Optofluidic transport and assembly of nanoparticles using an all-dielectric quasi-BIC metasurface

Manipulating fluids by light at the micro/nanoscale has been a long-sought-after goal for lab-on-a-chip *** heating has been demonstrated to control microfluidic dynamics due to the enhanced and confined light absorption from the intrinsic losses of ***,the counterpart of metals,has been used to avoid undesired thermal effects due to its negligible light ***,we report an innovative optofluidic system that leverages a quasi-BIC-driven all-dielectric metasurface to achieve subwavelength scale control of temperature and fluid *** experiments show that suspended particles down to 200 nanometers can be rapidly aggregated to the center of the illuminated metasurface with a velocity of tens of micrometers per second,and up to millimeter-scale particle transport is *** strong electromagnetic field enhancement of the quasi-BIC resonance increases the flow velocity up to three times compared with the off-resonant situation by tuning the wavelength within several nanometers *** also experimentally investigate the dynamics of particle aggregation with respect to laser wavelength and power.A physical model is presented and simulated to elucidate the phenomena and surfactants are added to the nanoparticle colloid to validate the *** study demonstrates the application of the recently emerged all-dielectric thermonanophotonics in dealing with functional liquids and opens new frontiers in harnessing non-plasmonic nanophotonics to manipulate microfluidic ***,the synergistic effects of optofluidics and high-Q all-dielectric nanostructures hold enormous potential in high-sensitivity biosensing applications.

Vision-driven NMPC for Autonomous Aerial Navigation in Subterranean Environments ⁎

This work establishes a novel robocentric Non-linear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) framework for fast fully autonomous navigation of quadrotors in featureless dark tunnel environments. Additionally, this work leverages the processing of a single camera to generate direction commands along the tunnel axis, while regulating the platform’s altitude. The extracted visual dynamics are coupled in the sequel with the NMPC problem, structured around the Proximal Averaged Newton-type method for Optimal Control (PANOC), which is a fast numerical optimization method that is not sensitive to ill conditioning and is suitable for embedded NMPC implementations. Multiple fully realistic simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in challenging environments.

Nanowires have potential applications in future generations of nanoscale electronics. Our motivation of studying Bi nanowires is based on the unique properties of bulk Bi. These include very small effective masses, a long mean-free path and the low melting point (271°C). Calculations of the transport properties predict that the Bi nanowires have a very high thermoelectric efficiency. The effects of quantum confinement are pronounced in Bi because of its small effective masses. The resulting change in the band structure of bulk Bi is shown in Fig. 1. The broken curves depict the band structure in which the T-point valence band overlaps with the L-point conduction band by 38mev making bulk Bi a semimetal. Due to quantum effects, the band edges split into subbands shown by solid curves. As the wire diameter decreases, eventually the lowest conduction subband and the highest valence subband no longer overlap and the material becomes an indirect-gap semiconductor (at ∼50nm diameter).

The speech recognition has caught the attention of more and more researchers as the important branch of artificial intelligence. However, speech recognition just can recognize the neutral meaning and ignore the important emotion information. So,this paper proposes an emotion fingerprint extraction algorithm. The speech signal is decomposed by lifting wavelet packets. And combining singular value entropy and sample entropy as the feature vector to characterize the speech time-frequency matrix coefficient. Then adopting the statistical values to extract emotion fingerprints. The experiments show that this algorithm can reflect the emotion information of the speech fully and distinguish several major emotions well.

Bats are unique in that they can achieve unrivaled agile maneuvers due to their functionally versatile wing conformations. Among these maneuvers, roosting (landing) has captured attentions because bats perform this acrobatic maneuver with a great composure. This work attempts to reconstruct bat landing maneuvers with a Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) called Allice. Allice is capable of adjusting the position of its Center of Gravity (CG) with respect to the Center of Pressure (CP) using a nonlinear closed-loop feedback. This nonlinear control law, which is based on the method of input-output feedback linearization, enables attitude regulations through variations in CG-CP distance. To design the model-based nonlinear controller, the Newton-Euler dynamic model of the robot is considered, in which the aerodynamic coefficients of lift and drag are obtained experimentally. The performance of the proposed control architecture is validated by conducting several experiments.

He has visited France Netherlands and Germany under Indo-Europe Clean Coal Development Program. He has guided 42 UG PG and PhD project works. Kaliappan completed his bachelors in electrical and electronics engineering and Masters in Computer Science. Fault detection is important for effective and safe process operation. Partial least squares (PLS) has been used successfully in fault detection for multivariate processes with highly correlated variables. However, the conventional PLS-based detection metrics, such as the Hotelling's T 2 and the Q statistics are not well suited to detect small faults because they only use information about the process in the most recent observation. Exponentially weighed moving average (EWMA), however, has been shown to be more sensitive to small shifts in the mean of process variables. In this paper, a PLS-based EWMA fault detection method is proposed for monitoring processes represented by PLS models. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the traditional PLS-based fault detection method through a simulated example involving various fault scenarios that could be encountered in real processes. The simulation results clearly show the effectiveness of the proposed method over the conventional PLS method.
