Korany:received the BS degree in Electrical Engineering (Electronics Section) from the University of Alexandria Egypt in 1971 the MS degree in Electrical Engineering (Computer Section) from Ain Shams University Cairo Egypt in 1977 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (Digital Systems) from Florida Institute of Technology U.S.A. in 1982. He is currently an associate professor of Computer Science at the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research University of Alexandria. His research interests are in data communications and multimedia applications computer networks image processing and pattern recognition. Abdel-Latif A. Abdel-Bary:obtained the BEng degree in Electronics Technology from Arab Maritime Transport Academy in 1986. In 1995 he obtained the MSc degree in Information Technology from the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research Alexandria University. His current research interests include ICAL hypermedia and automatic programming.

In this article a multimedia computer-assisted learning (MCAL) system is presented. The major objective of this work was to investigate the potential of using such systems as tools for transferring instructional course information through various types of computer media as opposed to the classic CAL systems. The philosophy and techniques employed to design the system are investigated. Usage of the implemented system and its merits have been illustrated through its application to teach engineering students and technicians the theory and concepts of marine radar. System design, implementation, test, and revision phases are presented and discussed.

作者： DeHaemer, DJ Dr. Michael J. DeHaemer:is Director of the World Technology Evaluation Center and the Japanese Technology Evaluation Center at Loyola College in Baltimore. He has directed more than a dozen studies of technologies in foreign countries under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation ARPA Departments of Energy and Commerce and other agencies. He has a continuing interest in assessing foreign technologies in comparison to the United States.—-On the faculty of the Sellinger School of Business at Loyola College Dr. DeHaemer is a former department chairman and an associate professor of information systems and decision sciences. He teaches the strategic use of information technology and human-computer interface design. His research includes user performance with automated speech recognition systems for computers and business applications of artificial intelligence. Dr. DeHaemer completed an earlier career as a submarine officer including command of a ballistic missile submarine. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Master's degree in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School. He has an M.B.A. an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A team of experts, assembled by the World technology Evaluation Center, visited twenty-five locations in Russia and Ukraine to observe the state of undersea technologies. Academic sites, basic research institutes, industrial development laboratories, and oceanographic operating bases were visited. The report highlights specific technologies that support research submersibles;and critiques the strengths and weaknesses of the ocean technologies establishment. Russia and Ukraine were found to have a number of strengths, especially in test facilities, a large fleet of surface and submersible research vessels, and highly educated and qualified engineers and scientists. Although political and economic conditions need to be over-come, there is motivation for many cooperative commercial or research ventures with both government institutes and new private companies in Russia and Ukraine.

ISDN LOOP EXTENSION USING A MID-SPAN AMPLIFIER

作者： ERKER, GJ DODDS, DE KRZYMIEN, WA David E. Dodds was born in Saskatoon Canada in 1945. He received the B. Eng. and MSc. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan in 1966 and 1968 respectively. He worked with Bell Northern Research (Ottawa) on PBX design in 1969 1972 and 1978. Since 1969 he has been with the University of Saskatchewan where he is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering. He teaches courses in electronics and communications and also presents short courses on the fundamentals of telephony. Current research interests are in data transmission signal processing architecture and frame synchronization for PCM and spread spectrum systems. He has been granted five patents relating to commercial products in delta-modulation telephone line interfacing and computer data transmission. In 1986 he was on sabbatical leave at BNR Inc. and worked with an ANSI committee on the standardization of FDDI-II a combined voice and data system. Mr. Dodds is a Registered Consulting Engineer in Saskatchewan. Witold A. Krzyden received his MSc. (Eng.) and Ph.D. degrees (both in Electrical Engineering) in 1970 and 1978 respectively from the Poznan Technical University in Poznan Poland. He was awarded the Minister's of Science and Technology Prize of Excellence for his Ph.D. thesis. From 1970 to 1978 he was a Research Engineer and Teaching Assistant and then from 1978 to 1980 an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Poznan Technical University. In 1980 he won a Dutch Government Research Fellowship at the Twente University of Technology in Enschede the Netherlands for the year of 1980/1981. In the following year of 1981/82 he was a Research Assistant Professor there. From 1982 to 1986 he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay Ontario Canada. The 5.5 km range of the basic rate ISDN loop has been extended by using a negative impedance amplifier and by using a 2 wire/4 wire (2w/4w) amplifier. The negative impedance amplifier extends the range of the loop by 1.0 km, whereas the 2w/4w amplifier extends the range by 1.5 km at the expense of increased complexity. As part of the amplifer design, a resistor/capacitor network has been developed which closely matches the characteristic impedance of telephone cable. Error rate tests have been conducted using various lengths of cable and an operating ISDN line.

