Steady‐state modelling of a uniform pulse‐width modulated single‐phase AC‐to‐DC converter‐fed DC motor drive

He obtained the M.Sc. degree in Power Electronics and Systems and the PhD degree in Power Electronics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) Manchester/GB in 1983 and 1986 respectively. In 1986 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering. Jordan University as an Assistant Professor. In 1991 became an Associate Professor at the same department. With the increasing availability of power transistor switches, PWM controlled rectifiers can efficiently and economically be employed in low and medium power applications of DC drive systems. In this paper, steady‐state modelling and solution of a uniform pulse‐width modulated single‐phase AC‐to‐DC converter‐fed DC motor drive is accomplished. The developed model is presented in a generalized form that is applicable irrespective of the number of pulses per supply half‐cycle. Measured and predicted parameters are shown to be very close and the model is proved to be efficient and accurate. Both continuous and discontinuous modes of operation are covered, and critical operating conditions at which the system moves from one mode to the other are thoroughly investigated. The effects of the armature inductance‐to‐resistance ratio and the chopping frequency on these critical conditions, load and line harmonics, and on the ripple contents of the armature current are also thoroughly investigated. Currently Dr. Bamberger is an assistant professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University. Dr. Bamberger's research program is focused on the design implementation and application of multidimensional multirate filter banks subband image and video compression analysis of nonstationary data and application of digital signal processing techniques in the design of analog and mixed-mode integrated circuits. Dr. Bamberger is the founder and director of the Signal Processing Instructional Facility (SPIF Lab) at Washington State University. The SPIF Lab features interactive multimedia-based tools for teaching concepts related to linear systems theory. Dr. Bamberger is active in developing multimedia-based instructional laboratories for a variety of other topics as well. In addition to his teaching and research programs Dr. Bamberger is an associate editor for theIEEE Transactions on Signal Processingand a member of the editorial board forComputer Applications in Engineering Education. Dr. Bamberger is also advisor to the WSU Student Branch of the IEEE and assistant director of the WSU Cougar Marching Band. Dr. Bamberger is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Eta Kappa Nu Tau Beta Pi and Kappa Kappa Psi.

The Signal Processing Instructional Facility (SPIF Lab) is an experiment in using in interactive multimedia for teaching concepts related to linear systems theory and signal processing. The goals of the SPIF lab are to augment, enhance, and interconnect sophomore, junior, and senior level courses with the common thread of linear systems and transforms by unifying the experimentation medium. In this fashion, physical phenomenon is returned to the forefront of engineering education. The laboratory features powerful Mathematica Notebooks (a form of hypertext) and interactive applications that use dedicated DSP microprocessors.

Power System Stabilizers (PSS) superimposed to the basic control system of an HVDC link supplying a weak AC system, in order to enhance its frequency regulation action, are proposed. To decrease the AC voltage sensitivity at the inverter side, the basic control system of the HVDC link is proposed to operate with the rectifier under Minimum Ignition Angle (MIA) control and the inverter under Constant Current (CC) control. Inputs to the PSS are the frequency and the AC voltage deviations at the inverter side and their constant parameters are calculated using modal control technique. Detailed simulation results for a practical integrated AC/DC system are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed control scheme. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AN AI-BASED DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR NAVAL SHIP DESIGN

He received a master of engineering degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan in 1977. He obtained his Ph.D. in engineering management at the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1991. His current research interests include artificial intelligence project management and concurrent engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Colin O. Benjamin:is an associate professor of engineering management at the University of Missouri-Rolla and has had several years of international teaching industrial and consulting experience. He received a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of the West Indies an MBA from the Cranfield Institute of Technology U.K. and an M.Sc. in engineering production and management from the University of Birmingham U.K. His current research interests include artificial intelligence (AI) multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) facilities planning and computer integrated manufacturing (CIM). He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Naval ship design is a complex, iterative decision-making process that requires not only qualitative reasoning and quantitative computations, but also effective handling of massive amounts of information. The development of a systematic procedure in the form of an interactive Decision Support System (DSS) incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can assist in improving the design process. The DSS reported in this paper integrates conventional naval ship design application software with an expert system. Modeling techniques such as a spreadsheet, a database management system, and graphic display capability are incorporated as well. This DSS facilitates "what-if" analysis of design problems and assessment of the trade-offs between performance and cost. The DSS will aid rapid generation of design alternatives and facilitate their evaluation. A final recommendation is made based on multiattribute decision analysis using the straightforward points allocation method and the analytic hierarchy process. During a typical consultation process, the user is prompted for inputs to the naval ship design process and is provided with a wide range of reports in graphical and numerical form. During a structured system evaluation, the DSS displayed considerable accuracy, flexibility, speed, user-friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. The reliability and validity of the system were also confirmed. These evaluation procedures provide a replicable methodology for verification and validation of this type of AI-based decision support system.

