This paper presents a development of quadriceps muscle models using ANFIS and Fuzzy Logic based on Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). The models inputs parameter consists of stimulation frequency, pulse width, and sampling time are used to predict quadriceps output torque. The muscle models developed are then validate with the clinical data to evaluate the accuracy of the torque output predicted with the identified parameters. In this study, Fuzzy Logic muscle model gives better performance representing quadriceps muscle model. © 2013 IEEE.

Effects of adaptive dynamical linking in networked games

The role of dynamical topologies in the evolution of cooperation has received considerable attention, as some studies have demonstrated that dynamical networks are much better than static networks in terms of boosting cooperation. Here we study a dynamical model of evolution of cooperation on stochastic dynamical networks in which there are no permanent partners to each agent. Whenever a new link is created, its duration is randomly assigned without any bias or preference. We allow the agent to adaptively adjust the duration of each link during the evolution in accordance with the feedback from game interactions. By Monte Carlo simulations, we find that cooperation can be remarkably promoted by this adaptive dynamical linking mechanism both for the game of pairwise interactions, such as the Prisoner's Dilemma game (PDG), and for the game of group interactions, illustrated by the public goods game (PGG). And the faster the adjusting rate, the more successful the evolution of cooperation. We also show that in this context weak selection favors cooperation much more than strong selection does. What is particularly meaningful is that the prosperity of cooperation in this study indicates that the rationality and selfishness of a single agent in adjusting social ties can lead to the progress of altruism of the whole population.

Solar power plants collect available thermal energy in a usable form at the desired temperature range. Efficient operation requires a fast start-up and reliable operation in varying cloudy conditions without unnecessary shutdowns and start-ups. Fast and well damped linguistic equation (LE) controllers have been tested in Spain at a collector field, which uses parabolic-trough collectors to supply thermal energy in form of hot oil to an electricity generation system or a multi-effect desalination plant. control is achieved by means of varying the flow pumped through the pipes in the field during the operation. Solar energy can be collected only when the irradiation is high enough. The nights and the heavy cloud periods need to come up with the storage. The LE controllers extend the operation to varying cloudy conditions in a smart way. Varying energy demand during the daytime can be smoothly handled in the LE control system with predefined model-based adaptation techniques. The system activates special features when needed. The intelligent state indicators react well to the changing operating conditions and can be used in smart working point control to further improve the operation in connection with the other energy sources in SmartGrids. The working point can be chosen in a way which improves the efficiency of the energy collection. A trade-off of the temperature and the flow is needed to achieve a good level for the collected power.

Although there exists a number of optimization frameworks only commercial and closed source software address, to an extent, real-world optimization problems and arguably these software packages are not very easy to use. In this work we introduce an open source integrated optimization environ- ment which is designed to be extensible and have a smooth learning curve so that it can be used by the non-expert in industry. We call this environment, Liger. Liger is an appli- cation that is built about a visual programming language, by which optimization work-flows can be created. Addi- tionally, Liger provides a communication layer with exter- nal tools, whose functionality can be directly integrated and used with native components. This fosters code reuse and further reduces the required effort on behalf of the prac- titioner in order to obtain a solution to the optimization problem. Furthermore, there exists a number of available algorithms which are fully configurable, however should the need arise new algorithms can also be created just as eas- ily by reusing what we call operator nodes. Operator nodes perform specific tasks on a set, or a single solution. Lastly as visual exploration of the obtained solutions is essential for decision makers, we also provide state-of-the art visual- ization capabilities.

The latest test campaign focused on achieving a smooth operation in changing operating conditions. Fast start-up, smooth operation and efficient energy collection is achieved even in challenging situations: cloudy conditions and load disturbances are handled efficiently. A trade-off of the temperature and the flow is based on model-based optimisation to achieve a good level for the collected power. The working point is chosen in a way which improves the efficiency of the energy collection and problematic operating conditions are removed by limiting the acceptable range of the working point.

The aim of this paper is to develop a new datadriven approach for learning the ℌ ∞ -norm of multivariable systems that can be used for model-error-modeling in robust feedback control. The proposed algorithm only requires iterative experiments on the system. Especially for the multivariable situation that is considered in this paper, these experiments have to be judiciously chosen. The proposed algorithm delivers an estimate of the ℌ ∞ -norm of an unknown multivariable system, without the need or explicit construction of a (parametric or non-parametric) model. The results are experimentally demonstrated on model-error-modeling of a multivariable industrial active vibration isolation system. Finally, connections to learning control algorithms are established.

Using Laplace transforms we extend the economic production quantity (EPQ) model by analysing cash flows from a net present value (NPV) viewpoint. We obtain an exact expression for the present value of the cash flows in the EPQ problem. From this, we are able to derive the optimal batch size. We obtain insights into the monotonicity and convexity of the present value of each of the cash flows, and show that there is a unique minimum in the present value of the sum of the cash flows in the extended EPQ model. We also obtain exact point solutions at several values in the parameter space. We compare the exact solution to a Maclaurin series expansion and show that serious errors exist with the first-order approximation when the production rate is close to the demand rate. Finally, we consider an alternative formulation of the EPQ model when the opportunity cost of the inventory investment is made explicit. © The authors 2012. Three approaches for higher-order sliding-mode based unmatched uncertainty compensation are summarized. Firstly, an algorithm is proposed based on the block control and quasi-continuous higher order sliding modes techniques. This method provides for the finite-time exact tracking of a smooth desired signal in spite of unmatched perturbations and allows the reduction of the controller gains in the case of partial knowledge of the system model. Thereafter, the combination of integral high-order sliding modes with the hierarchical quasi-continuous controller is proposed allowing finite-time convergence theoretically. Finally, high-order sliding mode observers are employed for exact state and uncertainties/perturbations reconstruction. A sliding mode control design is proposed which ensures theoretically exact compensation of the uncertainties/perturbations for the corresponding unmatched states based on the identified perturbation values. An inverted pendulum simulation example is considered for illustrating the feasibility of the proposed approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology. ©2013 IEEE.