The degradation of the spatial resolution in frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) reflectometry due to the nonlinearity in the optical frequency sweep are discussed both experimentally and theoretically. The response lag in the optical frequency change of a laser diode behind the injection current change was experimentally measured, showing that there were several time constants in the optical frequency response. The interference signals in the FMCW reflectometry were theoretically calculated by taking account of the response lag. From these calculations, the beat frequency becomes low just after the turning point of the optical frequency sweep;this is due to the response lag in the optical frequency response. As a result, the spectrum of the interference signal is spread out toward the low frequency region and spatial resolution is degraded. Moreover, the spatial resolution is seriously degraded with increasing the diagnosing distance due to the nonlinearity in the optical frequency sweep. The calculated results agree well with the measured results.

From 1982 to 1990 he was appointed as an assistant lecturer. lecturer and associate professor respectively in the electrical engineering department of Southwest Jiaotong University. In order to solve the speed problem and shallow reasoning problem met in current research in fault diagnosis expert system, this paper presents a model based parallel fault diagnosis expert system for energy management systems (EMS). The Petri net model, which corresponds to the relationship between power system components and their protection systems, has been used for the inference in fault diagnosis. A multiagent parallel processing expert system, which is based on five transputers in Sun workstation, has been built for fault diagnosis purposes. The test results show that this expert system is not only fast but also has better performances. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Providing realistic opposing forces is critical to the successful use of military training simulations. Unfortunately, a number of issues can make the manual control of realistic opposing forces difficult or unattainable, This paper explores these issues while discussing how Automatic Interactive Targets (AITs) can assist Training Exercise Controllers (TECs) in providing validated and realistic opposing forces in highly interactive situations. The features of the prototype Remote AIT Processing System (RAPS) are used to demonstrate how an AIT system can be designed to meet TEC requirements for automated entities, RAPS can provide remote control of AITs for existing or new systems while providing sufficient features to allow a TEC to appropriately select and control AITs for individual training exercises and crew proficiencies.

In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

With the increasing availability of power transistor switches, PWM controlled rectifiers can efficiently and economically be employed in low and medium power applications of DC drive systems. In this paper, steady‐state modelling and solution of a uniform pulse‐width modulated single‐phase AC‐to‐DC converter‐fed DC motor drive is accomplished. The developed model is presented in a generalized form that is applicable irrespective of the number of pulses per supply half‐cycle. Measured and predicted parameters are shown to be very close and the model is proved to be efficient and accurate. Both continuous and discontinuous modes of operation are covered, and critical operating conditions at which the system moves from one mode to the other are thoroughly investigated. The effects of the armature inductance‐to‐resistance ratio and the chopping frequency on these critical conditions, load and line harmonics, and on the ripple contents of the armature current are also thoroughly investigated. Bamberger:was born on January 30 1965 in Buenos Aires Argentina. He received his B.E.E and PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1986 and 1990 respectively. Currently Dr. Bamberger is an assistant professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University. Dr. Bamberger's research program is focused on the design implementation and application of multidimensional multirate filter banks subband image and video compression analysis of nonstationary data and application of digital signal processing techniques in the design of analog and mixed-mode integrated circuits. Dr. Bamberger is the founder and director of the Signal Processing Instructional Facility (SPIF Lab) at Washington State University. The SPIF Lab features interactive multimedia-based tools for teaching concepts related to linear systems theory. Dr. Bamberger is active in developing multimedia-based instructional laboratories for a variety of other topics as well. In addition to his teaching and research programs Dr. Bamberger is an associate editor for theIEEE Transactions on Signal Processingand a member of the editorial board forComputer Applications in Engineering Education. Dr. Bamberger is also advisor to the WSU Student Branch of the IEEE and assistant director of the WSU Cougar Marching Band. Dr. Bamberger is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Eta Kappa Nu Tau Beta Pi and Kappa Kappa Psi.

The Signal Processing Instructional Facility (SPIF Lab) is an experiment in using in interactive multimedia for teaching concepts related to linear systems theory and signal processing. The goals of the SPIF lab are to augment, enhance, and interconnect sophomore, junior, and senior level courses with the common thread of linear systems and transforms by unifying the experimentation medium. In this fashion, physical phenomenon is returned to the forefront of engineering education. The laboratory features powerful Mathematica Notebooks (a form of hypertext) and interactive applications that use dedicated DSP microprocessors.

Power System Stabilizers (PSS) superimposed to the basic control system of an HVDC link supplying a weak AC system, in order to enhance its frequency regulation action, are proposed. To decrease the AC voltage sensitivity at the inverter side, the basic control system of the HVDC link is proposed to operate with the rectifier under Minimum Ignition Angle (MIA) control and the inverter under Constant Current (CC) control. Inputs to the PSS are the frequency and the AC voltage deviations at the inverter side and their constant parameters are calculated using modal control technique. Detailed simulation results for a practical integrated AC/DC system are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed control scheme. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
