Unveiling deceit: A computer vision-based approach to detect lies from facial expressions

Polygraph tests monitor heart rate and pulse for truth determination but aren’t fully reliable. Face based deception detection systems are noninvasive and are more convenient. The proposed system uses computer Vision to monitor eye blink rate, gaze direction, lip compression, and pupil dilation to determine truth accuracy in real-time. The number of frames with a threshold value lower than the Eye-Aspect-Ratio (EAR) constant determines the eye blink count. The pupil coordinates are used to track the eye gaze direction. The eye centroid to iris contour maximum distance tracks pupil dilation. Lip compression is determined by measuring the distance between the mean of upper and lower lip landmarks. The weighted sum method is used to find the lie index from the obtained features. The true positive rate (TPR) and false positive rate (FPR) at various threshold values is calculated and an ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve is plotted using these values. The point on the curve with the highest TPR and lowest FPR determines the optimal threshold for the lie detection system. This method allows customization of the system’s performance to meet specific requirements.

Keyword search in videos is a technique that allows for efficient search and retrieval of specific moments within a video. This is accomplished by using speech recognition technology to convert audio from the video into text. This text can be compared with the visual content of each frame in the video using optical character recognition (OCR) technology. By iterating through each frame and comparing the audio and visual text, matches can be identified and the relevant parts of the video can be quickly accessed using the corresponding timestamps. We use a video analysis tool or library that has the ability to extract timestamps from a video file. These tools can be used to create a list of timestamps for all the frames in a video, which can then be used to quickly access specific moments in the v ideo. This technique can be useful in a variety of applications, such as media search, video editing, and video surveillance.

Contemporary computer vision systems are typically trained to recognize a limited set of predetermined object categories. This restricted type of supervision limits their applicability and generalization since additional labeled data is needed to indicate any other visual concept. A potential approach that leverages a broader source of supervision involves learning directly from raw text about images. The proposed solution involves implementing a multimodal search in a fashion store using the Contrastive Language Image Pretraining (CLIP) model, which enables vector-based search rather than syntax-based search. CLIP improves product visibility and assists users in obtaining better search results that match their preferences. It is demonstrated that a simple pre-training task of predicting the corresponding image for a given caption is an effective and scalable technique for learning state-of-the-art image representations from scratch using a dataset of (image, text) pairs collected from the internet. Natural language is employed during pre-training to refer to learned visual concepts or describe new ones, enabling zero-shot transfer of the model to downstream tasks. Integration with clustering techniques on the vector space further enhances CLIP’s capabilities, facilitating efficient and accurate retrieval of items. By grouping similar fashion items based on visual similarity and semantic relationships, the system enables efficient and accurate retrieval of relevant items. The model can generalize effectively to most tasks without requiring any training on a specific dataset and is frequently on par with a fully supervised baseline.

Lip reading involves deciphering and scrutinizing a speaker’s lip movements to understand spoken words or phrases. The diverse factors like speech pace, intensity, and similar character sequences pose significant challenges to lip reading. This study introduces a lip-reading model tailored for video data containing variable-length sequence frames without audio. Initially, we isolate the lip region from each facial image within the video sequence and amalgamate them into a unified image. Subsequently, a twelve-layer convolutional neural network with two layers of batch normalization is constructed to train the model and extract visual information. This approach aims to mitigate both internal and external disparities encompassing traits such as speaker accent, lighting conditions, picture frames, speaking tempo, and posture. By leveraging extensive data, the model demonstrates the capability to accurately anticipate complete words.

In this study, the use of a U-Net segmentation model is measured for the accurate detection of congenital heart abnormalities in newborn ultrasound pictures. The technique includes U-Net model training, sophisticated picture preprocessing, as well as exhaustive dataset gathering. As a result of the model's considerable accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, it has the potential to become a crucial diagnostic tool. A thorough analysis found both advantages, such as reliable performance, and disadvantages, which include the requirement for a larger and more varied dataset. Enlarging the dataset, addressing equipment variability, real-time clinical application, multidisciplinary cooperation, and ethical issues, including model improvement are among the key recommendations. In order to promote newborn healthcare, future work will require ongoing model development, real-time clinical integration, and ethical adherence. The work advances the development of accurate diagnostics in newborn care.