He received the BTech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur India in 1969 the MScE degree from the University of New Brunswick Fredericton Canada in 1971. and the MS and PhD degrees from Syracuse University. Syracuse NY in 1975. From 1975-1976 he was with the TACO Division of the General Instruments Corporation. He was with the Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester NY) from 1976-1985. He was a Research Fellow at the Gordon Mckay Laboratory Harvard University Cambridge MA from 1977 to 1978. He is now a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Syracuse University. His current research interests deal with numerical solutions of operator equations arising in electromagnetics and signal processing with application to system design. He obtained one of the “ best solution” awards in May 1977 at the Rome Air Development Center (RADC) Spectral Estimation Workshop. Dynamic analysis of waveguide structures containing dielectric and metal strips is presented. The analysis utilizes a finite difference frequency domain procedure to reduce the problem to a symmetric matrix eigenvalue problem. Since the matrix is also sparse, the eigenvalue problem can be solved quickly and efficiently using the conjugate gradient method resulting in considerable savings in computer storage and time. Comparison is made with the analytical solution for the loaded dielectric waveguide case. For the microstrip case, we get both waveguide modes and quasi-TEM modes. The quasi-TEM modes in the limit of zero frequency are checked with the static analysis which also uses finite difference. Some of the quasi-TEM modes are spurious. This article describes their origin and discusses how to eliminate them. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the principles.

The estimation of an absolute life expectancy of a structure is a complex process and the results are expected to have relatively large levels of uncertainty. In this study, a comparative analysis is undertaken between two different patrol boats. This is an approach which results in a higher confidence level because certain factors common to both boats can be eliminated by assuming them to be at constant normal levels. The study is limited to the critical forward bottom plating and takes into account the differences in material, plate dimensions, operational profile, structure and loading of the two vessels. Two failure modes, plastic plate deformation and fatigue, are considered, and a novel approach to plate wastage is included. Many factors affect the structural life of a vessel. They include structural type, operational profile, structural details, loads, inspection and maintenance, design methods, safety factors, corrosion, and environmental factors. There are three types of uncertainty associated with these factors; namely, physical randomness, statistical uncertainties, and model uncertainties. The method described is designed to address these uncertainties. The objective of the paper is to present the reliability-based structural life assessment method, and then to use it to evaluate and compare the structural performance of the forward bottom plating of the two patrol boats. The results of the evaluation are presented in the form of graphs and tables in order to facilitate the comparative evaluation. The method is performed within a computer-based format which allows parametric sensitivity analysis of several variables including the size of the plating panel, thickness, operational profile and loading. The sensitivity of the structural life expectancy of the forward bottom plating to variations in these parameters is evaluated.

A methodology for the structural life assessment of a ship's structure is suggested. The methodology is based on probabilistic analysis using reliability concepts and the statistics of extremes. In this approach, the estimation of structural life expectancy is based on selected failure modes. All possible failure modes of the ship must be investigated and the most likely paths to structural failure identified. For the purpose of illustration two failure modes are considered in this study. They are plate plastic deformation and fatigue cracking. Structural life based on these two failure modes is determined for an example vessel. The methodology determines the probability of failure of the ship's structural components according to the identified failure modes as a function of time. The results can be interpreted as the cumulative probability distribution function (CDF) of structural life. Due to the unknown level of statistical correlation between failure modes, limits or bounds on the CDF of the structural life are established. The limits correspond to the extreme cases of fully correlated and independent failure modes. The CDFs of structural life are determined for two inspection strategies; namely, inspection every year and inspection every two years with a warranty inspection at the end of the first year. The meaning of the results for the case investigated in this study is that, for example, given an inspection strategy of two years and a desired life of 15 years, there is a 72% chance that the vessel will not experience enough partial damage‘ in the failure modes identified to constitute reaching the “end of structural life” as defined.

APL and LISP are very similar languages—both manipulate a complex data structure and the functional structure of the languages has been ideally chosen for convenient manipulation of these structures. Proposals have been made to combine them by embedding one within the other. Another approach is generalization of each into a common superior.
