This paper presents experimental results and a modelling study of a prototype mechanical device that represents a novel steering compensator for high-performance motorcycles. The mechanical device is different from conventional damper devices since it has been designed to represent a series combination of a damper and an inerter. The ideal inerter is a one-port mechanical element which is the exact analogue of the capacitor under the force-current analogy between mechanical and electrical networks, so that the force (torque) through the device is proportional to the relative acceleration (angular acceleration) across its terminals. The steering compensator is tested on a hydraulic test rig and the experimental admittance of the device is calculated over a specified frequency range. A model of the device is developed, including parasitic effects and nonlinearities, which achieves a good fit between model and experimental data.

In this paper, the control strategy for an overall microgrid is presented. The control has two main levels: (i) the droop control of the inverters, and (ii) the control of the static bypass switch, and the droop settings for the management of the power flow. Thus, a flexible microgrid is obtained to operate in either grid-connected or islanded mode. Results from line- interactive UPS inverters connected in parallel forming a microgrid are presented, showing the feasibility of the presented solution.

The well-known conventional Kalman filter gives the optimal solution but requires an accurate system model and exact stochastic information. Thus, the Kalman filter with incomplete information may be degraded or even diverged. In a number of practical situations, the system model and the stochastic information are incomplete. To solve this problem, a new adaptive fading Kalman filter (AFKF) using the forgetting factor has recently been proposed. This paper extends the AFKF to nonlinear system models to obtain an adaptive fading extended Kalman filter (AFEKF). The forgetting factor is generated from the ratio between the calculated innovation covariance and the estimated innovation covariance. Based on the analysis result of Reif for the EKF, the stability of the AFEKF is also analyzed.

In this paper, a novel droop control scheme applied to distributed UPSs forming a microgrid is proposed. The control architecture consists of two levels of hierarchy: 1) the P/Q droop control method of every UPS unit and 2) the management of the microgrid through the control of the setpoints of the units and the intelligent switch connected to the strong grid. This second level of control let us to connect or disconnect the microgrid to the utility mains, resulting in two scenarios: grid-connected and islanding operation mode. Also, it is taken into account the seamlessly transition between both operation modes, the possibility to share power with the utility grid, and the energy management of the overall system.

This paper introduces a new enumeration technique for (multi)parametric linear programs (pLPs) based on the reverse-search paradigm. We prove that the proposed algorithm has a computational complexity that is linear in the size of the output (number of so-called critical regions) and a constant space complexity. This is an improvement over the quadratic and linear computational and space complexities of current approaches. Current implementations of the proposed approach become faster than existing methods for large problems. Extensions of this method are proposed that make the computational requirements lower than those of existing approaches in all cases, while allowing for efficient parallelisation and bounded memory usage

The data set of batch biological and biotechnological processes can be organized in a three-way data matrix. In this paper the usefulness of different PCA approaches for monitoring is analyzed. Different ways of unfolding and scaling of data have been applied to a pilot-scale SBR data. PCA is used to reduce the dimensionality and to remove the non-linearity dynamic of the data. Moreover, a new method to select the number of principal components is proposed. Loadings graphics are used to determinate the predominant variables for each one. The results show that whatever model can be applied depending on the goal of the monitoring, however the models implicate possible false alarms or faults omission.
