This paper presents an Adaptive Predictive control strategy based on Neural Networks for nonlinear systems. In order to train the Neural Network controller, an identification of the system is carried out by the Neural Network Identifier. This second Neural Network provides the training terms related to the nonlinear system dynamics. In this way it is possible to train the Neural Network controller online. The simulation results show a correct online adaptation of the NN controller and the validity of the proposed control strategy.

This paper presents a new approach to multi-agent coverage path planning problem. This algorithm enables multiple robots with limited sensor capabilities to perform coverage efficiently over a shared territory. Each robot is assigned with an exclusive route, which enables it to carry out its cleaning process simultaneously with minimal path overlapping. The objectives of this work are (i) Identify a path for each robot such that each robot is responsible for covering a different region. In this way, there will be minimal overlap between coverage of the robots, (ii) the methods and procedures must be applicable to a group of simple mobile robots with very few sensors to guarantee their industrial interest.

This paper explores the use of a discretization procedure based on multi-rate sampling called Generalized Sample-data Hold Function (GSHF) for modeling and control purposes. Within this framework, the designer is allowed to use the degrees of freedom, provided by the GSHF to deliberately cause stable pole-zero cancellations and, thus, obtaining reduced-order discrete-time systems from linear continuous-time ones. This methodology is used for controller design purposes, concretely, Proportional-Integral-Derwatwe (PID) control. In this way, a continuous-time process that is not suitable for PID control is discretized by means of a GSHF allowing a double benefit: complex dynamics of the continuous-time plant are removed in order to make PID control adequate and, for the reason that the order of the model is reduced, more simple tuning procedures can be. used. Simulation examples have shown the applicability of the proposed, approach and, its usefulness providing good asymptotic tracking and smooth inter-sample behavior both in the perfectly known system and under parametric uncertainty. The increased complexity of plants and the development of sophisticated control systems have encouraged the parallel development of efficient rapid fault detection and isolation (FDI) systems. FDI in industrial system has lately become of great significance. This paper proposes a new technique for short time fault detection and diagnosis in nonlinear dynamic systems with multi inputs and multi outputs. The main contribution of this paper is to develop a FDI schema according to reference models of fault-free and faulty behaviors designed with neural networks. Fault detection is obtained according to residuals that result from the comparison of measured signals with the outputs of the fault free reference model. Then, Euclidean distance from the outputs of models of faults to the measurements leads to fault isolation. The advantage of this method is to provide not only early detection but also early diagnosis thanks to the parallel computation of the models of faults and to the proposed decision algorithm. The effectiveness of this approach is illustrated with simulations on DAMADICS benchmark.

The suitability of distributed power generation systems working at medium and high capacity as it is the case of wave power generation plants, requires a reliable Fault-Ride-Through capability. When a grid fault occurs on the transmission system, the speed of the turbo-generator group increases uncontrolled, the induction generator injects large peak currents that can potentially damage the rotor converters and the plant tends to increase the reactive power consumption, so that it might intensify the voltage dip and contribute to the collapse of the power network. A simple solution would be the automatic disconnection of the plant from the grid in response to the power fault, but this policy could lead to a series of chain disconnections that would produce a massive power network failure. This is why new Grid Codes oblige the distributed power generation systems to remain connected to the power network, even in case of balanced voltage dips. In this paper, an Oscillating Water Column (OWC)-based wave power generation plant equipped with a Doubly Fed Induction Generator is modeled and controlled to overcome these balanced grid faults. The improvement relays on the implementation of a control scheme that suitably coordinates the air flow control, the crowbar, the rotor and the grid side converters to allow the plant to remain in service during the grid fault, and to contribute to its attenuation by supplying reactive power to the network. The simulated results show how it is obtained a great reduction in the rotor currents, improving the transient power stability and avoiding the rotor acceleration, complying with new Grid Codes requirements.

