Recently distributed integral controllers relying on averaging and communication have been proposed as effective means for optimal frequency regulation in power systems, load balancing of network flows, and as natural extensions to static consensus controllers. Typically, only the questions of stability, disturbance rejection, and steady-state resource allocation are addressed in the literature, and the problems of transient performance and optimal communication network design remain open. In this paper we consider the optimal frequency regulation problem and propose a principled heuristic to identify the topology and gains of the distributed integral control layer. We employ an l1-regularized H2-optimal control framework as a means for striking a balance between network performance and communication requirements. The resulting optimal control problem is solved using the alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm. For the IEEE 39 New England benchmark problem, we demonstrate that the identified sparse and distributed integral controller can achieve reasonable performance relative to the optimal centralized controller. Interestingly, the identified control architecture is directed and correlates with the generator rotational inertia and cost coefficients.

In this paper, we propose novel relay selection policies that aim at reducing the average delay by incorporating the buffer size of the relay nodes into the relay selection process. More specifically, we propose two delay-aware protocols that are based on the max - link relay selection protocol. First, a delay-aware only approach while it reduces the delays considerably it starves the buffers and increases the outage probability of the system. Towards this end, we propose a delay- and diversity-aware buffer-aided relay selection policy that aims at reducing the average delay considerably and at the same time maintaining good diversity. The protocols are analyzed by means of Markov Chains and expressions for the outage, throughput and delay are derived. The performance and use of our proposed algorithms is demonstrated via extensive simulations and comparisons.

The origin of artificial intelligence is investigated, based on which the concepts of hybrid intelligence and parallel intelligence are presented. The paradigm shift in Intelligence indicates the ''new normal'' of cyber-social-physical systems (CPSS), in which the system behaviors are guided by Merton's Laws. The characterization of the closed-loop delays in a wide-area control system (WACS) is an important foundation for further research. The method to estimate and measure the closed-loop delay in actual WACSs were proposed in this paper. Then, the closed-loop delays in the actual WACS in Guizhou Power Grid in China were measured and analyzed. Also, the measured delays were used to verify the normal distribution estimation model proposed in previous research. The results indicate that the closed-loop delay in the WACS followed a normal distribution.

Tang and Koetter proposed generalized integrated interleaved Reed-Solomon codes in which each code of the second layer belongs to different subcode of the first layer code. However, the original scheme is inapplicable to binary BCH codes since its integrating coefficients are general finite field elements. In this work we propose a novel generalized integrated interleaving scheme over binary BCH codes, derive a lower bound on the minimum distance, and further present an algebraic encoding and decoding algorithm.

This paper presents a condition for global asymptotic synchronization of Lienard-type nonlinear oscillators in uniform LTI electrical networks with series R-L circuits modeling interconnections. By uniform electrical networks, we mean that the per-unit-length impedances are identical for the interconnecting lines. We derive conditions for global asymptotic synchronization for a particular feedback architecture where the derivative of the oscillator output current supplements the innate current feedback induced by simply interconnecting the oscillator to the network. Our proof leverages a coordinate transformation to a set of differential coordinates that emphasizes signal differences and the particular form of feedback permits the formulation of a quadratic Lyapunov function for this class of networks. This approach is particularly interesting since synchronization conditions are difficult to obtain by means of quadratic Lyapunov functions when only current feedback is used and for networks composed of series R-L circuits. Our synchronization condition depends on the algebraic connectivity of the underlying network, and reiterates the conventional wisdom from Lyapunov- and passivity-based arguments that strong coupling is required to ensure synchronization.

A current-limiting controller with nonlinear dynamics is proposed in this paper for single-phase grid-tied inverters. The inverter is connected to the grid through an LCL filter and it is proven that the proposed controller can achieve accurate real and reactive power regulation. By suitably selecting the controller parameters, it is shown by using the nonlinear input-to-state stability theory that the inverter current remains below a given value at all times. This is achieved without external limiters, additional switches or monitoring devices and the controller remains a continuous-time system guaranteeing the boundedness of the system states. Guidelines for selecting the controller parameters are also given to provide a complete controller design procedure. Simulation results of a single-phase grid-tied inverter are presented to verify the desired power regulation of the proposed controller and its current-limiting capability.

We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and ℋ 2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications.

Centrality is widely recognized as one of the most critical measures to provide insight in the structure and function of complex networks. While various centrality measures have been proposed for single-layer networks, a general framework for studying centrality in multilayer networks (i.e., multicentrality) is still lacking. In this study, a tensor-based framework is introduced to study eigenvector multicentrality, which enables the quantification of the impact of interlayer influence on multicentrality, providing a systematic way to describe how multicentrality propagates across different layers. This framework can leverage prior knowledge about the interplay among layers to better characterize multicentrality for varying scenarios. Two interesting cases are presented to illustrate how to model multilayer influence by choosing appropriate functions of interlayer influence and design algorithms to calculate eigenvector multicentrality. This framework is applied to analyze several empirical multilayer networks, and the results corroborate that it can quantify the influence among layers and multicentrality of nodes effectively.