In order to meet the world's future energy demand, alternative renewable green energy supplies must be widely promoted. Among all DERs, the most prevalent is Solar PV for a number of important reasons. In this study, the authors analyze several elements of the Single-Phase Solar Photovoltaic Rooftop System with MATLAB. In order to analyze the characteristics of the output current, a new grid synchronization methodology has been devised. For maximum power tracking, the INC control technique has been adopted. The output of the solar DC power system has been synchronized with the grid through hysteresis current loop control. Extensive testing verifies the practicality of the proposed power grid model and promising outcomes and results. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study focuses on the advancements of characterization of unsaturated expansive soils which would allow better prediction of its swelling and mechanical behaviours. The paper has been divided into three parts. Firstly, a novel model is developed by considering two micro-soil parameters, soil-specific surface area and internal pore size distribution, to predict the natural swelling in expansive clayey soils. The model was validated by comparing the predictions with experimental results for eight soils. Secondly, the paper deals with the diffused-double-layer (DDL) theory-related electrostatic forces from individual clay minerals of expansive soils and their influence on soil swelling. A DDL-based model was also developed, which was validated for swell prediction for fourteen expansive soils. A good correlation was observed for both models when the results were compared with experimental results. Finally, the paper demonstrated the use of vapour pressure technique to control suction beyond 5 MPa for performing suction-controlled repeated load triaxial (RLT) test at high suction state. This novel technique mitigates the limitation of axis-translation technique for maintaining suction till the air-entry-value (AEV) of the ceramic disk. These new models and unsaturated laboratory testing techniques would aid in better characterization of expansive soils in their unsaturated state. This would also provide accurate prediction of swell and stiffness behaviours of soils, thereby reducing the uncertainties in the design of civil infrastructure built on expansive soils. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

BACKGROUND: The ambient assisted living (AAL) market is rapidly becoming fundamental to the delivery of health and social care services for the elderly. Worldwide many different steps have been taken to increase the engagement of older adults with these technologies. Much of this work has focused on the development of novel digital services that increase wellbeing or tackle social challenges. AIM: The aim of the study was to identify and describe the demands for AAL-services from the perspective of older adults. We also examine the challenges and needs of the ambient assisted living market using a needs based approach. METHOD: An exploratory case study was conducted with an aim to capture information about older adults' demands for AAL services. A survey was used to collect the data. The survey study respondents validated the results. RESULTS: The results of the study indicate that the area of AAL needs be studied from a multiple-sided market perspective. Our research suggests there is a need to describe and understand the factors that facilitate or constrain the implementation of services with focus on health and social care. There is also a need to describe and analyze the relationship between policy and practice and its effects on the AAL market. It is necessary to capture expressed demand, to identify market challenges at the macro level and to be able to understand how services should operate and serve older adults in practice. Such research is critical to the development of guidance for policy makers, suppliers and service providers. DISCUSSION: Older adults are asking for intelligent, assistive living solutions that help them to continue to live independent lives and remain socially included in their networks, associations, and communities. The diagnosis of many diseases involves invasive detection methods, which are both painful and stressing for patients. In the last decades, the ever-growing development in electronic nose (E-Nose) technology made them great candidates for non-invasive disease detection methods. Such devices mimic the human olfactory system through a set of sensors which produce signals that can be associated with diseases. Recently, a class of low-cost and innovative ionogel sensors, developed by our group demonstrated their full applicability in E-Nose systems, opening a new and promising approach to the field. However, the operation of such sensor needs a background calibration phase which relies on the correct characterization and parameterization of the corresponding electrical sensor *** paper proposes a model characterization methodology based on a set of frequency responses acquisitions of the sensor, under several humidity conditions. To obtain a flexible acquisition tool capable of acquiring accurate results, an analog front-end (AFE) circuit to interface with the interdigitated electrode (IDE) sensors is presented. Such AFE circuit is fully implemented using a programmable system-on-a-chip (PSoC), helping to reduce system size and cost. Lastly, a comparison between the electrical model and data acquired with the proposed system is presented. © 2022 IEEE.
