Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

Object technology is an approach that is increasingly being adopted for the development of quality software and software-intensive systems. The fact that the reception of optical information by the retinal photoreceptor and the process of its transformation to the membrane voltage response are due to an interaction between the photocurrent from the outer segment and each ionic current in the inner segment has been confirmed by many physiological experiments. However, the properties of each ionic current in the photoreceptor have not been clear since no physiologically reliable model of the retinal photoreceptor has been constructed. This paper proposes a model of a retinal photoreceptor, which is a combination of the outer segment model (devised by Torre et al.) and the inner segment model (devised by the present authors). It has been confirmed that this model can accurately represent the electron physiological properties of a retinal photoreceptor. Using this model simulation, the relationship between the photocurrent and the photoresponse dynamics, and an oscillatory phenomena caused by a strong light flash have been analyzed. The results show that the dynamic and nonlinear response characteristics of a retinal photoreceptor are due to the interactions between the nonlinear ionic current in the inner segment and the mechanism of the intracellular calcium.

On-line identification of continuous time-delay systems using the genetic algorithm

This paper proposes a new kind of on-line identification method of continuous time-delay systems from sampled input-output data. In order to track the time-varying system parameters as well as time-delay, the recursive linear least squares (RLS) method is combined in a bootstrap manner with the genetic algorithm (GA) which has a high potential for global optimization. The time-delay is coded into binary bit strings and searched by the GA, while the system parameters are updated by the RLS method. Furthermore, this method (GALS method) is hybridized with the sequential nonlinear least squares method to improve the speed of convergence. Simulation results show that both the GALS and hybrid methods are efficient in the case that the system changes abruptly, and among them the hybrid method has superior convergence property to the GALs method and yields excellent estimation results in the case that the system changes with time continuously.

His current research interests include coding theory for computers fault-tolerant memories VLSI defect-toleranceand WSI systems. He is a co-author ofError Control Coding for Computer Systems(Prentice-Hall1989) EssentiaLF of Error-Correcting Coding Techniques (Academic Press 1990) and other books. Because of its capability of high-speed search, the associative memory (CAM) is expected to be used in a variety of information processing systems. In this paper, novel fault-tolerant techniques which are effective for on-line use are proposed for TLB which is an example of the application of CAM. First, fault and error models of the TLB consisting of the CAM part and the SRAM part are clarified. Then, the fault-tolerant techniques for these faults and errors, such as distance separable technique, cod-ing technique, simplified 1-out-of-n check and graceful degradation, are proposed. The distance separable technique which encodes the data stored in the CAM part is the one which masks the faulty CAM part and prevents errors from propagating to the subsequent circuits. The coding technique checks the one-to-one correspondence between the data in the CAM and those in SRAM by using the SEC-DED code with byte error detection capability, i.e., SEC-DED-SbED code, and at the same time it detects and corrects errors in the data stored in SRAM. The simplified 1-out-of-n check processes association errors. The graceful degradation gives a flag in the faulty memory section and prevents it from being used. The methods proposed in this paper are evaluated from area augmentation and error detection capability perspectives. The results show that the fault-tolerant TLB with 32 virtual address bits, 32 physical address bits and 128 entries gives single fault detection probability of nearly 99 percent with 28 percent area increase.

The trend in magnetic record development is toward ever higher areal storage density. Methods for accurate measurement of the magnetic field distribution iri the very small region surrounding the gap of the recording head have been the focus of several recent studies. Using transmission electron beam tomography, a new reconstruction technique is proposed and applied to measure three-dimensional magnetic stray field extending beyond a commercial magnetic head by a developed measurement system. Results have demonstrated the applicability of this technique for measuring a magnetic stray field of several kGauss with an error of less than 10 percent. With transmission electron beam tomography, however, it is difficult to measure directly the magnetic field just beyond the gap of a magnetic head. This is because the stronger Lorentz force of the magnetic field on the electron beam causes the election beam to collide with the head surface. A new method, called reflection electron beam tomography, is presented herein to overcome the forementioned limitation in which the electron beams are injected perpendicularly to the surface of a magnetic head and their deflection vectors are measured at the deflection plane set above the head. Our method is tested with a known magnetic field model of a one-turn coil by computer simulation. Results have shown that the magnetic field just beyond the gap of the magnetic head can be estimated with an error of approximately 20 percent.

An implementation method is proposed for parallel production systems on multicomputers, or message-passing computers, to speed up execution time. There have been proposed parallel production systems using hash mechanism, but they cause a skewed load distribution problem. To obtain more efficient balance of load, the method addressed here and named clustered parallel production systems (CPPS) adopts two load balancing strategies: hash and demand-driven. Taking account of the cost of termination detection, the execution time of the CPPS and simple hash method are estimated, and implement on an nCube2. The estimation meets the execution results. The CPPS provides much better load balance to improve scalability.

In this article a multimedia computer-assisted learning (MCAL) system is presented. The major objective of this work was to investigate the potential of using such systems as tools for transferring instructional course information through various types of computer media as opposed to the classic CAL systems. The philosophy and techniques employed to design the system are investigated. Usage of the implemented system and its merits have been illustrated through its application to teach engineering students and technicians the theory and concepts of marine radar. System design, implementation, test, and revision phases are presented and discussed.

Undersea technologies in the former Soviet Union

He has directed more than a dozen studies of technologies in foreign countries under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation ARPA Departments of Energy and Commerce and other agencies. He has a continuing interest in assessing foreign technologies in comparison to the United States.—-On the faculty of the Sellinger School of Business at Loyola College Dr. DeHaemer is a former department chairman and an associate professor of information systems and decision sciences. He teaches the strategic use of information technology and human-computer interface design. His research includes user performance with automated speech recognition systems for computers and business applications of artificial intelligence. Dr. DeHaemer completed an earlier career as a submarine officer including command of a ballistic missile submarine. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Master's degree in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School. He has an M.B.A. an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A team of experts, assembled by the World technology Evaluation Center, visited twenty-five locations in Russia and Ukraine to observe the state of undersea technologies. Academic sites, basic research institutes, industrial development laboratories, and oceanographic operating bases were visited. The report highlights specific technologies that support research submersibles;and critiques the strengths and weaknesses of the ocean technologies establishment. Russia and Ukraine were found to have a number of strengths, especially in test facilities, a large fleet of surface and submersible research vessels, and highly educated and qualified engineers and scientists. Although political and economic conditions need to be over-come, there is motivation for many cooperative commercial or research ventures with both government institutes and new private companies in Russia and Ukraine.
