There is a worldwide interest in the use of renewable resources for the generation of electrical power. Between all renewable energy sources, ocean energy is the one that still has the furthest to go to achieve commercial maturity. As the most promising ocean energy that can be harnessed in the Basque Country is wave energy, the NEREIDA MOWC project, promoted and led by Basque Energy Board, aims to prove the viability of this technology for future commercial plants. In this paper, an Oscillating Water Column-based wave power generation plant is modeled and controlled by means of a new control scheme that takes into account the influence of turbine damping and the main requirements imposed by new Grid Codes when a grid fault occurs on the transmission system.

Wound care skills are essential for patients in stable condition after surgery. A nurse must teach wound care skills and explain infection symptoms and signs to patients or their families before discharge to help wound healing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of group teaching with multimedia materials on wound care skills of surgical patients. This study is based on Solomon four-group design to study four surgical wards in a medical teaching hospital. There were 121 surgical patients selected according to purposive sampling, and divided into two experimental groups and two control groups. Test groups received multimedia teaching compiled by the researcher, and control groups received traditional nursing instruction. Performance of one test group and one control group were measured with a structured questionnaire before teaching, and all patients were measured after teaching. Data were collected and analyzed by SPSS/PC software package. Performance of test group and the control group before and after nursing instruction showed statistically significant difference (p=0.00). Wound care skills progress among all the four groups are significantly different (p= 0.002). It is an important task of nursing staff to provide disease-related knowledge and guidance of patient care to reduce complications. This study finds that wound care nursing guidelines with multimedia materials really enhance the wound care skills of patients and family members. It is hoped that this study will be a reference for other health education programs. © 2012 IEEE.

When a mixture of particles with different attributes undergoes vibration, a segregation pattern is often observed. For example, in muesli cereal packs, the largest particles-the Brazil nutstend to end up at the top. For this reason, the phenomenon is known as the Brazil nut effect. In previous research, an algorithm inspired by this effect was designed to produce segregation patterns in swarms of simulated agents that move on a horizontal plane. In this paper, we adapt this algorithm for implementation on robots with directional vision. We use the e-puck robot as a platform to test our implementation. In a swarm of epucks, different robots mimic disks of different sizes (larger than their physical dimensions). The motion of every robot is governed by a combination of three components: (i) attraction towards a point, which emulates the effect of a gravitational pull, (ii) random motion, which emulates the effect of vibration, and (iii) repulsion from nearby robots, which emulates the effect of collisions between disks. The algorithm does not require robots to discriminate between other robots; yet, it is capable of forming annular structures where the robots in each annulus represent disks of identical size. We report on a set of experiments performed with a group of 20 physical e-pucks. The results obtained in 100 trials of 20 minutes each show that the percentage of incorrectly-ordered pairs of disks from different groups decreases as the size ratio of disks in different groups is increased. In our experiments, this percentage was, on average, below 0.5% for size ratios from 3.0 to 5.0. Moreover, for these size ratios, all segregation errors observed were due to mechanical failures that caused robots to stop moving.

The continuous and discrete state estimation problem in linear switched systems with unknown inputs and unstable internal dynamics is addressed. A robust observer based on High-Order Sliding-Mode is proposed to solve the problem under mild structural conditions. Simulation results support the proposed estimation approach. © 2012 IFAC.

The information of at least three nodes can be used for node or target localization within wireless sensor network (WSN) with received signal strength indicator (RSSI) method. This mechanism of group decision making was integrated with swarm robotic search for time saving, for the communication system of swarm robots essentially formed a WSN. Following the extented particle swarm optimization (EPSO)-based model, each robot was guided by its own cognition and social experience about target position in the environment at each time step. Both of them were individual experience of certain robot. We modified this model by replacing the social term with the estimation value of target position. Result from simulations show that the proposed GDMEPSO model dominates over EPSO when swarm size was big enough. © 2012 IEEE.

The problem of simultaneous estimation of the continuous and discrete state with additive faults in linear switched systems is addressed. Under mild structural conditions a robust estimator is designed to solve the problem. The proposed strategy includes a technique for fault detection. The fault detection and isolation problem is studied for a class of nonlinear systems. Under structural conditions, a bank of High-Order Sliding-Mode observers is proposed. The value of the equivalent output injection is used for detecting and isolating particular faults in the system. The proposed method provides finite-time isolation of actuator and plant faults. Simulation results support the proposed approach. © 2012 IFAC.
