Background: systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Results: This glossary aims at being a first aid kit for the systems Medicine researcher facing an unfamiliar term, where he/she can get a first understanding of them, and, more importantly, examples and references for digging into the topic. © Massimiliano Zanin et al., 2021;Published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2021.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are widespread in wastewater systems and more toxic than microplastics (MPs), necessitating effective removal techniques. Although membranes can effectively remove MPs, their efficiency and mechanisms for NPs removal require further study. A novel hydroxyapatite functionalized PVDF (HAPF) membrane was developed for NPs removal. The optimized HAPF membrane was prepared via a one-step method with 800 mg/L HAP at pH 7.3 for 8 hours. It achieved a water flux of 4376.44 LMH, 3.4 times higher than that of the pristine PVDF membrane, while maintaining a polystyrene (PS) NPs rejection above 99.5 %. The HAPF membrane maintained 95 % of its pure water flux when treating wastewater with only PS NPs, but exhibited severe flux decline under varying conditions, such as surface-functionalized PS NPs, pH changes, or coexisting contaminants. Among these, the presence of MgSO alongside PS NPs caused the most severe water flux reduction, with the HAPF membrane undergoing complete blocking, followed by the formation of a cake layer. XDLVO results revealed that there is an attractive interaction between the HAPF membrane and PS NPs, primarily driven by acid-base interaction. The HAPF membrane exhibited significantly lower R and R values than the PVDF membrane and achieved a flux recovery rate of 92.94 % over multiple fouling-cleaning cycles. Its water flux was 18.9 times that of the PVDF membrane during long-term filtration. The developed HAPF membrane holds significant potential for advanced water treatment and fouling resistance .

MRI images contain a lot of subtle information related to various lesions which are difficult to be picked up by radiologists. computer aided diagnosis CAD is a valuable tool to improve the ability of an average radiologist to diagnose the subtle lesions. This study uses the isolated foreground pixels in MRI images as a feature able to discern a stroke patient by a healthy one. Brain MRI image was divided into eight equal sectors. The isolated foreground pixels (i.e. pixels satisfying a neighborhood configuration that corresponds to an isolated foreground pixel) were extracted using hit-or-miss and skeleton transformations. We have tested the proposed algorithms using two cerebral image datasets (healthy and acute stroke patients). The mean SD values of isolated foreground pixels for stroke patients systematically exceed the corresponding values for healthy patients. The higher numbers of isolated foreground pixel determined using hit-or-miss transform indicate this method as a promising approach for a simple and quick evaluation of stroke. © SGEM 2019.

Tremor is a rhythmic, alternating swing motion caused by involuntary repetition of muscle contraction and relaxation. Although it does not endanger life, it will make the work and daily life of patients difficult. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been shown as a promising technique for tremor suppression. Wrist motion is produced by a group of muscles in a collective and coordinate way. However, existing FES-based design methods mostly aim at one pair of muscles associated with the wrist motion, thus limiting the performance of tremor suppression. Furthermore, the possible high level of stimulation required for a single muscle pair can also accelerate muscle fatigue of the patients. To address these problems, this paper uses multiple muscles FES to suppress tremor by fully considering the properties of wrist motion. This paper develops a wrist musculoskeletal model with Hammerstein structure, identifies its parameters, and proposes repetitive controllers based on frequency modified inverse algorithm to suppress tremor. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate its advantages over single muscle stimulation based tremor suppression.

Installing smart meters to publish real-time electricity rates has been controversial while it might lead to privacy concerns. Dispatched rates include fine-grained data on aggregate electricity consumption in a zone and could potentially be used to infer a household's pattern of energy use or its occupancy. In this paper, we propose Blowfish privacy to protect the occupancy state of the houses connected to a smart grid. First, we introduce a Markov model of the relationship between electricity rate and electricity consumption. Next, we develop an algorithm that perturbs electricity rates before publishing them to ensure users' privacy. Last, the proposed algorithm is tested on data inspired by household occupancy models and its performance is compared to an alternative solution.

Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is essential for stroke diagnosis, treatment decisions, and prognosis. However, image and disease variability hinder the development of generalizable AI algorithms with clinical value. We address this gap by presenting a novel ensemble algorithm derived from the 2022 Ischemic Stroke Lesion Segmentation (ISLES) challenge. ISLES’22 provided 400 patient scans with ischemic stroke from various medical centers, facilitating the development of a wide range of cutting-edge segmentation algorithms by the research community. By assessing them against a hidden test set, we identified strengths, weaknesses, and potential biases. Through collaboration with leading teams, we combined top-performing algorithms into an ensemble model that overcomes the limitations of individual solutions. Our ensemble model combines the individual algorithms’ strengths and achieved superior ischemic lesion detection and segmentation accuracy (median Dice score: 0.82, median lesion-wise F1 score: 0.86) on our internal test set compared to individual algorithms. This accuracy generalized well across diverse image and disease variables. Furthermore, the model excelled in extracting clinical biomarkers like lesion types and affected vascular territories. Notably, in a Turing-like test, neuroradiologists consistently preferred the algorithm’s segmentations over manual expert efforts, highlighting increased comprehensiveness and precision. Validation using a real-world external dataset (N=1686) confirmed the model’s generalizability (median Dice score: 0.82, median lesion-wise F1 score: 0.86). The algorithm’s outputs also demonstrated strong correlations with clinical scores (admission NIHSS and 90-day mRS) on par with or exceeding expert-derived results, underlining its clinical relevance. This paper addresses forward motion control for trajectory tracking and mobile formation coordination for a group of non-holonomic vehicles on SE(2). Firstly, by constructing an intermediate attitude variable which involves vehicles position information and desired attitude, the translational and rotational control inputs are designed in two stages to solve the trajectory tracking problem. Secondly, the coordination relationships of relative positions and headings are explored thoroughly for a group of non-holonomic vehicles to maintain a mobile formation with rigid body motion constraints. We prove that, except for the cases of parallel formation and translational straight line formation, a mobile formation with strict rigid-body motion can be achieved if and only if the ratios of linear speed to angular speed for each individual vehicle are constants. Motion properties for mobile formation with weak rigid-body motion are also demonstrated. Thereafter, based on the proposed trajectory tracking approach, a distributed mobile formation control law is designed under a directed tree graph. In this paper we propose a pipeline for brain mapping using a decentralized database with a blockchain architecture. We use a two-layer model for a distributed imaging data ledger capable of version control and authoring augmented data. Our platform is capable of direct volume rendering inside a browser window using WebGL. The data visualization pipeline allows for real-time multi-intensity transfer functions and global opacity of a given imaging recording. The platform is intended as a collaboration tool for multiple imaging laboratories and institutes and aims to help in organizing augmented data and multiple level-of-detail recordings used on a wide array of devices. We believe our platform will aid in brain mapping efforts for classification, measurement and visualization of cortical structures trough the aid of virtual reality and a scalable backend based on a standard blockchain technology.

In the envisioned smart grid, high penetration of uncertain renewables, unpredictable participation of (industrial) customers, and purposeful manipulation of smart meter readings, all highlight the need for accurate, fast, and robust power system state estimation (PSSE). Nonetheless, most real-time data available in the current and upcoming transmission/distribution systems are nonlinear in power system states (i.e., nodal voltage phasors). Scalable approaches to dealing with PSSE tasks undergo a paradigm shift toward addressing the unique modeling and computational challenges associated with those nonlinear measurements. In this study, we provide a contemporary overview of PSSE and describe the current state of the art in the nonlinear weighted least-squares and least-absolutevalue PSSE. To benchmark the performance of unbiased estimators, the Cramer-Rao lower bound is developed. Accounting for cyber attacks, new corruption models are introduced, and robust PSSE approaches are outlined as well. Finally, distribution system state estimation is discussed along with its current challenges. Simulation tests corroborate the effectiveness of the developed algorithms as well as the practical merits of the theory.
