This study focuses on an experimental damage detection and correlation-based localization demonstration using wireless sensors. A simple cantilever beam has been constructed in the laboratory to serve as a test bed for measuring acceleration responses with these devices. Product line engineering has become an important and widely used approach for efficiently developing portfolios of software products. The idea is to develop a set of products as a single, coherent development task from a core asset base, a collection of artifacts specifically designed for use across a portfolio. This approach produces order-of-magnitude economic improvements compared to one-at-a-time software system development. Because the product line approach isn't limited to specific technical properties of the planned software but rather focuses on economic characteristics, high return on investment has become the anthem of the approach's protagonists. Despite this focus on ROl, most of the economic arguments for the product line community are based on singular data points derived from case studies or on reasonableness and simplistic cost curves. A manager must describe the situations in which the model can be applied. Almost all product line adoption scenarios involve fielding a set of existing or planned products as one or more product lines.

The information system outsourcing arena has recently seen the introduction of a new player – the Application Service Provider (ASP). ASPs are third-party companies that rent commonly available packaged software applications and related services. The model offers certain important characteristics that could result in important advantages to users. Some of these include: firms get access to world-class applications offering the same set of features as used by larger rivals, software developers are assured a recurring stream of revenue from their software products and upgrades, users are protected from the tribulations of upgrading and maintaining their software and *** this paper, we examine the emerging ASP model of providing software services to organisations. We then suggest a classification scheme for potential online ASP marketplaces and work on building a testable prototype for these marketplaces. We will use this testbed to study the influence of different attributes of clients and vendors on the services provided on the *** testbed can also help in developing deception-free protocols for the interactions of the marketplace with service providers. In an environment where marketplaces provide trust-mechanisms for service-delivery, it is necessary for the marketplace to ensure that service providers have the appropriate incentives and penalties to truthfully reveal their capabilities.

Object technology is an approach that is increasingly being adopted for the development of quality software and software-intensive systems. Recent experience has demonstrated that it provides a sophisticated environment to support high quality software engineering practice. However, the use of object technology should not be restricted to languages but should encompass analysis, design, V&V and many such aspects belonging to the methodological dimension of the development life-cycle. Furthermore, it should also cover other issues belonging to the technological and contextual aspects.

A comparison of the electrodynamics of metals under the action of large electric currents

A numerical investigation of the behavior of electrically thin exploding foils is presented. This work examines the effect that non-linear material properties have on the electrodynamic behavior of three metallic bridgefoils (Al, Cu, Au) having identical geometries but different material compositions. Previous experimental work and simulations focused on copper bridgefoils electrically excited using the first quarter cycle of a 1200 A, 1.7 Mhz current source. This high power current pulse induced solid to vapor phase transitions over the entire foil surface in exploding foil experiments. Use of a finite element code (FEM) to determine the transient thermal and electrical effects in the pre-melt regime has been previously demonstrated for copper. The FEM code solves two non-linear partial differential equations which account for the thermal conductivity, latent heat of fusion, and specific heat(C\(_{\rm v}\)) of the foil. The focus of this research is to contrast the simulated behavior of three metal foils (Al, Cu, Au) by examining corresponding plots of electrical and thermal signatures as the foils progress temporally to melt. The model predicts that the pattern of pre-melt behavior for all three foils is similar. The time to melt was found to be shortest for gold, followed by copper, and finally, aluminum (\(T_m {\rm Au}< T_m {\rm Cu} < T_m{\rm Al}\)).

Embedded systems are computer-based systems which must respond to external stimuli within time scales determined by the external environment. Such systems are required to achieve ever more demanding behavioural. performance and safety requirements. Embedded systems are found in applications such as primary flight control, gas-turbine engine control and railway traffic management Often complex embedded systems are distributed, typically to achieve demanding performance or dependability requirements, and must operate within hard real-time constraints. Considerable effort is required to select optimal design solutions and ensure adherence to specified requirements. In embedded systems safety, reliability and response-times are considered as strict constraints on the system design. Achievement of these constraints requires meticulous analysis, typically through the use of specialist modelling and simulation techniques. Integration of knowledge and understanding obtained from disparate detailed models remains a considerable challenge. Ideally, a system which has both continuous dynamics and event-driven parts. would be modelled in one environment, using the most appropriate techniques for each part, and allowing the analysis of the whole system to be carried out simultaneously. The paper presents an integrated approach in order to translate automatically the information manipulated during the different phases of the design: specification. analysis, design and implementation.

