We propose and test on real data a two-tier estimation strategy for inferring occupancy levels from measurements of CO_2 concentration and temperature levels. The first tier is a blind identification step, based either on a frequentist Maximum Likelihood method, implemented using non-linear optimization, or on a Bayesian marginal likelihood method, implemented using a dedicated Expectation-Maximization algorithm. The second tier resolves the ambiguity of the unknown multiplicative factor, and returns the final estimate of the occupancy levels. The overall procedure addresses some practical issues of existing occupancy estimation strategies. More specifically, first it does not require the installation of special hardware, since it uses measurements that are typically available in many buildings. Second, it does not require apriori knowledge on the physical parameters of the building, since it performs system identification steps. Third, it does not require pilot data containing measured real occupancy patterns (i.e., physically counting people for some periods, a typically expensive and time consuming step), since the identification steps are blind.

In this paper we examine the amplitude and phase dynamics of power-electronic inverters in islanded microgrids that are controlled to emulate the dynamics of a class of weakly nonlinear Lienard-type oscillators. The general strategy of controlling inverters to emulate the behavior of Lienard-type oscillators is termed Virtual Oscillator control (VOC), and it presents a compelling time-domain alternative to ubiquitous droop control methods which linearly trade off voltage frequencies and magnitudes with active and reactive power injections. In comparison to droop control, which assumes a priori that the network operates in a quasi-stationary sinusoidal steady state, VOC is a time-domain control strategy that globally stabilizes a desired sinusoidal steady state. The main, and somewhat surprising, result of this paper is that--when reduced to the sinusoidal steady state--the VOC dynamics correspond to those of droop control. Hence, VOC is a globally stabilizing control strategy that can deal with higher-order harmonics and includes droop control in the harmonic steady state. The results are intriguing, in that they suggest that droop control laws can be recovered from averaging the complex dynamics of a class of weakly nonlinear limit-cycle oscillators.

This paper presents a novel point-cloud descriptor for robust and real-time tracking of multiple objects without any object knowledge. Following with the framework of incremental model-free multiple object tracking from our previous work [5][7][6], 6 DoF pose of each object is firstly estimated with input point-cloud data which is then segmented according to the estimated objects, and incremental model of each object is updated from the segmented point-clouds. Here, we propose Joint Color-Spatial Descriptor (JCSD) to enhance the robustness of the pose hypothesis evaluation to the point-cloud scene in the particle filtering framework. The method outperforms widely used point-to-point comparison methods, especially in the partially occluded scene, which is frequently happened in the dynamic object manipulation cases. By means of the robust descriptor, we achieved unsupervised multiple object segmentation accuracy higher than 99%. The model-free multiple object tracking was implemented by using a particle filtering with JCSD as a likelihood function. The robust likelihood function is implemented with GPU, thus facilitating real-time tracking of multiple objects.

We consider the problem of estimating the occupancy level in buildings using indirect information such as CO_2 concentrations and ventilation levels. We assume that one of the rooms is temporarily equipped with a device measuring the occupancy. Using the collected data, we identify a gray-box model whose parameters carry information about the structural characteristics of the room. Exploiting the knowledge of the same type of structural characteristics of the other rooms in the building, we adjust the gray-box model to capture the CO_2 dynamics of the other rooms. Then the occupancy estimators are designed using a regularized deconvolution approach which aims at estimating the occupancy pattern that best explains the observed CO_2 dynamics. We evaluate the proposed scheme through extensive simulation using a commercial software tool, IDA-ICE, for dynamic building simulation.

This paper considers the problem of characterizing the sets of consistent and inconsistent parameters for given constraints for linear fractional models. Based on previous results on the single box volume maximization problem using structured singular value, algorithms that express the (in)consistent parameter set as a union of multiple boxes are developed. Since no relaxation is involved in the proposed algorithms, the obtained sets are guaranteed to be (in)consistent with the given constraints even when the real set of (in)consistent parameters is nonconvex. A numerical example is included to illustrate the difference of the sets obtained by the proposed algorithms.

In this work,a finite-horizon optimal control problem for first-order plus time delay(FOPTD) processes is *** show that if the control horizon is greater than three and the prediction horizon is great than the control horizon plus the time delay in discrete time,the optimal controller is not affected by either of the two ***,under these conditions,the controller parameters are explicitly calculated,the closed-loop system is shown to be stable,and the controller is *** problem considered is related to the results on linear quadratic regulation of linear systems with time delays;however,the detailed parameterization of the state-space model introduced by the FOPTD process provides an additional opportunity to investigate the exact controller structure and properties(e.g.,the locations of the closed-loop poles),which are also the major difficulties encountered and overcome in this *** problem is motivated from phenomena experienced in designing industrial model predictive control(MPC) tuning algorithms,and extensive numerical examples indicate that the proposed results speed up the MPC autotuning algorithms by 70%.

In this work, a non-linear controller with an inherent current-limiting property is proposed to achieve dc output voltage regulation and unity power factor operation for single-phase ac/dc converters. The proposed current-limiting non-linear controller (CLNC) acts independently from the system parameters and is proven to guarantee closed-loop system stability using non-linear control theory. Without requiring the instantaneous measurement of the grid voltage, a PLL or external limiters, the CLNC additionally guarantees that the input current will always remain below a given maximum value, even during transients. This represents a significant superiority with respect to the existing techniques, since a given limit for the input current is achieved without changing the controller dynamics or using external protection circuits. Extended simulation results using both Matlab/Simulink and a real-time digital simulator are presented to verify the proposed controller performance under several changes of the reference voltage.

In this paper, we provide a compositional framework for the construction of infinite approximations of interconnected stochastic control systems. Our approach is based on a notion of so-called stochastic simulation functions that are associated with interfaces. The stochastic simulation functions are used to quantify the approximation error while the interfaces are used to lift the controllers synthesized for the approximation to the controllers for the original stochastic system. In the first part of the paper, we analyze interconnected stochastic control systems which consist of several stochastic control subsystems. We derive sufficient conditions that facilitate the compositional construction of stochastic simulation functions together with the associated interfaces. Specifically, we show how to construct a stochastic simulation function with the corresponding interface for the interconnected stochastic control system from the simulation functions and interfaces of the individual stochastic control subsystems. In the second part of the paper, we focus on linear stochastic control systems. We extend a methodology, which is known for the non-probabilistic case, to construct infinite approximations of linear stochastic control systems together with their stochastic simulation functions and the corresponding interfaces. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results on the interconnection of four linear stochastic control subsystems.

Power factor correction converters are used in many applications as AC-DC power supplies aiming at maintaining a near unity power factor. systems of this type are known to exhibit nonlinear phenomena such as sub-harmonic oscillations and chaotic regimes that cannot be described by traditional averaged models. In this paper, we derive a time varying discretetime map modeling the behavior of a power factor correction AC-DC boost converter. This map is derived in closed-form and is able to faithfully reproduce the system behavior under realistic conditions. In the chaotic regime the map exhibits a sequence of bifurcation similar to a bandcount doubling cascade on the low frequency. However, the observed scenario appears in some sense incomplete, with some gaps in the bifurcation diagram, whose appearance to our knowledge has never been reported before. We show that these gaps are caused by high frequency oscillations.
