Intelligent decision-making (IDM) is a cornerstone of artificial intelligence (AI) designed to automate or augment decision processes. Modern IDM paradigms integrate advanced frameworks to enable intelligent agents to make effective and adaptive choices and decompose complex tasks into manageable steps, such as AI agents and high-level reinforcement learning. Recent advances in multimodal foundation-based approaches unify diverse input modalities—such as vision, language, and sensory data—into a cohesive decision-making process. Foundation models (FMs) have become pivotal in science and industry, transforming decision-making and research capabilities. Their large-scale, multimodal data-processing abilities foster adaptability and interdisciplinary breakthroughs across fields such as healthcare, life sciences, and education. This survey examines IDM's evolution, advanced paradigms with FMs and their transformative impact on decision-making across diverse scientific and industrial domains, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in building efficient, adaptive, and ethical decision systems. © 2025 The Authors

A Novel Forwarding Method for Full-Duplex Two-Way Relay Networks

An estimate-and-forward(EF) scheme for single-input single-output(SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) full-duplex two-way relay networks is proposed and analyzed. The relay estimates the received signal from two terminal nodes by a minimum mean squared error(MMSE) estimation and forwards a scaled version of the MMSE estimate to the destination. The proposed EF outperforms conventional amplify-and-forward(AF) and decode-and-forward(DF) across all signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) region. Because its computational complexity is high for relays with a large number of antennas(large MIMO) and/or high order constellations, an approximate EF scheme, called list EF, are thus proposed to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed list EF computes a candidate list for the MMSE estimate by using a sphere decoder, and it approaches the performance of the exact EF relay at a negligible performance loss. The proposed forwarding approach also could be used to other relay networks, such as half-duplex, one-way or massive MIMO relay networks.

The affine formation maneuver control problem of a leader-follower type multi-agent systems with the directed interaction graphs is studied in this paper. This paper firstly gives and proves a sufficient and necessary condition of achieving the affine localizability. Then, under the (d + 1)-reachable condition of the given d-dimensional nominal formation with d + 1 leaders, a formation of agents can be reshaped in arbitrary dimension by only controlling these leaders. In the sequel, a novel distributed control method for the followers with single-integrator dynamics is proposed to achieve the desired time-varying maneuvers, and the global stability is also proved. Corresponding simulations are carried out to verify the theoretical results, which show that these followers are tracking the time-varying references accurately and continuously.

Currently, variable gain PI (VGPI) controllers are used in several applications. Its structure is built around PI controller tuning and usually an entire number is chosen for the order or degree. This paper deals with a study of a VGPI with fractional order (VGPIFO). For the PI controller tuning, a method called general method (MG) is adopted. Then, the VGPI one is established. The proposed controller is applied on a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) inserted in a chain of wind power conversion. Simulation results show that this new controller leads to good performances as test tracking, disturbance rejection and robustness with respect to system operation variation and parameters variation. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper the regulation problem for continuous-time stochastic systems by linear state-feedback under state and/or control constraints is investigated. Nonlinear dynamical systems affected by stochastic disturbances modelled as q-dimensional Wiener processes with independent components are considered. Linear inequalities on the mean values of the state and the control are considered as control constraints. The analysis is based on the use of monotone comparison systems for Ito type stochastic differential equations and the positive invariance of polyhedral sets. This enables one to derive stability properties in terms of the convergence of the state vector mean values, thus avoiding complicated computations faced when stability properties are obtained by studying the behavior of higher order moments. For the class of linear systems a design approach based on linear programming is proposed. © 2017

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Sensitivity analysis of data-driven building energy demand forecasts

Data-driven models of buildings could potentially reduce implementation barriers for demand forecasting and predictive control in the built environment. However, such models appear to be sensitive to the quality of the available input data. Here, we investigate the influence of sampling time, noise level and amount of available measurement data as well as the quality of the weather forecast on a heating demand forecast with online corrected Artificial Neural Networks. Based on a case study, we demonstrate that sampling time has a stronger influence on the prediction performance than noise level and the amount of available data. Furthermore, we show that using measured ambient temperatures for training appears to provide no benefit compared to using weather forecasts.

Chimera states in spatiotemporal dynamical systems have been investigated in physical, chemical, and biological systems, and have been shown to be robust against random perturbations. How do chimera states achieve their robustness? We uncover a self-adaptation behavior by which, upon a spatially localized perturbation, the coherent component of the chimera state spontaneously drifts to an optimal location as far away from the perturbation as possible, exposing only its incoherent component to the perturbation to minimize the disturbance. A systematic numerical analysis of the evolution of the spatiotemporal pattern of the chimera state towards the optimal stable state reveals an exponential relaxation process independent of the spatial location of the perturbation, implying that its effects can be modeled as restoring and damping forces in a mechanical system and enabling the articulation of a phenomenological model. Not only is the model able to reproduce the numerical results, it can also predict the trajectory of drifting. Our finding is striking as it reveals that, inherently, chimera states possess a kind of “intelligence” in achieving robustness through self-adaptation. The behavior can be exploited for the controlled generation of chimera states with their coherent component placed in any desired spatial region of the system.

In this paper we study rendezvous control of multiple mobile *** propose a control law that merely requires each robot to measure the relative bearings of their neighbors in their local coordinate *** measurement or relative position estimation is not *** theory,the proposed control law verifies that distance information is redundant in rendezvous control tasks though the objective of rendezvous is to decrease the inter-robot *** practice,the control law provides a simple solution to vision-based rendezvous tasks where bearings can be measured by visual ***,we generalize the proposed control law by introducing an additional heading vector into the control *** heading vector may preserve the system convergence and,in the meantime,provides great flexibility to adapt the control law for nonholonomic robot models or obstacle avoidance.