Developing a prototype concurrent design tool for composite topside structures

He completed his bachelor of science degree in aeropace and ocean engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985 and his master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in 1990. Mr. Dirlik recently completed a master of science program in applied physics at The Johns Hopins University and currently works in the Radar Cross Section and Target Physics Branch of the Signatures Directorate at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Corderoke Division. He has worked on Navy low observable programs since 1990. Stephen Hambric:is a research associate at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B. S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his D. Sc. in mechnical engineering from the George Washington University. He has worked on several computer aided multidiscikplinary design and optimization projects over the years including an automated propeller design system and a structural acoustic optimization capability. Dr. Shpour Azarm:is currently working as an associate professor with the Design and Manufacturing Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of maryland at College Park. Dr Azarm's expertise is in the areas of optimization-based designed and concurrent design and optimization of multidisciplinary systems. He was a consultant at Black & Decker Corporation (summer 1996) and worked as a Navy senior summer faculty fellow (summer 1995) and a NASA summer faculty fellow (summer 1994). He was a visiting scientist at NASA Langley Research Center for Multidisciplinary Analysis and Applied Structural Optimzatiom at the University of Siegen in Germany (spring 1992) and the Design Institute of the Technical University of Denmark (summer 1990). A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.

His research interests are in the physical and chemical processes that control contaminant fate in aqueous systems both in the natural environment and in engineered processes of treatment and remediation. Recent work has included both laboratory and computer modeling studies related to contaminant fate and transport in subsurface environments. Ball holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering and science from Stanford University and a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia. He is a registered pro-fessional engineer in the state of Virginia. Guoshou Xia is a Ph.D. candidate at Johns Hopkins University He was previously a lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at Southeast University in China. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Hefei University and his M.S. degree in environmental engineering from East China University of Chemical Technology. His current research interests are in the area ofsubsurface contaminant transport with emphasis on better understanding the nature of organic contaminant interactions with subsurface solids. Donald P. Durfee received his M.S. degree in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1993 and is currently a Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins. He is studying contaminant fate and transport in the subsurface and is also interested in site characterization and remediation issues. Ryan D. Wilson is a research associate and Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Waterloo Waterloo Ontario. His research interests include field and modeling studies of semipassive remediation technologies and the behavior of gaseous tracers. The evaluation of contaminant concentrations in ground water and soil is an essential aspect of most hazardous waste remedial investigations. This paper describes methods applied toward obtaining, preserving, and analyzing subsurface samples for the determination of VOC concentrations in the saturated region of an unconfined coastal plain aquifer at Dover Air Force Base (DAFB), Delaware. The described protocol involved headspace-free subsampling of cores, field preservation of subsamples in methanol, and overnight extraction of the VOCs at elevated temperature (70 degrees C). Methanol-extracted compounds were subsequently transferred to hexane and analyzed by gas chromatography. The method was found to achieve quantitative extraction from the aquifer sands in a single step, although extraction from fine-grained and more strongly sorbing aquitard samples required multiple methanol extractions to achieve comparable recovery. An extensive set of DAFB results is presented as an indication of how these methods can be applied toward characterizing field-scale contamination with a high degree of resolution and accuracy. These data have enabled a quantitative estimate of the contaminant distribution at this site and offer valuable insight into processes of contaminant migration into the underlying aquitard. In these regards, the methods used are believed to have provided much more accurate results than could have been obtained using more commonly applied techniques.

Ionic current model of the retinal photoreceptor and simulation analysis of the photoresponses

The fact that the reception of optical information by the retinal photoreceptor and the process of its transformation to the membrane voltage response are due to an interaction between the photocurrent from the outer segment and each ionic current in the inner segment has been confirmed by many physiological experiments. However, the properties of each ionic current in the photoreceptor have not been clear since no physiologically reliable model of the retinal photoreceptor has been constructed. This paper proposes a model of a retinal photoreceptor, which is a combination of the outer segment model (devised by Torre et al.) and the inner segment model (devised by the present authors). It has been confirmed that this model can accurately represent the electron physiological properties of a retinal photoreceptor. Using this model simulation, the relationship between the photocurrent and the photoresponse dynamics, and an oscillatory phenomena caused by a strong light flash have been analyzed. The results show that the dynamic and nonlinear response characteristics of a retinal photoreceptor are due to the interactions between the nonlinear ionic current in the inner segment and the mechanism of the intracellular calcium.
