable neighborhood effects are accounted for in this manner. The first term of the singular decomposition of the interaction matrix summarizes the interaction, and may indicate the nature of the impact. Since the residuals from the additive model are too dispersed and negatively skewed to be normally distributed, the application of outlier-editing and robust estimation procedures is discussed. Wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) was grown under controlled environmental conditions for 47 days in two experiments to examine responses to low aeration beginning at various stages of growth, and to determine whether an interaction between temperature and soil aeration status is measurable in wheat. In both experiments oxygen was eliminated from the soil beginning at three different times in the growth cycle. In the second experiment the wheat was subjected to 36 hours of heat stress (42 C) on the 23rd day of growth. There was a trend toward greater water use with low soil aeration. The root:shoot ratio was significantly decreased by poor aeration in the experiment without heat treatment; all three low-aeration treatments exhibit essentially the same root:shoot ratio despite different treatment starting times, which indicates that the duration of the low oxygen treatment necessary to alter the root:shoot ratio is relatively short. Interaction of low aeration and heat stress sharply reduces root weight and increases water use per dry weight plant tissue produced, with the effect generally more dramatic with low aeration for longer periods of time. After only a brief period of treatment all characteristics measured, except root:shoot ratio, were significantly affected by heat stress. The effects are partially interpreted in terms of increased respiration rate, leading to degradation of cytoplasm as a result of induced oxygen scarcity.

An experiment was carried out under laboratory conditions to find out the critical bulk density and seed placement depths for upland rice seedling emergence. Aluminum cylinders were used to accomplish various combinations of bulk densities and depths of seed placement by compacting soil at moisture content of 9%. Seedling emergences was observed till the 10th day after sowing in a constant temperature incubator of 35 C. Depths down to 8 cm with 1.6 g/cc or 0.7 hg/cm2 pressures and lower densities and pressures were not limiting for seedling emergence when moisture was above field capacity. Depths beyond 8 cm with these densities and below 5 cm with 1.7 and 1.8 g/cc bulk densities seem to be limiting. The pressure of 2.8 hg/cm2 at 10 cm depth became so critical that the emergence ceased totally. The mechanical impedance or the increased soil strength with increasing bulk densities affected seedling emergence adversely.

The natural mission of Computational science is to tackle all sorts of human problems and to work out intelligent automata aimed at alleviating the b- den of working out suitable tools for solving complex problems. For this reason Computationalscience,thoughoriginatingfromtheneedtosolvethemostch- lenging problems in science and engineering (computational science is the key player in the ?ght to gain fundamental advances in astronomy, biology, che- stry, environmental science, physics and several other scienti?c and engineering disciplines) is increasingly turning its attention to all ?elds of human activity. In all activities, in fact, intensive computation, information handling, kn- ledge synthesis, the use of ad-hoc devices, etc. increasingly need to be exploited and coordinated regardless of the location of both the users and the (various and heterogeneous) computing platforms. As a result the key to understanding the explosive growth of this discipline lies in two adjectives that more and more appropriately refer to Computational science and its applications: interoperable and ubiquitous. Numerous examples of ubiquitous and interoperable tools and applicationsaregiveninthepresentfourLNCSvolumescontainingthecontri- tions delivered at the 2004 International Conference on Computational science and its Applications (ICCSA 2004) held in Assisi, Italy, May 14–17, 2004.

This ?ve-volume set was compiled following the 2006 International Conference on Computational science and its Applications, ICCSA 2006, held in Glasgow, UK, during May 8–11, 2006. It represents the outstanding collection of almost 664 refereed papers selected from over 2,450 submissions to ICCSA 2006. Computational science has ?rmly established itself as a vital part of many scienti?c investigations, a?ecting researchers and practitioners in areas ranging from applications such as aerospace and automotive, to emerging technologies such as bioinformatics and nanotechnologies, to core disciplines such as ma- ematics, physics, and chemistry. Due to the shear size of many challenges in computational science, the use of supercomputing, parallel processing, and - phisticated algorithms is inevitable and becomes a part of fundamental theore- cal research as well as endeavors in emerging ?elds. Together, these far-reaching scienti?c areas contributed to shaping this conference in the realms of state-- the-art computational science researchand applications, encompassing the fac- itating theoretical foundations and the innovative applications of such results in other areas.