The traditional verification and validation (V&V) process can produce sufficiently safe and reliable systems in the demanding aerospace field. But this comes at great cost and effort, with the necessary simulation of all possible operational conditions for increasingly complex control systems involving substantial autonomy. It is of interest to go beyond the statistical confidence of traditional Monte Carlo methods. New V&V methods need to cope with a large number of mission parameters and mode transitions. They must identify the worst combinations of perturbations, uncertainties and failures. Two classes of frameworks are investigated in the VVAF project: integrated V&V frameworks (IVVF) supported by simulation based analysis techniques, either integrated or with local analysis techniques to establish the global system properties;and enhanced V&V frameworks (EVVF), based on mathematical proof. Two EVVF techniques are explored: Barrier-construction and Reachability-set analysis. These guarantee fulfillment of globally exact safe operation, by the construction of barrier certificates considering nonlinearities, uncertainties and constraints. In addition, two IVVF techniques are developed: Analytical-based (AIVV) and Optimization-based (OIVV). AIVV consists of integrating and embedding frequency domain LFT-based mu-analysis techniques to exclude regions with guaranteed performance and/or identify the most critical areas, within a Monte Carlo simulation based V&V. With as few runs as possible of the non linear time simulator, local analyses can steer the global search towards the worst case. OIVV uses optimization techniques, also linked to the simulator, to identify and characterize the system worst case. Several heuristic techniques are evaluated for global parameters search, which is then refined using local optimization techniques to locate and characterize the worst case. The mechanical ventilator settings in patients with respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during episodes of acute respiratory failure (ARF) is not a simple task that in most cases is successful based on the experience of physicians. This paper describes an interactive tool based in mathematical models, developed to make easier the study of the interaction between a mechanical ventilator and a patient. It describes all stages of system development, including simulated ventilatory modes, the pathologies of interest and interaction between the user and the system through a graphical interface developed in Matlab and Simulink. The developed computational tool allows the study of most widely used ventilatory modes and its advantages in the treatment of different kind of patients. The graphical interface displays all variables and parameters in the common way of last generation mechanical ventilators do and it is totally interactive, making possible its use by clinical personal, hiding the complexity of implemented mathematical models to the user. The evaluation in different clinical simulated scenes adjusts properly with recent findings in mechanical ventilation scientific literature.

One of the most critical challenges facing society today is climate change and thus the need to realize massive energy savings. Since buildings account for about 40percent of global final energy use, energy efficient building climate control can have an important contribution. In this paper we develop and analyze a Stochastic Model Predictive control (SMPC) strategy for building climate control that takes into account weather predictions to increase energy efficiency while respecting constraints resulting from desired occupant comfort. We investigate a bilinear model under stochastic uncertainty with probabilistic, time varying constraints. We report on the assessment of this control strategy in a large-scale simulation study where the control performance with different building variants and under different weather conditions is studied. For selected cases the SMPC approach is analyzed in detail and shown to significantly outperform current control practice.

We investigate the evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma and the Snowdrift Game on small-world networks in a realistic social context where individuals consider their local contributions to their group and update their strategies by self-questioning. An individual with introspection can determine whether its current strategy is superior by playing a virtual round of the game and its local contribution is defined as the sum of all the payoffs its neighbors collect against it. In our model, the performance of an individual is determined by both its payoff and local contribution through a linear combination. We demonstrate that the present mechanism can produce very robust cooperative behavior in both games. Furthermore, we provide theoretical analysis based on mean-field approximation, and find that the analytical predictions are qualitatively consistent with the simulation results.

This paper presents a new approximation for modelling the time dependent Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) for parallel redundant safety systems, focussed on the analysis of the impact that different test strategies have on the system dependability. The model permits to evaluate explicitly the effects of simultaneous, sequential and staggered test strategies, diverse common cause failure rates and diagnostic coverage. It has been developed based on the different evaluation intervals that a module goes periodically through its time in service: test, repair and time between tests. It includes quantification of both detected and undetected failures, and puts special emphasis on the quantification of the contribution of the common cause failure to the system PFD as an additional component. The effectiveness of the model is demonstrated with a practical application case. Additionally, the impact of different common cause failure rates in the system and different diagnostic coverage in the components is analyzed through a sensitivity analysis. © 2009 Taylor & Francis group.
